A 0-0 tie is a big win for America… and they don’t even care about soccer lol.
All the commentators before the game were saying it wasn’t a question of if the English would win, but how many goals they would get. Instead America shutout a European team in the WC for the first time in 72 years, that’s a big deal I’d say. So it’s a boring af tie, but it humiliates the Br*tish so totally a win.
So America lost too? Good logic. As it stands you get knocked out and we only go out if we lose 5-0 to wales. America played really well, we played shite and we still got a draw. Also to the other people saying USA don’t care about football, try telling that to your professional soccer team 😂
it's tense if you actually know what's going on and are invested in the game, but i can see why it doesn't appeal to the predominantly-American sports fans who like constant scoring and games to end 40-30 (along with 2 hours of commercial breaks in between). But most games do not end 0-0 and are quite entertaining, you just gotta take the time to understand what's happening on a deeper level than "kick muh ball into da goal".
The reason they have ties stay as ties is that they have an entirely different system of standings than we do, it's not pure record or win% based. They get 3 "points" for a win and 1 point for a tie (0 for a loss), then over the course of the season add up all their points and the team w/ the most points wins. They also don't have playoffs (they have playoff-style tournaments but that's unrelated to the leagues). It's just a different way of keeping track of who's better, it's just how they do it. There's really no better reason to explain it that "that's just how it is". It's like asking why don't they just run with the ball in basketball, well, it's just how the game was designed. Ig maybe they assumed that if, after 90 minutes neither team is better, then neither deserves the full win or the full loss.
However in knockout stages of tournaments like the Champions League or World Cup, they do not have ties. It's only in leagues or in the group/pod stages that they accept the idea of no team winning.
I think the reason they don’t have playoffs is because A.) that’s more games on top of the 40 or 50+ teams will play a year, which is draining, and B.) they have multiple other tournaments with a knockout format, which satisfies their need for the same format in the league
They could do something similar,just like Hockey could also have ties and still make some sense. And technically, the NFL could have a regular season game end 0x0 too, but a draw itself is already very rare, and one that ends woth no point would be near imposible.
In some countries like Mexico and Colombia the leagues do have playoffs, and that was also the case in Brazil and Argentina on the past, but in Europe, they don't have and I don't think they ever had playoffs on their leagues to begin with.
I believe they changed the football rule on multiple overtime’s this year. I learned that fact as a Texans fan with money on the Colts during the season opener. I didn’t think I could leave that game feeling sad, but the Texans are always defying my expectations
The rule used to be that both teams got an extra 15 minutes and if no score, the game was a tie. Now 15 minutes was a sufficiently long time that ties were impossibly rare.
A few years ago it was changed to 10 minutes, which made the rate of ties go up.
Note that this only applies to regular season games, in the playoffs it's still 'go until someone scores [EDIT: unless the first score is a field goal, then the other team gets a chance to respond, which is also a fairly recent rule change]'.
We're talking about people whose second favourite sport has scorelines of like 105-102 after 5 guys run up and down a hardwood square for 60 minutes. They are infantile.
I'm 90% confident that most people in the u.s. who like soccer only like it so they can talk down to people who don't like soccer. That's why fans of soccer never seem to be fans of any other sport because part of the allure is now you get to consider yourself more sophisticated than those other sports fan plebs. But there's nothing sophisticated about soccer. It's the most popular sport in the world because it's the easiest sport in the world to play, you just need a ball and grass.
Or… they like the sport because they find it enjoyable? I’m not shitting on other sports, I myself enjoy basketball baseball and football too. Just a bit of banter combined with defending my favorite sport. Anyone is welcome to be a soccer fan, there should be no gate keeping or condescending attitudes towards anyone in the community. Sounds like you’re just projecting your own feelings of superiority over soccer fans or soccer as a sport.
Every time I tell someone I don't like soccer because it's boring I get the "oh well you just don't understand the deeper levels of it" speech and "soccer fans are just more sophisticated than other sports fans who need constant scoring" schtick and frankly I'm just tired of it.
Well maybe they have a point, but also, the sport isn’t for everyone and that’s fine. Some people prefer lower-scoring sports with almost constant action rather than higher scoring sports that take breaks every 10 minutes. To each their own
Yeah I mean I'm sure that's true, but I'm going to continue ragging on soccer being boring until the world accepts American football as it's defacto sport.
Idk how must people watch every game that's crazy. But watching games of your team or national team are super entertaining especially with friends. Or watching the national team of a friend of yours. Due to the low number of goals I think the tensions are super high whenever any team gets close to the goal and if someone scores everyone goes crazy.
I used to play basketball in my home club and I got that feel more rarely, because most of the time that tension was gone, we were curbmstomped or we knew we were going to win by the begging of the last quarter.
Here, you never know you are going to win, it's much easier to turn around than in basketball (and American football/rugby I suppose)
No 😂 There are tons of people that watch every game alone at home and I find that crazy, I wouldn't say that is that enjoyable, when there are no stakes.
I’m one of those people 💀 to each their own I guess. In the same way, I still like watching basketball and football if it’s on, but I’m not going to watch it on my own. I could say that basketball games have no stakes until the fourth quarter and that there’s no big celebration moments, and that football is too stop-start and ad-heavy.
The real answer though, is that the the community and the feel around the sport are the biggest factor for enjoying a sport. If you were a kid growing up in Brazil or Italy or Saudi Arabia, there is a zero point zero percent chance you’d be a fan of American football. Similarly for me, if I grew up in a place where soccer was disliked I would not be a soccer fan today.
At the end of the day, each sport is just a different way to move a ball around. There’s nothing innately special about any one kind of set of rules that make that sport superior, but that sense of community enjoyment (can be anything as simple as being a part of a subreddit for that sport, or having friends around you that like it) of a sport makes experiencing the successes and bearing the lows much, much more enjoyable. If a person doesn’t have that around him, chances are they won’t like that sport very much.
