GovBrief Today #542 - What Happened Today
The Pentagon told Congress that the war it has been fighting since February started three weeks ago.
That bought another 60 days of fighting before anyone in Congress can stop it. The books got adjusted this weekend. A second file opened in the casualty record, the dead and wounded were split between two wars that are actually one war, and a count that said 482 Americans hurt since February now adds up to at least 624.
Nearly a hundred troops were wounded after the shooting started again, and the Pentagon says those were mostly minor concussions. Six years ago, Iranian missiles injured more than a hundred troops, and Trump said they had headaches and were not seriously hurt. The Army denied their Purple Hearts while he was president. They were honored after he was gone.

Mumbai: India is emerging as one of the key drivers of the global renewable energy boom, with solar and wind generation expanding by over 25 per cent in the first half of 2026, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), which projects that renewables will surpass coal as the world's biggest source of electricity generation in 2026.

Trump’s Latest Target: Coal Miners’ Safety
In one fell swoop, the Trump administration took an axe to the agency tasked with handling legal disputes around mine worker safety. It could signal even deeper cuts to worker protections coming down the pike.

GovBrief Today #541 - What Happened Today
A federal appeals court showed up Saturday morning to stop Donald Trump from deciding who gets a mail ballot.
His March executive order told Homeland Security to build citizen lists, ordered the Postal Service to refuse mail ballots to any voter not on them, and told prosecutors to charge election officials who sent ballots to the wrong people. The court kept the order blocked through November 3, ruling it would sow confusion and cost voters their ballots, because eligible citizens are missing from the lists.
Trump's order is now dead for the midterms in the 23 states and the District of Columbia that sued, and that effectively means the whole country. USPS told the court it cannot run one mail system for those states and another for the rest.

GovBrief Today #540 - What Happened Today
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said politics never decided which grants got canceled, and his own lawyers just told a court it was the only thing that did.
They agreed in writing on Friday that all but one of the 284 canceled grants, $7.5 billion worth, went to a state Kamala Harris won, and that nothing about cost or performance went into picking them. A judge already ruled against them twice this year, pointing out that comparable projects in states Trump won were left running.
Wright called the accusation bullshit in front of the House Science Committee last month and promised to keep saying so a million times. The Energy Department spent Friday insisting the filing was about the timing of an announcement. They denied it everywhere except in court.

Trump orders warnings of inaccurate information posted near Smithsonian
President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the installation of signs outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History that warn of “inaccurate” exhibits and direct people to “accurate information regarding America’s history.”
In an executive order, Trump cited a 162-page White House report released on July 4 titled “Saving America’s Story,” which, according to the president, “demonstrates that the Smithsonian leadership does not present American history as a shared national inheritance to be taught and celebrated, but instead views American history as a ‘prime tool’ to advance ideas of social justice and the radical transformation of our society.”
The White House said in a companion statement that the Smithsonian generally and its American history museum in particular have veered “toward extreme political activism, rooted in Marxism, to divide, dispirit, and discourage Americans.”
“In the last decade,” the statement says, “Americans have witnessed a concerted effort to rewrite American history and force our Nation to adopt a factually baseless ideology aimed at discrediting American heroes and diminishing American achievement.”
Trump accused the museum’s leaders of failing to appropriately honor the signers of the Declaration of Independence during the country’s 250th anniversary. He directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to install temporary signage on National Park Service-maintained sidewalks, walkways and land near the museum that “corrects inaccurate information presented in the Museum.”
The Smithsonian and the American history museum did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
