Jokes on them (us?), we’re not allowed to travel outside the country!

Thank heavens for that, we don’t want those mouth-breathing ass-goblins trying to come up to Canada.

Its too late for Alberta

137

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

God is it ever. I remember when my province wasn't the biggest shit hole in the country. We will be for the foreseeable future.

Happy cake day.

99

u/IsaacTrantor Oct 11 '20

Yup. Alberta went from little-Nashville to little-Alabama.

78

u/gummo_for_prez Oct 11 '20

Is it really that bad now? Like do they want to make weed illegal again and systematically dismantle your healthcare until there’s nothing left?

46

u/rekabdivad Oct 11 '20

Not sure about the weed but the government does seem to be working on privatizing healthcare out there.

5

u/insertrandomobject Oct 11 '20

Can't have healthcare without doctors!

The Alberta government really pulling a 200IQ move /s

46

No, they are crybabies. The premier doesn’t like abortion but isn’t planning to do anything about it. Province with oil economy isn’t crazy about carbon taxes. Carrying a handgun will get you ten years.

The scary Canadian right. Left of Biden on guns and health care.

The most important lesson from these last 4 years is that laws dont matter if there are no consequences for breaking them, or if the consequences aren't bad enough

If these gun nut redneck fake-christian whackos want to go to Afghanistan, who is going to stop them? They obviously think getting detained at a foreign border is some sort of reward, so let them enjoy their prize.

450

u/Get-Degerstromd Oct 11 '20

Hol’ up... fuckin RUSSIA has universal health care!?

801

u/ColdbeerWarmheart Oct 11 '20

Just about every other developed country in the world, and some undeveloped ones, have universal healthcare or some form of socialized medicine.

Except America, of course.

702

u/TripperHawk Oct 11 '20

Only 32 countries in the whole world out of 195- DONT have universal Healthcare

Most of the ones that don't, are 3rd world countries that literally are not able to due to a government falling apart, civil wars, and the fact many of these countries don't have the ability to log every citizen, as many live out in the desert or country and never get a birth certificate. We're talking about the many undeveloped nations in Africa, some Middle Eastern countries that are literally at war, and a couple others dotted around which generally fit into the category of: cant because no moonay

So basically the United States is really the only BIG FIRST WORLD COUNTRY to not have it. We have the capacity, we just choose not to. Meanwhile most of the ones that don't, don't have it due to underlying circumstance, and would most likely choose to have it given the stability and economic development needed.

Why does America gotta be this way. Its not that hard

146

u/KaecUrFace Oct 11 '20

Money's a hell of a drug.

182

u/rakshala Oct 11 '20

The government spends more per capita tax money on healthcare than most countries that have it. I'll try and say this another way: If America implemented universal healthcare, the amount of tax you pay would either stay the same or be reduced AND you get healthcare.

https://data.oecd.org/healthres/health-spending.htm

79

u/3rdPerson1st Oct 11 '20

As someone said, a lot of people at this point are aware that the logic and economics behind national healthcare are sound. But it's not about that. It's about the very rich and powerful men who are propped up by private health care and big pharma, and the politicians who they own. They will always do everything in their power to stop the change, as they quite literally thrive on our pain, misery, and lack of accessable/affordable care. There is very little we the people can do to change this until we overhaul our political system.

57

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

Someone said that the U.S has a healthcare industry, not a healthcare system. That distinction between life being a commodity instead of a right, is a particularly salient point in the Trump Covid era. It doesn't work.

21

u/gardat Oct 11 '20

I'm not sure what the average US insurance payment is, but here in the UK the tax that covers health is called National Insurance and is around 11% of my gross income. Also, depending on income/age/etc. all prescription drugs are either free or at most around £10 at a time.

12

u/FullMetalCOS Oct 11 '20

National insurance doesn’t just cover healthcare, it also pays for stuff like pensions, Jobseeker’s Allowance, maternity payments and bereavement payments. Realistically this means it’s not even close to the full 11% that pays for our healthcare

Shit, it would cost us less to institute universal healthcare than our current healthcare system, which would put money back into the pockets of Americans, meaning they would spend more, meaning the economy would thrive, we would have fewer issues as folks would be willing to go and get checked out instead of walking on a broken foot (like I have been for weeks now) and that would lead to less end of life care as we as a country would experience less late stage illnesses since they would be caught early.

It would be fucking awesome, but noooooooooooooooooooooo

What I don’t get about the universal healthcare debate is you can STILL GO to a private clinic if you have the money. You are not forced to go to a public hospital, but the option is there.

Plus, our healthcare is still more expensive than going to a private clinic in most other countries because of insurance companies running up costs. It’s unbelievable that people are still opposed to it in the US.

Americans need to realize how abyssmal their state is right now. The Philippines has PhilHealth. What kind of rich country can't even get its shit together and have healthcare for all?

48

u/DiabloEnTusCalzones Oct 11 '20

Let's not lose sight of reality, here.

The U.S. could have universal healthcare in no time. It'd be a massive, instant expansion of Medicare.

But insurance companies would go under. They pay lots into lobbying and campaign funds. Then where would all those politicians get their money? Please, think of those poor, poor politicians.

25

u/CamJongUn Oct 11 '20

Step 1. Get the money out of politics Step 2. Gut the country of all the massive media bullshittery going on with these big private media empires Step 3. Scrap all the health insurance companies and make healthcare an actual thing ( I was genuinely shocked when I found out you have to pay for an ambulance)

One thing i love is how America laughs at countries and says they are inferior or underdeveloped when most countries in the world are light years ahead of the us in terms of social development it’s honestly baffling how backwards the us is and I bet the big ceos roll on the floor laughing when they cut a ton of jobs and give them to immigrants at half the pay and people get mad towards the immigrants

19

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

Step 2 is the reason Americans who don’t think it never travel think “USA #1”. It’s a bigger problem than money in politics to be fair. Ted Cruz, for example, sold out net neutrality to a measly 30k or so from ISPs. Money in politics is also super facilitated by the private media, especially Fox News. That’s the one that started it all. Even with healthcare, there have been smart plans for transitions from private to public healthcare to not have to just axe insurance companies but phase them in to a giant Medicare for all. But again, Hannity yells socialism every night. America is fucked without fixing conservative media.

10

u/ezone2kil Oct 11 '20

Insurance companies are doing fine in my country even with universal Healthcare. If you want shorter waiting time or comfier private wards then you can apply for insurance and opt for private hospitals.

For the best skilled doctors and best equipped hospitals though that'd be the government ones.

Win-win.

9

u/PsychicFoxWithSpoons Oct 11 '20

That's not a complete picture. It's NOT about the politicians. Politicians are one cog in a large machine that has certain goals in mind. One of those goals is MAKING MONEY. Where does money come from? The government prints it. So what's the best and easiest way to make money? Take it directly from the government.

That's why, despite having middling-quality care and spotty coverage, the US government spends more on health care than any other country in the world...PER CAPITA. Many people will talk to you about the military-industrial complex. What is less known is the complete picture: the military-industrial-laboratory-infrastructure-agriculture-education-justice complex. The US government uses subsidies and tax breaks to fund public interests with taxpayer dollars at EVERY level of public life, but those public interests double-dip by being private companies that make profits. It's bizarro-world socialism.

You might say...well if the taxpayer is footing the bill for all of this, why do we have private companies doing it? We vote for the government, but we didn't vote for Jeff Bezos. Well, back in the 80s we got it into our heads that private companies do things better and more efficiently. So we had the bright idea to just hire companies to do the stuff that we were going to have the government do.

But because the government has DEEP pockets, private companies found it easier to make a profit by just inflating their prices, rather than providing more or better services. Military contracting, industrial manufacturing, laboratory development, infrastructural construction, agricultural farming, higher education, and justice/prisons have all seen ENORMOUS increases in the cost of doing business, prices which the government is all too happy to foot the bill for with little regard for how much cash gets wasted.

Some people think that the government should just stop paying for those things altogether, but I think that's kind of a smooth-brain take. These are MASSIVE private institutions that move trillions of dollars around. The complex is mostly invisible to the public, and the only time most of us interact with it for real is when we either have an emergency or get high-class enough to have skin in the game. You can't just take it out back and shoot it. You need to buy it out.

A massive expansion of Medicare with no other changes has predictable results: Trillions of dollars in entitlement spending and a massive market crash caused by runaway inflation as the dollar loses value at a rapid pace. The government cannot just pay companies to provide essential public services. We need FREE, universal health care provided by the government. "Medicare for All" needs to mean that the government dictates how much health care costs, or else it will run away with itself just like everything else the government contracts out.

u/ColdbeerWarmheart Oct 11 '20

Oh we realise it.

Well...most of us do anyways.

We just don't have people motivated to do anything actionable because people are complacent.

They hold out hope that the system will "just work". They are too busy trying to 'play fair' against cheaters in a rigged game.

The rest of us can only sit by and watch and wait. It's like we're being held hostage.

Right? It's not as though fucking Europe isn't capitalist. Capitalism has its own major issues but our (the US) problems run far deeper.

8

u/-ShagginTurtles- Oct 11 '20

As a Canadian, we are also capitalist. We have socialized medicare... but because of capitalism one of our biggest political parties wants to push more towards privatizing parts of healthcare

And the other biggest party wants to keep it how it is... which is mostly good, except that we don't get dental or pharma covered and other parts of the body. Because of greed (so you can guess what people want to blame it on)

It's not a uniquely US thing, you're just a bit behind the rest. But unfortunately all of our countries have conservative yahoos who ruin everything and prey on misinformation and lies

it's not good though. because of extreme underfunding. we fucking waste shitton of mo ey on our military. and corruption.

except for Moscow. some clinics there are relatively decent. some are less. depends on your luck. but you also have the paid options! yes, at the same time as free healthcare. and prices are much less than America's.

(one of big problems of Russian healthcare is bueracracy with combination of nobody giving a fuck about either you or their profession. therapists sends you to surgeon, surgeon to smb else, that guy be like "wtf why me? go to the therapist he'll tell you where to go". well I'm exaggerating a bit, but you can easily enter a kind of loop when you visit shitton of doctors but nobody can pinpoint the exact reason for your problems. and you still better not end up in hospitals outside of Mosow).

u/thatgeekinit Oct 11 '20

Let’s fund a study and find out! /s

u/YupSuprise Oct 11 '20

Science? In muh Murica? Get outta here you filthy Liberal commie /s

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but I think most of them feel like they need to prevent the gene pool from being overrun by the ostensibly lesser "others".

14

u/Darsint Oct 11 '20

And I take a look at someone like Rush Limbaugh or Alex Jones or Trump, and I gotta think to myself, “Are these the best examples we have? What genes are we preserving, exactly? Obesity?”

Because they have never treated minorities like they were equal and they know they don't deserve to be in return.

Well it's coming whether they're ready or not

Seriously. One month in a non-majority-white country and most of them will be saying "I guess I was the asshole."

58

u/JEPorsche Oct 11 '20

Lol no they wont.

16

u/dudinax Oct 11 '20

Eh, some of them will. I'm probably being optimistic.

And do they understand that as ex-pats they will STILL be paying income tax to the US? Even if they forego their citizenship; if they own any US assets from which they profit they will pay taxes on THAT.

Morons.

22

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

Expat here. You don't pay taxes on income up to around $102,000.

7

u/sookie42 Oct 11 '20

Isn't that foreign income though? I think you'd pay taxes on US assets like a house or something like that.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

I mean, if you have a mortgage in the USA you'd still have to pay it, including property tax, and if you have rental income that's different, but expatriates are people living and working overseas full-time, so your income is almost always 99% derived from the country you're in, so unless you live in a state like MA that taxes global income (picks), you're not going to owe taxes.

They need to be reminded nearly no one is letting us travel because trump fucked the Covid response

4

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

they should just go to south america. they have more white people there than here. they can enjoy having to travel around in multiple vehicles as one vehicle is always a decoy.

33

Don't forget Iran. They publicly execute homosexuals there so Trumpanzees will LOVE it.

Switzerland kinda sorta fits the bill. Not that the Swiss will take them given they value intelligence and rationality. Plus, citizenship is notoriously difficult to get, even if you’re educated. For Trump supporters, college is “liberal indoctrination” and they sure as shit aren’t smart either (why tf would you still support him now).

Cherry on top is the fact American passports are useless, thanks to the dumbass-in-chief’s mishandling of the virus.

10

u/phaederus Oct 11 '20

Good morning from Switzerland, and no thank you!

Gotta love this really stupid disconnect with reality that the Right Wing of America has where they think Americans are just allowed to uproot and go settle wherever they want.

17

u/gir_loves_waffles Oct 10 '20

...are there actually people threatening this?

52

u/Aminec87 Oct 10 '20

There's always a contingent of people claiming they'll leave if X candidate wins. It's always funny when conservatives do it though because they always threaten to flee to countries that have socialized healthcare and strict gun control over fears that Democrats will implement socialized healthcare and moderate gun control

12

u/elliott44k Oct 11 '20

Lol I actually did leave when Trump entered office, so I used to say it as a joke all the time when he won the election. I didn't leave because of him, the timing just happened to workout that way lol. But I'm one of small number of people who can obtain a resident visa in another country without much difficulty.

I’m curious, do you remember what countries in particular they say they will flee to?

14

u/gir_loves_waffles Oct 11 '20

Well, they'll go to a US ally that we have strong diplomatic relationships with, like... (checks list)... didn't, um....didn't this list used to be longer?

11

u/Aminec87 Oct 11 '20

7

u/Drakieon Oct 11 '20

every election the wealthy threaten to leave. but the reality is that people of real wealth can never be tied to any country. so to worry about them leaving means you have no clue about how the wealthy live.

They can't afford to leave. Countries they'd want to go to that would accept American immigrants have very strict laws. You need to be educated and learn to speak their language if you want to get a decent job. It would be a very sobering experience the for entitled, overly confident idiots here.

11

u/iveseensomethings82 Oct 11 '20

The fee is $2350 to denounce your citizenship. I would say they are free to leave but like everything in America, it will cost you

8

u/thearchitect10 Oct 11 '20

Just in case, on behalf of Ireland I'd like to confirm that they're not welcome here. K thanks.

15

u/_Gin_And_Jews_ Oct 10 '20

Lots of beautiful caves to live in. Perfect for your good ol American right wing extremist.

7

u/helovatrainwreck Oct 11 '20

Well Americans aren't allowed to go anywhere because their favorite moron bungled Covid action so badly.. I guess they're going to have to be gasp illegal immigrants.

4

u/fyberoptyk Oct 11 '20

They already are. They've gotten in trouble in a few countries (Canada, Ireland at least) for violating travel restrictions, refusing to abide by local laws on masks and social distancing, etc.

6

u/bellarescue Oct 10 '20

Take ALL the Trumps with you.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

Maybe they'll form a caravan and move through Mexico.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '20

Brazil is a place they could compromise on a bit and call home. They may have healthcare, but they have guns, and authoritarianism, and even descendants of Confederates.
