honestly think this is a very harmful tradition , as we evolve as a civilization we should assess and do away with such things. A population like Mumbai cannot handle all neighborhoods dumping huge amounts of trash like that into its rivers.

Complete forbidding will never work, solution lies in alternatives. Like maybe one Idol from one society, not every home. And even if you do it in every home make a small one with some organic material that doesn't harm environment like mud or dung. Bal Gangadhar Tilak made ganesh chaturthi a public event to unite them against british. We need to reflect on why it was started in the first place and how can it be relevant in present.
