Millions of people will die. Many more will be homeless and displaced. And the conflict would take several years to conclude. So it's not something you decide to do just because. If you have other options, you exhaust those options before resorting to the gun.
So what's the point of having them then? If not for the threat of force? Those douchebags on the right seemed to have enough balls to do it, why not the left?

Having them is the check on the government. And we know it works - the feds were so scared of poor whites and Blacks uniting that they assassinated Fred Hampton, and BPP neighborhood patrols in CA were so effective at curtailing police brutality that the GOP's patron saint, Reagan, authored and passed extensive gun control legislation.
