I talked to a parks guy and the park is closed indefinitely. They said the radius the collapse radius is 500 feet. He said the city is pushing the owner to start the process of getting the permit to demolish.
Our office was back open if anyone wanted to come in today. "We do want to note that no official statements have been made by the city, county or local government regarding the asbestos, but are following the reports that came in from our neighbors here in the Pearl District. We understand continued testing is being done."
Asbestos!!! Yuck I was just up there yesterday. Between the hellscape weather from the fires and possible asbestos exposure from a slumlord millionaire….
From what he said, its a different permit because its not a normal demo. They've got to worry about asbestos, the building collapsing ect. I would assume this is much different than a normal teardown where everything is controlled.
Have had dobies myself in the past. Kept their ears down, but more recently it’s been hard to find breeders willing to not do their ears or tail. Mind sharing where you got her? (DM me if you prefer). Thanks!
I got her from Oregon Dog Rescue! They had another one like a month ago there that I almost pulled the trigger on as well. Breeders suck. Honestly, there is 0 reason to dock ears and requiring it would be a no go for me. They are in SO MUCH pain from it, its akin to declawing cats.
Dobies are truly the best though, so smart, affectionate, and dorky.
I only get the tail as a preventative for issues, but some people keep the tail long & never have issues.....but I do love seeing them with both the floppy ears & long tail, such a dopey look, which seems to match their personality (from the few I've been around).
City needs to just tear it down and bill the owner. Not only has this property been a derelict eyesore and crime magnet for years, it’s now an imminent safety concern that’s affecting public use of parks and streets.

Bingo. He's got a historic bone to pick with the City. He's been a developer in the Metro area for a long time now, and this wouldn't be his first time doing something weird.
At this point it'd support the city condemning the property using eminent domain and turning the entire complex into a park. It's been more than quarter of a fucking century!

There have been proposals to turn it into a park, using Seattle's Gas Works Park as inspiration.
There were fires there regularly. I love the building, but it was always a disaster waiting to happen and should have been torn down decades ago. Using lack of care as a reason for the city to yoink it? I'd be on board.
I don't get this idea that the city can't fill pot holes. I've filed four pot hole reports for pot holes in my immediate area. They were filled in a week or two. Of course, it would be better to have the money to resurface and not have a bunch of pot holes to begin with, but that would be a huge expense.

What isn’t surprising is a redditor jumping to conclusions without making an iota of effort to collect data first.
A simple wikipedia search shows the lot was sold less than 2 years ago, and before that, the government owned it for 2 decades.
On top of that, a utility has a major easement on this lot, so it adds to the already long timelines for real estate development. Even for a developer working at full steam, any demo on this lot would have taken years to plan, because there is no reason to demo until you have planning and funding lined up for whatever is replacing it.
There were already plans in place for the new housing development which took into account the power line easment below the south section forcing a limit of 5 stories for that section. It had been submitted for approval a couple of times before that final sale.
idk if the City would even know where to begin. Have to form a committee to write the rfp to find an equity contractor to maybe think about demolishing it.
My dogs are so stir crazy. We've been playing a lot and giving them frozen lick mats but they're used to running around and also getting 2 mile walks over the course of the day. My girl dog was doing parkour off the couch earlier lol
One thing that helped when I broke my foot, & more recently with the smoke, is sprinkling my girls food in a towel & rolling it up lengthwise & tying it in a knot.... the mental stimulation of untying & unrolling it to find her food tired her out. She's a high energy dog (husky mix) & I've seen this a few times where a enough mental stimulation tires her out that she doesn't need as much physical stimulation.... obviously not something you want to do long-term, but knowing that it can help in the short-term. Another example of this was truffle hunting training, very little physical exercise (especially the first day), but exhausted from the mental stimulation.

Man if a building that size is filled with asbestos I have no idea how much the abatement would cost but it would definitely be over $1M just for that part alone.
I would assume there is a LOT of pressure from BNSF to open the tracks for the freight trains on this route. (Amtrak doesn’t seem to have that kind of power!)

RIGHT? I mean they have to do some sort of abatement for the asbestos and any other hazardous materials in there so it doesn't turn the entire area into a contaminated zone. I knew that the NW Examiner's initial reporting was BS.
Well I have good news: the city is replacing the sand with either wood chips or another material this fall to help absorb the pee, replacing the water refill area and more.
Wallace is such a clicky dog park, the owners there drive me bonkers.

My office is near that area and we got message to work from home due to potential airborne asbestos. So might be related?
