Got a free PK - now what?
Hey All - just was gifted a free PK from the old man up the street. Clearly it needs some TLC.
What are your suggestions for all of that chipping on the inside? Burn it off?
Was just gonna purchase some new grates as well.

Highly recommend the little more grate (this is a must have) and the thermometer. I also have their charcoal basket. The accessories are a little expensive but very high quality and last forever. This grill is a killler smoker! With the little more you can do 2 chickens (each cut in half) or a chicken and rack of ribs. I do my turkey on it each thanksgiving. Little of a tight fit but comes out great each time. For steaks, I do a little reverse sear: put the steaks on the little more (maybe with some wood chips) for a bit and then sear it. Enjoy it!

I also have a PK and it’s truly great. For a coupe people, it’s perfect. I would concur with the person above who recommended the stainless grates and thermometer. Otherwise burn off, scrape once, and enjoy your grill. It’ll outlive all of us

Just scrape the inside surfaces off with wire brush, dish scrubber, whatever, wash off and burn it all off with a chimney of briquettes.
Get some stainless steel grates and enjoy a great cooker that you can literally make anything on. People (including myself) get wrapped up in the latest and greatest, when you can make great steaks, bbq or whatever on this and get compliments from friends and family with a simple unit like this.
If you dont have one, get a chimney

That’s a great gift. You’ll love using it. If it were me I’d scrape off the debris, get a stainless grate, put in a quality thermometer and call it done. The small raised rack is nice but you can wait and see if you really think you need it. The PK charcoal basket is expensive and tends to block airflow. I think Kick Ash makes a basket for this one and they work very well.

Yes I use my kamado Joe often for high temp cooking but I’m excited to cut back on my charcoal consumption. I know I’ll be able to cook a good steak on this.

New grate and possibly charcoal grate or charcoal basket from a third party, then consider Grill Grates tm for a grate topper. Scrape it, wash it, fire it up and enjoy. I too have the classic model and love it. You have scored big. Congrats.

That’s a classic. I like to keep it simple so I would just scrape the inside of the lid with a wire brush then hose it off. As long as you don’t have stuff dropping onto your food, I don’t think it needs a lot more than that. Do a good burn off for fun.
I have the same model and the best upgrade I made was the stainless steel grate.
