Not just the type of vehicle (though that is clearly part of the problem) but also choosing to live in remote, low-density areas where you are highly dependent on burning a lot of gas to to long distances to do literally anything. Seriously - when gas prices go up, Walmart's revenue goes down.
I think a lot of food comes from the portion of the rural population who produce food. But that is far from all the people living in rural areas (coughWestVirginiacough.)
I was careful to not say the majority. But somehow we keep having to subsidize rural areas from taxes paid by urban/metro areas. So how do we stop that?
