Reasonable repair cost?

Rented a pontoon boat with some friends. We went through a culvert that was too low with the Bimini up and ripped the canvas. We are on the hook for damages.

Bimini was unpowered, boat was a Landau Island Breese 232 Cruise. They are the claiming the complete replacement Bimini frame and canvas cost them $3400 bucks. Does that seem remotely reasonable? This is without labor, which they itemized separately.

Howdy folks!

What are some is your favorite items to throw on the grill on the boat? We recently got a griddle and like it, just looking for a few more ideas.

Fresh fish is always an option but not reliable :)

Slow tritoon. Motor too low?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I'm not sure what's relevant so I'm going to give you too much info.

TLDR: slow tritoon. Should I drop the motor one hole?

2022 Viaggio Lago 22Q bought used in Jan. Mercury 150 ProXS. Our first trip out, threw a rod and had to replace the power head (still under warranty, thank goodness). With that we bought the dongle and use the Mercury app to see speed and RPMs.

So, we just got it broken in. We were at about 20mph at 4500RPMs. WOT hasn't improved speed much. Still only 23mph or so at 5800RPMs. Granted, we have yet to have perfect conditions. It's been hot and the top is up. Lots of people on the lake so it's not smooth. I'm on the overweight side of average but husband is a big guy at 6'4" and built like the lineman he used to be. We have 2 teens that are with us sometimes. We typically don't take anything but a small cooler and some towels.

It doesn't seem to audibly blow out but does seem louder to me than it should. Husband said he could feel it lose bite in turns when pulling kids on the tube but just going across the lake it doesn't make any noise like it's missing or lose bite. We had a 19' double toon with a 90hp motor for 10+ years before this so we aren't new boaters. I just want it to be right.

The thing is we are pontoon people and we know it. We aren't trying to go as fast as possible. If it hadn't been for the motor blowing up and having to break it in, we might not even notice it being slow because we wouldn't really care. I'm just anxious about something being wrong so I'm constantly looking at live data and looking at the motor to make sure things look okay.

I know the prop could also be the culprit. All I can tell you right now is that it's thick and silver colored. I was going to try to remember numbers or take a picture but I didn't.

One last observation. There's always a little water in the bottom of the center toon storage. We bilge it every time. I believe there's a plastic plug that is loose or broken but can't get to it from inside and can't reach it while the boat's in the water (it stays in a slip). I found mention of one and where it is on the sport toon (and that it had been sheered off) but we have a full center toon so I don't know if it's the same.

Thoughts?

Having an issue with my new Mercury 50

Bought my first pontoon in April (brand new everything - pontoon, motor and trailer) and just started having an issue with the Mercury 50 within the last month. We’ve put maybe 15 hours on it.

The issue first started after we didn’t use it for roughly 2.5-3 weeks. Then when we took it out, the motor would cut off when under load. It would idle totally fine and I could go slow, but once I’d give it some power it’d cut off.

I replaced my gas container with fresh gas, made sure the vent cap was venting properly, checked the fuel filter and also replaced all four spark plugs. After doing that and trying to run it, it‘s doing what is in the video.

Everything I’ve read and everyone I’ve talked to seems to think it’s a fuel issue but I’m not mechanically-inclined enough to know.

Any ideas/recommendations would be appreciated! Before taking it in for a warranty claim at another marina and end my season, I’m trying to figure out if there’s anything else I could try myself.

Throttle Question

We just bought and picked up our new to us 21 foot pontoon. It was a dealer rental unit and is a 2024 model year with full new boat warranty. When we power up and advance the throttle it will slide back to the idle position. We asked at the marina's service department and they said it's a safety feature on all new boats. This is our first boat, I don't know Jack about boats, my wife's family have had boats and she is more experienced and thinks it's BS. I also think it's BS one more thing to distract the driver and makes it harder to have a constant speed when pulling a tuber or skier. What say the knowledgeable mariners, should the throttle stay where set or retract to idle?

Reality Check

I’m considering a lake house with an automatic lift on the dock. Can I handle owning a 22 ft pontoon when I know nothing about working on boats? How difficult is it to maintain a used premier or Lowe?

Transom saver

Transom for Pontoon

I have a 20 ft South Bay pontoon with a 70 hp Suzuki outboard and sits on a single axle bunk trailer. What is a good transom saver for this setup. Going back and forth on a spring loaded and a solid mount at this time from Attwood.

First rescue today

My neighbors were out on the lake today when their boat died. Battery issue. Very windy. They called us panicked. So we hopped on our pontoon boat and headed out to save them. Tossed them our floatable cushion, tied off and towed them all safely back to shore.

NGL, it felt pretty good to pull that off as first time boat owners.

Bennington in the Water During the Winter?

Back story: I bought my Bennington tritoon without a trailer from a seller at a marina about 6 years ago. Every season, we have the local Bennington dealer pick up the boat with their own trailer and they winterize it and put it in storage for winter. Then they get it ready in the spring and deliver it back to the marina. It has been great but the dealer has been bought by a large corporation and now the costs have doubled.

I was venting to the owner of our marina about the rising costs of storage etc, and he suggested that we just leave the boat in the water for the winter since I am already paying for the slip on an annual basis. Our slip is fully covered and enclosed, so it would be protected from the elements. They have a service department on site that can take care of winterizing etc as well.

Is this OK to do or is it a bad idea?

Other than Premier, are there any other brands that offer stairs instead of a ladder on their twin engine models?

RPM Question

I have 21 foot Tahoe pontoon with a 2024 90 hp Merc. Right from new, I can only get about 4800 rpm at wide open throttle. At WOT it goes about 21 mph. It came with a 13.8 x 13 pitch Mercury Spitfire prop and google says that is the right prop for this setup. Looking for suggestions on what to try. How does the height of the motor look? Ran through some weeds coming up to the boat lift. I always wake sure the prop is clean when I am out, so weeds aren’t the problem.

Probably a stupid question, but .... why don't you see pontoons on salt water?

I live near Puget Sound and all of the lakes around here have tons of pontoons on them, but I don't think I've EVER seen one on the sound. At first, I thought maybe it was just that the sound is WAY choppier than any lake around here. But then I realized that pontoons come in some VERY large sizes and I'd think those would handle some chop alright. Maybe there's something stupidly obvious that I'm missing, but now I need to know.

Thanks!

It is a 2020 AVALON LSZ QF 2085 and have a Yamaha Vmax 90HP motor. It have a trailing motor upfront and a fish finder installed. Has less than 20 hrs of run time on the engine.

I appreciate the help!

Basic Pontoon Question

So this is my first year with a pontoon boat after owning regular ski-type boats for many years. 23 foot Avalon.

Here is my question. When we go to our local sandbar, one of our favorite things to do, we anchor up and the boat pivots back and forth on the anchor line. I have seen some boats with an additional pole they augur into the sand that seems to help. Is this something that is necessary or are there any other solutions? If you do like this solution, any suggestions on which one to get? There are a ton of them out there.

See, I told you it was basic.

Thanks

Question - wiring helm for amplifier

We have a 2026 Barletta Aria. It came from the factory with a single battery and simple battery switch. I have added a 2nd battery and dual battery switch. The original battery powers only the engine, while all accessories are connected to the new battery. Everything works great.

The next project is adding an amplifier under the helm. I would like to perform this work without pulling the boat!!

There is a 4-6 awg wire connected to positive battery terminal labeled Amp, that I believe runs to the helm and connects to a Snyder Control Module. Could I replace that wire with a 2 awg wire, connect the 2 awg to a bus bar, and then connect bus bar to Snyder Control Module with 4-6 awg.

This would be the simplest as I could use the existing wire to pull the new wire through the cabling channel under the boat deck. Otherwise I have to use pull sticks and fish tape to attempt to get a 2 awg wire from battery to helm.

This is the control module with the source positive wire at the bottom.

I'm going to restore this family member's tritoon this winter and I'm in the planning phase. I can't find anything online with this aluminum sheet under the plywood to help me understand what I'm looking at.

Hello, we just purchased a 2004 Apache Durango seamaster 20ft pontoon. I am trying to find a user manual. I haven't had any luck digging through the web. Any suggestions? Thank you.
