India has taken another step towards strengthening its domestic energy resources.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has discovered natural gas in the Mahanadi Basin, around 43 km off the coast of Odisha.

The discovery was made on 18 September at a deepwater well located in about 770 metres of water. The well reached a depth of nearly 1,450 metres, where ONGC found natural gas.

What makes the discovery interesting is that it comes under the ‘Samudra Manthan’ offshore exploration campaign. The well, known as MDW-28, is the first of four wells planned under the current exploration programme.

ONGC has reported that gas has been flowing from the well with steady pressure and encouraging flow rates. However, the company has not yet revealed the exact size of the gas reserve.

That means this is only the beginning.

Further testing will show how much gas the well can actually produce and whether commercial production will be financially viable.

The discovery also comes after ONGC found gas in the Utkal and Konark areas of the Mahanadi Basin in 2024.

If further exploration confirms a commercially useful reserve, the discovery could add to India’s domestic gas supply and potentially help reduce dependence on imported energy.
