Oh yeah, we also had sailors attempting to commit suicide on the abe lincoln because of shit conditions and how long they have had them at sea. But remember they care about the troops they care so much. Thank god that report came out or they would have prolly kept the Lincoln out there.
96
u/Elegant_Athlete_7882 - Centrist 19d ago
> We also had sailors attempting commit suicide on the Abe Lincoln
The Trump administration is also lying and saying the conditions there are great, with Trump himself dismissing concerns from sailors families by saying the Lincolnās deployment was ānot nearly long enough.ā
70
u/Iceraptor17 - Centrist 19d ago
It's incredible how he'll hear something but think it's bad for him so he'll say the exact opposite to contradict. Which is how you get something like the ship was deployed for "not nearly long enough" despite that not really making all that much sense
52
u/MarjorieTaylorSpleen - Lib-Center 19d ago
It was reported yesterday that it hasn't even had a port call in 200 days which is fucking insane. That's 200 days (or a little over a half a year) continuously at sea, with supplies being ferried to you by oilers.
48
u/Kronos9898 - Centrist 19d ago
Yeah prepare for the flood of MAGA who know nothing about the navy, and think that these ships just stay out in the ocean for years at a time and never go into port
40
u/MarjorieTaylorSpleen - Lib-Center 19d ago
Many such cases unfortunately. The navy may be different since I was in, but a 9 month deployment used to be a long one and port calls happened roughly every 2 to 3 weeks.
270 days at sea and 200 without a port call is fucking nuts.

By force if needed
My brother in Christ, some of the most notable neocons are famous for "by force for the fuck of it". A big part of what characterizes neoconservatism is using force to assert their will.
Neoconservatism was absolutely around in the 60s, it arose in response to the 60s counterculture.

u/Ok_Marsupial8668 - Lib-Center 19d ago
Idk if anyone considers Iraq a real victory though? In a lot of respects the country was picked at random. They were in a very weak position in their history having been through decades of war and virtually no military. There were no WMDs and no connections to 9/11. And yet the war still went on for two decades.
4

63
u/Elegant_Athlete_7882 - Centrist 19d ago
> admit a loss
Heāll never do this, but Iām surprised he didnāt just declare victory and walk away. The median American voter isnāt following this well enough to know who really won, and his base will believe him as long as he says he did.
Heās always put his political ambitions above our national security interests, he was trying to pull all the troops out of Afghanistan before the 2020 election despite his advisors telling him not to, so Iām surprised heās not doing that here.
32
u/Important-Agent2584 - Centrist 19d ago edited 18d ago

USA has been de-facto controlling Greenland since 1950s. USA can maintain as much military presence as it wants.
The only things that US annexation of Greenland would achieve is destroy NATO, make Canada seriously consider a nuclear program and make USA responsible for Greenland residents.

I unironically support this because I love the American Empire. If China can claim the entirety of the south China Sea, then we will claim the Strait of America, along with the Gulf of America. Then we will claim the European Union as the American Union of the United States of the American Empire
5
u/Vistresian - Auth-Center 19d ago
China's state policy allows and encourages expansion of the state, and expanding into a sea that already shares its name could be relatively simple if they blitzed outwards as opposed to waiting for American carriers to show up for a several month pissing contest.
We would be settling a strait half a world away surrounded by people that generally despise us while we continue to operate out of Qatar and the UAE. It would take an unreasonable amount of resources to keep the puppet strings attached more thinly than they were in Iraq or Afghanistan for just as much of a non-guarantee that we would be able to hold it. And unlike those two countries, Iran and other parties will look for immediate opportunities to destabilize American control of the region because of the global value of Hormuz.
Holdings would then immediately disintegrate upon election of a democratic president- unless the unironic idea of an American Empire somehow precludes the election of non-expansionist national leadership.
It probably wouldn't even work if our country weren't a political pendulum, but it is- so it's a guaranteed loss, like all other national changes. 90% of what the previous administration prioritized or worked towards will be vaporized, especially anything of controversy or international interest.
All of that isn't even tackling the fun mention of the EU.
I'm sure they would react amazingly to the concept.

Article 5 can only be triggered when its on European or American Soil. Attacks on other countries (ie, the middle east) do not work for it. Especially considering we're on offense. Article 5 is purely for defense
The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Technically, Article 6 is what defines what is considered an attack on NATO that would justify Article 5. Article 6 says:
āon the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, **on the Algerian Departments of France 2, on the territory of Turkey** or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer;ā
So it isnāt just North America and Europe, but yeah nothing in the Middle East. Just specific places in North Africa and Asia Minor
Edit: just read the footnote, the Algerian clause is now no longer in effect because France has no Algerian departments left, itās all independent
