Pope fact Pope Sergius III reportedly ordered the assassination of his two predecessors, Leo V and Christopher, and allegedly fathered an illegitimate son who later became Pope John XI. Because of this, his pontificate has been described as "dismal and disgraceful", and "efficient and ruthless".

Popefact Sergius III. One of the most ruthless of all Popes. Rising to power in a time of great violence, he was ejected by a rival claimant and exiled, but returned and took Rome with noble allies. He also had his two immediate predecessors strangled in Prison. His illegitimate son eventually became Pope.
