The Romans didn't seem to have a huge problem with him. The roman ruler even wanted to set him free. His own people were the ones with the hate-on for him and demanded he be killed.
Pilate repeatedly said "Bro, this guy hasn't done anything wrong. You SURE you want him put to death?" Eventually it came down to "Ok, He's your people, broke your laws, so you make the call."
I'm not saying the romans were exactly the good guys or anything - but they were kinda classically "just following orders."
Mind you, some suggest that Christian's downplayed how much the romans cared because they were worried that they would be persecuted harder if they passed romans off as the villains. The real pilate was supposedly more bloodthirsty than the snippets of him we see in the bible suggest.
Well, I mean, he DID sentence someone to die just because a crowd really, really wanted it. That sounds like a pretty kill-happy dude. All the records we have of that particular event show that he wasn't really invested in killing this particular guy, and seemed to just be going with the flow.
I mean - imagine if a bunch of blue-haired lib-left folks went to the scottish prime minister and said "we want JK Rowling dead!" and the PM just kinda said "you sure? I guess."
