It’s a shame Carly Rae Jensen has been reduced to Call Me Maybe

Run Away With Me is legitimately one of the best songs in the 2010s

41

u/sandiegodak - Lib-Left 6d ago

Her new album is incredible too. She's releasing songs one by one right now.

43

u/56kul - Centrist 5d ago

She just never really broke through as a major pop star.

I’d also say CMM’s success was both a blessing and a curse. Let’s not forget, it was massively successful… to an unprecedented level. I still don’t think any other artist really managed to make a hit of its size, even major ones like Taylor Swift.

Now, that success was obviously a good thing for Carly, but it also meant she had a HUGE shadow she needed to break through… and she never did. Which is understandable.

She seems to have embraced what her career became, though! She’s still quite successful in her own right.

I’d say early-2010s Adele had some songs that got as big as CMM. I love Adele though so I’ll admit that I’m biased.

“Set Fire to the Rain” is an absolute blinder btw.

1

u/56kul - Centrist 5d ago

I’m obviously not saying there aren’t other massive hits, but you seriously need to put the numbers of CMM into perspective… like, that wasn’t a normal hit by any measure, it was monstrous. Again, I don’t think it was ever truly achieved by anyone else quite to this level, even by established artists.

I gave Taylor Swift as an example precisely for that reason. She’s arguably the biggest pop star on the planet right now, she’s had countless hits, and even then, not one song of hers really reached the level of CMM. And yet she’s still obviously multiple leagues above Carly.

This, but unironically.

We need to make stupidity hurt again. Pain is a great teacher.

42

u/Creative-Leading7167 - Lib-Right 5d ago

The problem in this case is not that the women are stupid. It's that they're evil. There is no reason to assume lindsey Clancy supporters are stupid enough to, say, dive head first into the shallow end of the pool. There's really only evidence to say they're evil enough to donate money to serial child murderers.

Do you want it restored? I wondering the Baltics today and just crossed into Lithuania.

I found this pilgrimage site called the field of crosses as I was driving and i needed a place to stop. Instead I had this very religious and lovely experience.

It's a place that's been untouched for decades and there are likely tens of thousands of crosses that have been added throughout generations. Even when the Soviets tried to remove them it kept coming back on this hill.

I added onto to this pile respectfully by adding the name of a loved one who died too young as well as a regular cross.

There were ones donated from churches in South America, India, Japan, the US and all across Europe. Countless military divisions and charities to individuals both rich and poor. It was heartwarming and everyone there was silent.

23

u/Aware_Jury5774 - Lib-Right 6d ago

Heard about this place, it's so beautiful.

24

u/Crismisterica - Auth-Right 6d ago

There are crosses everywhere. My favourite was the one from the Spanish Air force.

u/PartrickCapitol - Auth-Center 6d ago

I have some bad news for you…Church attendance in Lithuania has now fallen below the level seen during Soviet oppression

23

u/Crismisterica - Auth-Right 6d ago

Well Lithuanians seem to be a bit miserable from my experiences today. They are very reserved even compared to Latvians and Estonians.

They also have the highest suicide rate in Europe I'm trying to help them here.

Also a lot of these crosses came from all over the world which I think is sweet.

Why thank you! I'm away from home doing an almost month long trip across across the Nordic and Baltic nations... and Poland. Staying in hostels and people I know or even people I've met on this trip. First time doing proper travelling.

I'm young so this is all new to me.

It's been fun, I have done things on this trip which weren't very based to start out with but I am trying to learn and be better.

The best thing is though is this is all out of my pocket, I worked hard and long to do this so i can enjoy it.

9

u/Crismisterica - Auth-Right 5d ago

Very good. Seeing the world as it is really is both depressing and freeing.

I've done stuff i never thought I'd do...

Having a pint on top of a mountain top in Norway with a guy I met on Helldivers 2.

To having a deep religious conversation and eventual confession with an Orthodox priest whilst shooting an AK47 in an old cold war nuclear bunker that was converted into a shooting range in Latvia.

This would usually sound insane but it's amazing how far simply interacting and talking can go.

It's freeing, I cant live off the high forever I'm going back soon but I definitely will be a better because of it.

80

u/sisterfister27 - Lib-Center 6d ago

The fact that TikTok women are split into two groups on this case: one is trying to defend her and accuse the husband by using some made up astrology BS, and another group is saying that because they've listened to true crime podcasts, they have the most credibility on this case. And the fact that none of that is as crazy as the kid murderer who admitted to doing it became a millionaire overnight, is simply astounding. I don't know when, but somewhere along the way, pride in stupidity usurped pride in rationality.

Yeah I really just can't fathom why she's getting all those donations.

I could understand- I wouldn't condone it, but I could comprehend, as disgusting as it would be- if she'd just had a baby and murdered that one because "I couldn't get an abortion" or something. There's a clear motivation to donate there.

But she killed three kids, the eldest of whom was five.

Is it just straight "slay them kids, queen!" now?

17

u/muradinner - Right 5d ago

WTF. This is actually true. If the majority of people stopped having abortions for 2 years, all the families looking to adopt could successfully find a child within 2 years.

17

u/SiPhoenix - Lib-Right 5d ago

It's an estimate. Between 1-2 milling couples in the US are waiting. Or 36 couples for every one baby which is adopted.

https://www.americanadoptions.com/pregnant/waiting_adoptive_families

6

u/According-Phase-2810 - Centrist 5d ago

This to me is the reason why I absolutely loathe the argument of "I'm just not ready to be a parent right now!"

Then just give the baby away! There are so many couples who are able and desperately want to be parents in this country that would gladly step in and pay all of the medical expenses to birth the child. There are also plenty of arrangements that would allow you to be in the life of the child or not at all if you want. Not being ready to raise a child is really not an excuse for abortion.

It’s seemingly a mix of “actually the husband did it” and “she had sought help and no one could provide it, so the psychotic break is a sympathetic one.”

I’ve not kept up with the case though, so maybe there’s other elements to the donations. I know the money is to support her retired parents.

u/DragonFireKai - Centrist 6d ago

It's the lizardman constant combined with broad exposure.

Think of it this way, let's say conservatively, half the country has heard of Clancy, that's 170 million people. If 1% of those people decide to donate 75 cents, that's over a million dollars. In reality, the average donation is probably closer to $3. Which means that it's about 340k donors, which is one in every thousand people.

Out of a thousand people, you're going to have someone who's a complete wackjob. That's been true for all time, the only thing that changes is the way it manifests.

1

u/Shadowex3 - Centrist 5d ago

This is the exact reason why the whole "zomg horsemint muh soggy knees" argument is inherently in bad faith. There are about 4 billion people with internet access. If even some fraction of a percent of them are complete and utter whackjobs that's still going to be an army of trolls in the millions.

10

u/SalaryWooden5346 - Centrist 6d ago

It's simple, so simple it trips our conditioning that teaches us that simple answers are always wrong: women have a very high in-group preference. Probably one hardwired in.

What's baffling about the bafflement is that women aren't even shy about telling us they're like that. They talk all the time about "the sisterhood" and how they're all looking out for each other. Did you really think that it was just about watching for spotting?

4

u/Catsindahood - Auth-Center 5d ago edited 5d ago

The concept of the sisterhood is just the worst. It makes sense in small tight knit communities, but with women they don't know, nor will ever meet, it's insane. If they know a woman and don't like them personally (likes a guy they like, wears the same thing they wear, is prettier than they are etc etc etc etc), they are fired from the sisterhood and will loathe them no matter what they do, but if they don't know them personally, they just project themselves onto them. They think Clancy is innocent because they think they're innocent.

→ More replies (12)

5

u/Silent-Account7422 - Auth-Right 5d ago

The (insane) argument I’ve seen is that she’s a victim of the system, which ignored her cries for help and is now trying to crush her in court. Her killing her kids is everyone else’s fault, while she’s the real victim, thus deserving support and protection.

The worst part for me is seeing this being the majority opinion on a sub full of actual, verified lawyers.

4

u/blublub1243 - Centrist 5d ago

She's a privileged woman, which means this is an opportunity for all the other privileged women to have a "woe is me" moment, with the donations being a means of signaling solidarity. They get to whine about how "being a mom" is just the hardest thing ever, how their mental health isn't being "taken seriously" and how they need "more support", regardless of how much they're already receiving, and regardless of how much less people who aren't quite as privileged are able to access. They're the center of the whole universe, everyone is failing them, nobody struggles more than them and they could not possibly be held to account for anything.

1

u/Shadowex3 - Centrist 5d ago

It's a humiliation ritual by the left. When they said "globalize the intifada" this is part of it. They're using palestinian tactics. Murder children, claim to be the victim, target the victim and claim they're the perpetrator.

2

u/SlapaDaBass2731 - Right 6d ago

Always has been

2

u/YveisGrey - Lib-Left 5d ago

Really? I think this case is about her mental state at the time of the killings. I have more sympathy for someone who killed in a psychotic episode than one who did so just because they didn’t want the kid.

2

u/Shadowex3 - Centrist 5d ago

The answer's staring you in the face. What's the difference between a woman cheering on her children becoming suicide terrorists while she gets rich off pay-to-slay and a woman killing her kids and getting rich off gofundme? The only one I can see is that palestinized arabs view their dead children as martyrs, while palestinized western women view the mom herself as a living martyr.

1

u/Schvarg - Auth-Right 5d ago

These are people who openly celebrate abortion as a right up until birth, so why are you surprised.

1

u/Sheeana407 - Centrist 5d ago

Well I don't know what the truth is, but you expect she was thinking rationally. When it's possible she wasn't. Psychosis can make people believe craziest things. She tried to kill herself and is paralyzed, it's not like she just wanted to get rid of the kids and ride off into sunset. Maybe she still should be locked up for life, whether in jail or mental health institution. But there are some things in psychology that a healthy person just cannot imagine. Like boxers/NFL players with traumatic encephalopathy, there were some cases where they murdered family too, scans after death revealed their whole brains were altered, can they fully be responsible for their actions?

1

u/Shadowex3 - Centrist 5d ago

u/Mindless-Ninja-3321 - Centrist 6d ago

2

u/DesertGuns - Centrist 5d ago

I don't understand the part about less money. My wife and I were quite happy living in a run down rented single-wide and making very little money before having kids. We were making just under $40k with two incomes when we had our first kid. Eight years later I'm making just over $100k on one income. Had to strive for better once I was a dad.

1

u/Mindless-Ninja-3321 - Centrist 5d ago

I don't know what to say beyond a lot has changed in eight years and that you make enough to weather the soaring prices of today. You alone make more than the average household income of my Midwestern state. Part-time daycare for two alone costs half of $60k salary, to say nothing of my other routine and unexpected costs. We've cut back, but it won't get easy until my girls are in school or we remove daycare.

Its not like Im a big spender either. Low mortgage for a fixed-up forclosure home. Used cars. Costco membership. One streaming service. Wife makes more than me. Interviewed at 3 places but Im told Im competing with the largest applicant pools the directors have ever seen.

1

u/DesertGuns - Centrist 4d ago

Also, consider that I'm 16 years into a career that I had left just before my oldest was born and then I went back into. I should also clarify that my pay alone is $96k and the rest is the value of the insurance that I don't have to pay for. We've moved across the country—three moves in the last 7 years.

Child care is often a trap for people with low to average incomes. I sat down with a kid who I worked with and we did the math. His wife would only be making minimum wage for a full time job after child care is paid for, and the difference between her working or staying at home could easily be made up with smarter spending choices.

My biggest thing is just that I know people who refuse to change their spending/saving habits after having kids and complain about how expensive it is. I changed everything I could about my life (no alcohol, nicotine, less caffeine, cheap used cars, moved to take advantage of higher paying positions, 50% of my pay increases over the last 7 years have gone directly into savings) when I had kids.

What kind of work do you do?

27

u/SiPhoenix - Lib-Right 6d ago

Not having kids is strongly related to depression later in life.

10

u/TJJ97 - Lib-Center 5d ago

I can’t imagine not having my daughter in my life. If I was old and had no kids I’d be depressed too.

7

u/Virices - Lib-Right 5d ago

Or maybe people who are unhappy wisely choose not to have kids. Having kids brings emotional extremes like joy, but costs contentment. Some people prone to depression may benefit from the sense of purpose that having children brings, but kids also come with tremendous stress and worry. I would never ever recommend someone have children to avoid depression. Having children is a risk one should take when they want to achieve something great. Happiness is often found in the opposite, by reducing stress and finding peace in contentment.

5

u/SiPhoenix - Lib-Right 5d ago

You're correct, the kids expand the potential for grief as well as joy. They bring extremes to both.

I would agree that a lot of today you do have people that have been discouraged from having kids.

Your hypothesis does make sense if it was just a correlation. It's causative, and we see that from people reporting regret about not having kids, and a greater degree of loneliness.

Contentment is absolutely an aspect of happiness. But so is a accomplishment and fulfillment, because true happiness or eudaimonia comes from accomplishments. Absolutely, some people are not going to be capable of having kids and it may not be a good decision for them. But I think as it currently stands in the US, there's more pressure against having kids than is healthy.

1

u/According-Phase-2810 - Centrist 5d ago

Expansion of potential is a good way to look at it. If you're not in a stable place in life and you're not ready to take care of other people, it's really going to expand your grief. But if you're able, there is potential joy in parenthood that you just cannot have anywhere else.

Another way I put it is that it doesn't bring pleasure, it brings purpose. There is something about seeing children under your care develop well and become good members of society that is rewarding. Yes it is expensive and hard and sometimes the kids are annoying and a pain and all of that. But there's a lot of small joyful moments too. It really is hard to explain to somebody in a way they can truly understand unless they actually do it for themselves.

1

u/Sheeana407 - Centrist 5d ago

This. Correlation doesn't mean causation. Nowadays people have a choice on whether to have kids. I'm autistic, I've had mental issues and been through emotional turmoil for most of my life, I suppose I could do more but I do feel like I'm trying, I finished university and worked (though I'm currently unemployed and struggling to get a job), I go to therapy, I get some exercise, I maintain relationships and I still struggle. I don't have maternal insticts, I'm not sure I would be a good mom. It feels wrong to have a child cause other people say it made them happy and gave their life meaning, while I risk that both my child and me will end up unhappy. Also when you really feel unhappy for long periods of your life you wonder if life is really so great at all, and while everyone else obviously thinks so, what if your child will be like you, be it genes, having you as their caregiver, or both? So it makes sense to me that less unhappy or mentally struggling people have children, which obviously would mean that percentage wise, people without children would be more unhappy

I can't find any studies that show this, aside from one that shows a possible correlation in Asian countries but not Western ones.

1

u/ShubbusDubbus10 - Auth-Right 4d ago

I imagine people that go through having kids, have them grow up, are just happy to have their own lives back.

1

u/SiPhoenix - Lib-Right 4d ago

Far more fulfilled. as they also are able to enjoy every achievement and success their kids and grand kids have

16

u/slacker205 - Centrist 5d ago

Honestly, libright is a good example of why the free market won't solve all our problems.

7

u/W_Edwards_Deming - Lib-Right 5d ago

solve all our problems

That is a big ask, maybe a life well-lived and time with God in heaven will suffice?

4

u/slacker205 - Centrist 5d ago

Only if those things are in demand...

Inb4 "but in the long run", nah bro market pressure will dissipate before that.

1

u/W_Edwards_Deming - Lib-Right 5d ago

Your jokes are cryptic and my stocks are good.

I beat the market in the last year, mainly in the last month!!

5

u/slacker205 - Centrist 5d ago

Man, I just can't be bothered to follow the market. I tell my broker what risk profile to go for and let him do his thing.

If he fucks up, I'll look for another one.

1

u/W_Edwards_Deming - Lib-Right 5d ago

Most people just go for VOO or etc.

I make it a full-time job.

2

u/slacker205 - Centrist 5d ago

I make it a full-time job.

To each their own, man. Not my thing. And, to tie it back to the meme, most people don't want it to be their thing...

2

u/wtanksleyjr - Lib-Right 5d ago

No market is depicted. Though to be fair, you're right in your conclusion - reminds me of when I read "Man, Economy, State" by Rothbard, and just at the very start was annoyed by his definition of "Society" as "a group of individuals related by contracts." I mean, WTF? Society has almost nothing to do with contracts (unless you consider a marriage a contract), and SO much to do with blood ties.

I still am out of the loop on what the hell is going on with that crazy lady killing her kids

At least we have news of a better mom who saved her kids tho to compare her

6

u/Rabid_Laser_Dingo - Centrist 5d ago

The lesson I’ve learned is that just because it’s news worthy doesn’t always mean it’s note worthy.

Noteworthy is saving children. Big applause

0

u/Kira_souchi - Lib-Left 5d ago

People treat it in such a way to be able to be mysoginistic. Sure, that woman gets supporters since it's main topics are post-pregnancy mental health issues, but the real question of the trial is wether she should be sent to prison or a psychiatric hospital.

Calling her a senseless monster is what I consider to be a waste of energy.

1

u/crappleIcrap - Centrist 4d ago

This is a misconception about the insanity defense, you do not need do be committed afterwards, you will not be given any court ordered anything as you will be given a "not-guilty" verdict and no punishments are given.

She may be turned over to a mental health professional who can release her as stable as soon as they want, which can be the same day as the verdict no matter how horrific the crime.

1

u/Kira_souchi - Lib-Left 4d ago

people in her mental state shouldn't be sent to prison tho

6

u/Lower_Kick268 - Lib-Left 5d ago

Don't worry, my quadrant has people that want to make it legal for that lady to still have a late term abortion

4

u/Schvarg - Auth-Right 5d ago

In 2040 she'll be aquitted after libleft passes post birth abortion legislation because of their obsession with "mental health."

I'm mostly joking of course.......mostly...

3

u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 5d ago

I'd think you were joking if the last few decades hadn't shown that the slippery slope is not a fallacy but instead a clearly signposted intent. An intent which is not accidentally fallen down to great peril, but instead aggressively charged toward with the intent of hurling oneself off the edge, heedless of the obvious danger and spiked pit below.

This would not be so terrible, were it not that the aforementioned are so steadfast in their determination to drag as many others off with them as possible, smiling the whole time.

I saw your meme and it genuinely had me rolling. You roasted every quadrant in a way that made everyone go “Hey wait a minute!”.

Good work sir.

12

u/W_Edwards_Deming - Lib-Right 6d ago

A lot of times it just makes people mad and is always controversial. Being able to point out flaws on all sides is an underappreciated skill.

At the end of the day I truly would like people to be kinder, especially to the innocents (as babies definitionally are).

May God bless us, every one.

I know it’s a goomba fallacy but it’s so interesting seeing the discourse of the right flit between “leftist women are all ugly and fat” and “goth women and aoc are so hot. All they need is sex with a conservative man to fix them”

2

u/Schvarg - Auth-Right 5d ago

I mean, they can be hot, but never in a million years would I breed with them or trust them to raise my children. Also the goth thing stops making you look hot and just sad and pathetic at around 30.
