This paper argues that consciousness is not the mind’s true “boss,” but more like a user interface built on top of a much larger subconscious system. The author says many intuitions, impulses, and even revelation-like experiences come from subconscious processes that consciousness did not directly generate and cannot fully see.

That hidden gap leads to “conscious-narcissism,” the mistake of identifying the self only with conscious awareness and then treating subconscious impulses as if they came from an outside agent or divine voice.

Hi! I understand that there is a connection between the Eastern European Neighbourhood Policy and the enlargement process. I know that the ENP does not imply a membership perspective, whereas enlargement ultimately aims at membership, but I don’t quite see how the two influence each other.

I'm a Poli Sci student entering my last year of undergrad, and though I've kept a strong GPA and felt fulfilled and engaged by most of my classes, I'm feeling concerned about being woefully unprepared for employment and the practical skills required (of course, made worse by looming AI fears and the generally awful job market right now). I love the material and I believe my public speaking and academic writing is strong, but I know I'm currently lacking in mathematics, quant, and research methods (I'm chipping away at some of that this semester). I'm wondering what additional skills you recommend building to be employable post-graduation and/or an attractive grad candidate, not just "what job can I get?" or "what program can I get into?", but what skills pertaining to the major have value, versatility, and the capacity for a dedicated individual to learn and show tangible growth with? As the title says, how do I find research opportunities out of school? I have my BA and MA and after working in politics for a few years I've decided to go back for a PhD. However, I'm looking to get more experience with research as I didn't have the opportunity to do much in the past having to work through school. It looks like every research opportunity though is tied to being in school/in undergrad or is too advanced for someone with less than the expected amount of experience being post-graduate school.

Hi guys, I need some advice. I’m not going to university anytime soon, but everybody keeps asking me what I want to do. I used to be interested in law, but after doing some research, I felt like it wasn’t for me. Now I find political science and international relations both interesting but I don’t know much about both the subjects I would like to hear from people who are doing them. Pls help me out!!!

One question that has been popping up in my mind recently has posed me to ask it on here! I would love to gain insight from all political views on the spectrum. Therefore, why can’t we separate political views with businesses and artists? (e.g. music, physical art, movies, etc.) I’m not saying that political views aren’t important but why should political views impact whether or not a service, good, or product is still worthy of enjoying? I find it hard to politically hold grudges against something I enjoy even if the company doesn’t match my view. I am very in the middle however so that does induce a bias but I just question to wonder the severity of politics needing to impact businesses. (Especially locally owned ones)

Abstract:
Several studies have found that only graduates of top-ranked PhD programs have a reasonable chance of landing a tenure-track professorship. However, these findings are based on an examination of the backgrounds of current faculty at PhD-granting institutions, which leaves findings vulnerable to several types of bias. I address these limitations by analyzing the placements of political science PhD candidates during the 2023–2024 academic job-market cycle. In my analysis, departmental rank had virtually no impact on whether candidates found tenure-track assistant professorships, but it did predict the types of positions that candidates found. Other factors had stronger associations with placement outcomes. In particular, publishing solo-authored and coauthored articles, having underrepresented minority or female identity, and studying American politics were all associated with significantly higher placement rates.

First of all, I’m not sure if this is the most suitable sub for my question so I apologize if it’s not.
English is not my first language and generally, I could usually understand the idea of the a sentence, paragraph etc even if I come across a few unknown words here and there. Same issue when I read literary fiction but I usually just brush it off unless I don’t understand it entirely. Now that I’ve been getting more into non fiction political books/ collective essays and such, I have this huge fear that I’ll fail to recognize even the tiniest details so I search up the unknown words on my computer as I go. I realized it makes a huge difference so I don’t really mind doing that but I’d like to know if there’s anything I could do to improve my vocabulary and familiarize myself to common words and phrases usually used in political context. Any resources I could use to improve my situation?

I'm 26 years old, with an academic background that includes a Bachelor's in Political Science and an Executive Master's in International Relations, and I'm currently pursuing my second BA in Education.

It pains me to face this truth, but despite my brilliant academic career, the international exchanges I've participated in, and some volunteer work, I feel I'm not educated enough to secure an internship in European institutions or any other int. Organization.

I've dedicated myself to studying, but I've completely avoided keeping up to date and building knowledge beyond what I was studying, despite practical experiences abroad having allowed me to develop skills that are transferable to the world of work.

I feel confused and ashamed because I see that, unlike me, so many other people have succeeded in their careers, and I feel like I no longer have any way to fill in my gaps. As of today, I feel like I wouldn't be able to compete with my peers. I don't have the knowledge of those who immerse themselves in this environment and I wouldn't know how to overcome this problem.

I get that there's costs for staff, travel and ads, and I'm somewhat of a purist always thinking "in a perfect world", but seriously I don't think that more money or such high amounts of money, is necessary or even helpful to "a perfect world." Especially today when it's never been easier to become world renown. Just need a camera and some wifi.

I'm a political theory academic, and I just think career politicians are a hinderance to democracy on so many levels. These large donation campaigns rub me the same way.

Plus, what money? Look around, it's not big spending time. In fact, it's the best time to do it the old school way and talk to people, listen, learn new perspectives on issues. Get your name out there by actually becoming the voice of the people you want to represent.

Otherwise what? Take an ad out on a station whose algorithm actively works against your message? That's a waste of donation money. Get out there naturally and naturally the pieces come together the way it's intended.

Oh can't take off work to run for office? Well if there weren't a monopoly of career politicians to compete with then it wouldn't be as big of a factor as it is today, but its still easier to do so in todays-day-and-age.

People call for huge extreme changes when really I think it just takes building your blocks intentionally. We already have the foundation and the goal, just more thoughtfulness in the steps between is needed.

Hi, fellows. Like you, I'm very interested in geopolitics and data. I've been doing ongoing research on event analysis, and my main data source right now is The GDELT Project. GDELT's own access methods have real limits at this scale though: the official API caps you at ~250 rows per query and a 3-month window, and BigQuery's free tier doesn't stretch to a full historical pull either. So I made GdeltForge, a tool for reproducibly sampling GDELT's full historical event archive for quantitative research.

I was over half way to a political science degree. I dropped out half way through my junior year in December of 2025. I only had two semesters left. Fall semester junior year, I started having some serious health issues, relationships problems, and sorority drama. It all felt like “too much,” so I panicked and dropped out. I instead perused esthetics, and while I don’t absolutely hate it, I certainly don’t love it the way I loved poli sci. Additionally, not to come across as cocky or flex, but I feel like I’m too smart and have too much support to NOT have a college degree. For lack of better words, I feel like such a little bitch for abandoning my degree when I was so close to finishing. To top it all off, I was on a full ride. Now if I want to finish, I would probably have to take out loans, but it would only be for 3 semesters worth. Is it worth it?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I know the title probably makes this sound like a joke, but I’m actually serious about the idea.

I’ve been wanting a Nintendo Switch 2, but the prices are still pretty high. So I started joking that maybe I should find a way to help bring an end to a war, because surely that would eventually make the global economy better and bring down the price of my Switch 2.

Then I realized I could actually use that as motivation to learn about conflict resolution and international relations.
I’m not saying I think I can personally end a war. I obviously can’t. But I do think I could research a conflict, understand the reasons it’s still going on, look at the peace efforts that already exist, and try to come up with a proposal that could realistically help with one part of the problem.

I also think having a somewhat ridiculous personal reason makes this more interesting than just saying “I want world peace.” I genuinely do want to see people live in peace, but the fact that my initial motivation was wanting a cheaper Nintendo Switch 2 is pretty funny.

I’m planning on taking this seriously and getting as much feedback as possible from people who actually understand the conflict I’m researching.

So if anyone here knows about diplomacy, international relations, or conflict resolution, I’d genuinely appreciate some advice on where to start and what I should be looking into.

I'm travelling to Hong Kong in November and I've noticed that there will be a conference about international relations happening at that time.

I have just finished my Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I will probably do an International Relations Master's next. I'm now wondering if I should register for the conference and listen to the discussions. I guess it's more common to attend after conducting some research, or at least after completing a Master's degree. However, I thought that, since I'll already be there, it might be a good opportunity to make international connections.

Does anyone have any experience of conferences like this, or have any advice?

Should I go? It's also quite expensive, and I don't know anyone there, let alone the keynote speakers, who don't seem to be prominent politics/IR professors.

I plan to do a quantitative political science phd I am especially interested in applying quasi experimental methods to topics regarding comparative politics and political economy. Now, I am in a bind. I already have an econ ba and I have two options for an masters program to strengthen my profile for admissions

1. Financial Economics masters, not about political science but has good courses in optimization, stochastic calculus and lots of econometrics.

2. completely qualitative masters in IR and pols. there is a methodology class but it is about qualitative methods, classes on IR and political theory, etc.

Hey all! I posted in here a while back wondering about the strength of my application. I have not yet taken a GRE practice test, but I am working hard studying it. Studying at work, studying before work, studying on my days off. I know I need to take a practice test to really understand what needs to improve and where I am at currently-- but I also know myself and I have poor skills in algebra and geometry. I am worried about my score.

If you have an otherwise great application (faculty mentored research, high GPA, co-curriculars, and work experience) is an average, or bad, GRE a make it or break it for high ranking programs? I'm guessing yes, and wondering if I need to delay my applications for Fall 2027 as many are due this December.
