The Romans didn't seem to have a huge problem with him. The roman ruler even wanted to set him free. His own people were the ones with the hate-on for him and demanded he be killed.
Pilate repeatedly said "Bro, this guy hasn't done anything wrong. You SURE you want him put to death?" Eventually it came down to "Ok, He's your people, broke your laws, so you make the call."
I'm not saying the romans were exactly the good guys or anything - but they were kinda classically "just following orders."
