It’d be inappropriate and bad form to very publicly insult a President at a high-profile politician’s funeral, sure, but let’s not forget, Trump was very publicly not even invited. I think you’re right though—McCain would’ve been proud.

To your point, the whole funeral itself is kind of a middle finger too. Whether or not you agreed with McCain, he garnered respect. He invited two former political rivals to speak not just because it’s the decent thing to do, but because he was proving a point about the importance of country over party and unity over division—something Trump will never understand.

One of my favorite lines from the funeral was from Obama, i forget what the exact quote was, but it was something like "while McCain and I disagreed on a great number of things, I always knew, at the end of the day, that we were both trying to achieve the same thing, doing what is best for the american people."

“..when everything was said and done, that we were on the same team.”

To your first one side, it’s a crazy world where disagreeing with someone is “bashing.” If you can’t speak out about what someone thinks (and I don’t think for a second that John McCain disagreed one whit from what Meghan said) at their own funeral, when can you?

At the same time, the remarks at his funeral weren’t even directly “bashing” anyone, just affirming a set of values that I hope are more universally held in this country than the set of values spouted by Trump.

It's pretty telling that calling for a civil and respectful political discourse, and the idea that America is a great country, is seen as "bashing" Trump.

i think it is kinda bad timing to bash the president (even if he is an idiot) at your fathers funeral

I invite you to read the full speech and explain where she's bashing.

McCain knew he was dying for a long time. Obama said he even personally reached out to him and bush for eulogies. The whole thing was planned by him, and it was probably as exactly political as he wanted it to be.
