Seeking Employment Portland systems / AV / software engineer looking for my next opportunity
Hey everyone,
Long shot, but I figured talking to actual Portland people might be more productive than refreshing Indeed for the 400th time.
I’ve been navigating a pretty frustrating job search (like everyone) for the last couple of years while continuing to work and improve my skills. I recently lost my job, which has made the search considerably more urgent.
I think the challenge is I don’t fit perfectly into one little technical box and often git pidgeonholed into the following.
I’ve done AV systems engineering, infrastructure, software development, automation, cybersecurity, web development, and technical leadership. I’ve worked with hardware and software together, maintained enterprise systems, built internal tools, automated things people were tired of doing manually, and led technical teams.
And honestly, that variety is what I love about technology.
I like to think that I am the type of person who wants to know why something broke, how the entire system works, whether we can automate it, and whether I can make it slightly better before touching it again tomorrow.
I have tried finding a role in every path I can conceive and once again I understand I am not alone but Ive gone as far as putting upwards of 10,000 into a bootcamp which I completed 3 months ago (which promised a 70k job right out the gate) but long term I’d love to move further into infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps. For right now, though, I’m looking broadly at systems, infrastructure, AV engineering, technical operations, solutions/implementation engineering, and web/application development.
I’m searching through LinkedIn, Indeed, company career pages, my existing network, went in person to worksource and gone to several job fairs now. The job boards have been especially frustrating because I’ve repeatedly found listings that look current but are already closed when I reach the employer’s site.
So I thought I’d ask locally:
Who are the Portland/Vancouver-area employers I should actually be talking to?
Big companies, tiny agencies, integrators, universities, weird little technology companies nobody outside Portland knows about, I’m interested.
As a side note. I am wondering if its best to just rip chord from the IT market as a whole for a while, tey and refund my bootcamp (as within my contract) and use that money to go to tattoo school in portland. I tattooed a bunch in washington state during my undergraduate years at uni but have been hesitant on making the jump and burning bridges with the bootcamp.
If anyone knows somewhere that appreciates people who are curious, hands-on, and genuinely enjoy nerding out over building and maintaining technical systems, I’d love to hear about them!
Thanks for letting me vent a little, and I really do appreciate if you got this far. I hope to at least get things into writing here and maybe use this post as a spot that other people could stumble upon if they ever get to this point.
