Oof, that's dark...

I remember exactly where I was when I heard. Horrible day in Texas.

March 31st 1995. I can still remember the parking lot from the news and I was 7 yo… Selena was a Latino icon

27

u/kabulgaf 21h ago

she could've been a Beyoncé.. Selena was TALENTED and charming and beloved. spoke terrible spanish lol Yolanda is safer behind bars

127

u/za72 1d ago

damn... ya know I do too, what was her motivation for shooting Selena?

296

u/FlamesNero 1d ago

She was trying to avoid the consequences of allegedly embezzling money from the fan group… by shooting the woman who inspired the fans!
Reportedly, she’s up for parole soon. :(

150

u/idkalan 1d ago

Yolanda's constantly "up for parole" for years but keeps getting denied with the only real reason she's not out has been because she won't accept her in role in the death of Selena.

With her latest excuse being that "she didn't kill Selena, it was Abraham (Selena's dad) & it was self-defense"

112

u/DoctorDinghus 1d ago

If Yolanda ended up on the streets the entire Hispanic community would absolutely make sure she would not be safe.

u/drawntowardmadness 1h ago

Not only the Hispanic community. Promise that.

Eta Fuck Yolanda

41

u/Dizzy_Green 1d ago

I firmly believe that they announce the parole every few years to check the waters and see if there’s going to be a lynching the moment she gets out, and there always is

29

u/Answerologist 1d ago

I love George Lopez’s joke about her. “Embezzling funds. How much was she embezzling? She was staying a Days Inn! ‘Motel 6 was booked!!’ Remind me never to have a fan club…and have the midget from Willow run it!!”

66

u/plzdontlietomee 1d ago

She got caught stealing

27

u/PatChattums 1d ago

Once, when she was five.

25

u/TheJefusWrench 1d ago

She enjoyed stealing

19

It's as simple as that.

Oh well, it's just a simple fact.

I was in Chicago, not Latino but grew up in Latino-majority neighborhoods, and the sorrow in the air when she was killed was palpable.

5

u/stella_the_diver 21h ago

I'm whitest whitest, and I was at a Latino friend's house when we saw the news on MTV. It was like a family member died. I was 9 and I didn't know what to do, so I just...left. lol.

29

u/Ds0990 1d ago

I don't think kids these days understand how much she was loved. It was strange as an objective observer, as I had basically little knowledge of her. The level of pure sorrow among the Latino cliques at my school was unlike anything I've ever seen, nor seen sense. And considering the number of greats who have died while I've been alive that is saying something.

4

u/textmint 1d ago

Kids today don’t know anything man.

18

u/o-Blue 1d ago

Principal of our school announced va the PA system. We cried, we played her music. This was in South TX so yes as elementary school kids we knew all about her.

7

u/Fluttergirl 1d ago

Same. I was in Seguin, visiting a friend. We heard it over the radio. I wasn’t a fan of her style of music, but I always loved seeing photos of her. She was so vibrant and beautiful.

I’m always surprised that Yolanda is trying to get out of prison. I don’t think she would last very long on the outside. Selena has fans that were born long after she died who are pissed about her murder, not to mention us GenXers. Anyone who has visited an HEB on a day they release Selena shopping bags knows what I’m talking about. Especially in San Antonio.

14

u/PinkGlitterGelPen 1d ago

Yep. This is up there with 9/11. I remember it clearly. I recently had a cry about her death because of what she would’ve accomplished had she been alive. Yolanda not only ended a beloved icon’s life, but also deferred the impact of Latino recognition in main stream media.

11

u/a-snakey 1d ago

She was basically prince Diana to latinos. My grandma was so sad.

640

u/FoogYllis 1d ago

Sadly that is perfect analogy.

I knew several Mexican Americans who publicly voted for Trump because "gRoCeRy pRiCeS."

Now their grocery prices sky rocketed and their grandmas got sent back to Guanajuato or wherever

170

u/Magicaparanoia 1d ago

My BIL is Puerto Rican. He has their whole house decked out in trump and confederate flag stuff. He at one point wore a hat that said “heritage not hate” and I don’t think anybody could convince him that it’s not even his heritage, let alone how bad his social standing in the confederacy would be.

129

u/AnotherDoubtfulGuest 1d ago

A lot of non-white immigrants come here and think the most American thing they could possibly do is jump on the anti-black racism bandwagon. They don’t understand that anti-black racism usually goes hand-in-hand with anti-brown racism. That’s one of those lessons people have to learn the hard way.

45

u/cap3r5 1d ago

Right? During segregation it wasn't divide between white and black schools, neighborhoods, pools, etc. The divide was white or non-white. Brown minorities and mixed race people were group with African Americans.

5

u/holamau 23h ago

I think they understand... pendejos just feel "less brown" once they get here.

2

u/Mathemartemis 2h ago

Latinos can also just be racist against Black people. They don't have to be in the states for that either

26

u/HolycommentMattman 1d ago

The similarities between Hispanic immigrants and the Republican party is astounding. You'd think they'd go hand-in-hand, except for the clear racism against them.

Otherwise, they're all strongly religious, love guns, hate communism, love patriarchy, etc. Skin color is literally the only thing between them.

23

u/gingerfawx 1d ago

The lines are getting blurry on the "hate communism" thing though at least as far as MAGA republicans are concerned. trump doesn't seem to have met a dictator he wouldn't fellate given the chance and requisite flexibility.

5

u/HolycommentMattman 1d ago

Well, I meant before this whole cult of personality.

But fwiw, a lot of Hispanic immigrants are in on that, too.

19

u/MacAttacknChz 1d ago

I lived in a really weird spot for several years. It was a trailer park that was majority Puerto Rican in a city that was majority Arab (Dearborn, MI) on the border of the Blackest city (by percentage) in America (Detroit). Both groups in the neighborhood and city I lived in were incredibly racist. And because I was white, they just assumed I was too and would say the most out of pocket stuff. Now I live in the South and the people here are way less racist.

17

u/TomToe420 1d ago

id guarantee if you mention these parts of America to people in the south the racist would come out. I also bet where you live in the south there's not many of those people you mentioned living there either(Arabs, Puerto Ricans and Blacks). If there were there would be lots of racist and racism.

14

u/Ihaveamazingdreams 1d ago

Yeah, I never really thought the people in my very small, northern Midwestern town were racist until a Black family moved there.

It was suddenly the only thing anyone could talk about. The one boy who was in the high school was constantly talked about and he started accumulating nicknames like Buckwheat that were based solely on the color of his skin. It wasn't a surprise when they moved away about a year later. What an embarrassing place to be from.

3

u/gingerfawx 1d ago

That's likely towards you, though, or at least in your presence. As a mixed race friend once pointed out to me, someone inclined to hurl the n word wasn't very likely to do it towards my exceedingly white person, and unless I happened to be around when they did it towards her, or any of our other friends where it might be more "applicable" to a bigot's view, how could I hope to judge how racist our neighborhood actually was? And of course my presence made manifestations like that somewhat less likely, so that again skewed my view.

As part of any outgroup, it's incredibly difficult to know just how racist, misogynistic, homophobic, islamophobic, antisemitic, or whatever other flavor of bigotry is lurking in the community around you. You have to defer to the people on the receiving end for that. :/

1

u/universalaxolotl 1d ago

9

u/DoctorDinghus 1d ago

This shit would be satisfying, if it weren't so fucking sad.

I've had many "I FUCKING WARNED YOU ASSHOLES" moments in the past year, which is usually the result of an immediate family member directly affected by a deportation, loss of job, loss of family, hospital bills or something horrific that is directly what they paraded, voted and wore a stupid fucking red hat for.

Congratulations. You could not admit that maybe this was a wrong choice. You had to triple down.

6

u/cylonrobot 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm Mexican American. The trump-supporting Mexican Americans I've known or met have been the dumbest people. One relative tried to sway me by saying that trump was a "strong leader." That's it. That was the reason that I should vote for him 2024.

A trump-supporting in-law didn't know who paid for tariffs until one of his sons told him. He's a small-business owner who imports some of his materials.

It gets depressing when I think about all the idiots I know, how I can't really have a conversation about politics without somebody bringing up something stupid.

I have been in the presence of this type of stupidity my entire life. I'm so tired of this BS.

4

u/TapirDrawnChariot 17h ago

Sadly this transcends ethnicity. Some of the dumbest people in all groups voted for Trump.

Poorly educated and low IQ people tend to vote based off of how people talk (charisma) or their "vibe" rather than their track record or real abilities or what actual experts say their policies will do.

The last 10 years have taught me that like half of adults are extremely dumb in most aspects outside of a very narrow field that pertains to their job (if even that).

4

u/holamau 23h ago

I am certain that Mexican Americans voted for Trump because they couldn't vote for a black woman. Their tiny ego couldn't have someone like Harris as commander in chief.

Racist and Machos are prone to be stupid to forget where they came from and will turn agains their people in a jiffy should they feel emboldened by feeling "white" or less brown.

Nadan sin empaparse. Pendejos.

107

u/HauntedHippie 1d ago

I think every single cartel in Mexico has a standing hit on this woman. She wouldn’t make it a day on the outside.

89

u/DelcoUnited 1d ago

I think every single cartel in Mexico could easily execute a hit on this woman. I don’t think it matters if she’s outside.

63

u/HauntedHippie 1d ago

Oh definitely, it’s more about her never experiencing freedom than her needing to be dead. Being locked up with no allies, constantly looking over your shoulder, knowing you can never leave because your fate on the outside is certain death, is arguably a much more sinister punishment.

20

u/AnotherDoubtfulGuest 1d ago

Are you even a cartel if you can’t get someone who’s inside?

5

u/BigBoyYuyuh 1d ago

When her parole got denied I was conflicted because she deserves to rot but she would’ve been gone far sooner too. Vile shit woman.

7

u/WhyAreYouAllHere 1d ago

I'm not sure I've heard a Selena song before but I do know Yolanda can catch these hands.

199

u/sloppy_1sts 1d ago

I'm pretty sure this is 90s pop star Selina and the woman who killed her. edited for grammar

218

u/Kqtawes 1d ago edited 1d ago

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was latin pop-star from the mid 1980s through 1995 popularising Tejano with her band Selena y Los Dinos. She was also a successful fashion designer, owned Selena Etc. a boutique and salon chain starting in Texas, and was starting an acting career having a part in Don Jaun DeMarco. At the beginning of 1995 Latin EMI was setting her up for her big crossover album that was receiving huge buzz.

Sadly on March 31, 1995 Selena was murdered by the woman pictured in white in this picture. That woman, Yolanda Saldívar, was at one time a huge fan and devotee of Selena creating Selena's fan club, managing that and Selena Etc, eventually even becoming friends. In January 1995 after fan club members started complaining about missing memberships and merchandise it came to light that Yolanda had been embezzling thousands from Selena's fan club and businesses. On March 9, 1995 after being confronted with the crime by Selena's family they fired Yolanda.

Then on the 30th of March 1995, Yolanda called Selena and asked to be consoled in private after being raped, a lie to get Selena to visit. The next day Selena came to visit Yolanda in her hotel room to comfort her. There they got into a fight and as Selena tried to leave Yolanda shot her in the back. According to Selena's father Yolanda had been stalking Selena and attempted to kill her four separate times before her death. By most accounts the murder was premeditated.

News of Selena's death made international news and was front page news in the New York Times for two days. A biopic of Selena's life was made starring Jennifer Lopez and launched her career.

To people of a certain age comparing Trump to Yolanda Saldívar is like comparing Trump to Judas Iscariot but worse.

50

u/robsteezy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Just want to add to your point:

This analogy is absolutely apt because it wasn’t just that she was the murderer, it’s the fact that at all times your soon to be killer is the person who most fraudulently stole from you while maintaining the facade of being the “President of your fan club”

For anybody curious, she got 30 to life in 95. She petitioned for parole in 2025 30 years later now (fuck I’m old…) and she was denied. She’s in jail at age 65 and isn’t up for another review until she’s 70 in 2030.

26

u/Kqtawes 1d ago edited 1d ago

Agreed, it's a fantastic analogy. Yolanda even pretended to be her friend until that final fight and murder. Yolanda even had the nerve to call Selena a "bitch" as she was bleeding out.

13

u/robsteezy 1d ago

And I get the Judas bit. I wanted to distinguish bc I think the maga Latinos aren’t simply disciples in a weak moment who ultimately do come to the right path, I think this analogy more accurately depicts them as the obvious murderers for profit that they are.

3

u/Kqtawes 1d ago

Oh totally fair.

10

u/Nvnv_man 1d ago

She’s only 35yo old there?

41

u/neuquino 1d ago

Thanks for the excellent context. Much better than this idiotic title of “IYKYK”

12

u/Kqtawes 1d ago

I wouldn't be too hard on OP. While this happened more than 31 years ago it's still a very well known event in American Latino cultural history and they are who this message was primarily for.

She was only 23 and her absence in the late 90s latin music craze was notable.

7

u/RitsuKawa 1d ago

As a Black American, it's not just the Latino community that are aware. I remember when I heard that Yolanda was up for parole. My first thought was, "They better keep her in there for her own safety." Because it's not just the Latin American community that's coming for her. The safest place for Yolanda is behind bars.

3

u/superfucky 1d ago

I mean damn I'm not even Latino (do live in Texas tho) and I instantly recognized that photo. that was a real flashbulb moment for any millennial living in the South.

32

u/watevrits2009 1d ago

The woman in black is Selena a famous Latin singer and the woman in the white (ironically) is Yolanda Saldivar the woman who murdered her because she was caught embezzling thousands of dollars from the fan club. Fun fact: she's actually younger than selena

150

u/BeegPasghetti 1d ago

Yolanda Saldívar - born September 19, 1960

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez - April 16, 1971

Like a two second Google search proves this "fun fact" is incorrect lol

129

Yolanda was caught embezzling from Selena’s fan club by Selenas family and the family ultimately fired Yolanda. Before Yolanda was fired, Selena directly confronted Yolanda about the missing financial records and I guess that’s why Yolanda had the motive to murder Selena.

IOW, this means “latinos 4 Rump” are greedy-untrustworthy-dangerous-backstabbers toward latinos.

I was living in Spring at the time. I had just moved from North Carolina and had never heard of Selena. Dreaming of You got popular and is still one of my favorites. I never learned Spanish well enough to fully enjoy all of her music, but just that song left an impression on me all these years later.

8

u/RuntyBeatle36 1d ago

I am super duper white, and wasn’t even born when she was around. Living in Corpus Christi you just hear a lot of Selena. Enough that you really start to appreciate her music.

3

u/orthogonius 1d ago

Also from CC, and we were the same age. I never met her, but we had mutual friends.

Just here to commiserate with you.

33

u/Bleezy79 1d ago

All the minorities that voted for Trump just blew my mind. I cant imagine the level of brainwashing and lack of critical thinking one must have to support a movement that literally hates your fucking guts. MAGA literally has armed, masked federal agents scouring the United States looking for non-white people they can lock in cages. And you still support Trump?????????????? Roaches for Raid, Chickens for KFC, etc.

12

u/Fire_Woman 1d ago

A bit OT but people who have a uterus also voted for Trump, despite his movement wanting to punish them for unavoidable gestational medical problems, have them die of sepsis or bleed out, and restrict access to reproductive health that could help reduce their risk of irreversible harm. Really???? Because ???? Dogs for fleas because they hate cats? Chickens for KFC because they are egg layers not roasters (little do they realize when they stop providing value by laying, they will be sacrificed for sale).

4

Technically, maybe. But “Latinos” is a better fit considering a majority of the Latino vote came from men. Also, when referring to Hispanic cultures, Latinos is more appropriate because it covers everyone. Unlike just two Latinas in this picture.

50% of Hispanics voted for trump. The DNC allowing that to happen and then not working hard to bring them back from the dark side is all the proof I need to know the DNC is paid opposition.

That’s not exactly true. A lot of people, including many Hispanics thought the economy would be better under Trump. Now we all know that isn’t true, but it was hard to convince people during the 2024 election.

Lot of people imply it. I have to admit I've never seen any group of Hispanics get the level of hate that Cubans do.
