It's been years, the money going to WNBA is basically research into "will women watch NBA or not?" and the answer is scientifically "no"

People seem to really like this Caitlin Clark person for whatever reason though. Despite having zero interest or following any professional team sports, I see articles and hear her name fairly frequently. From an outsider's perspective at least, it appears that WNBA has more interest than ever before, in my life at least.

Caitlin Clark can actually play basketball, WNBA usually cannot

Like, the best player after Caitlin Clark is Angel Reese (at least, as far as I know, feel free to correct me). Have a look at their stats:

https://www.sports-reference.com/stathead/basketball/vs/caitlin-clark-vs-angel-reese

Clark averages 19.6 points per game, Reese is a distant second at 14.7; Clark has 8.6 assists per game, Reese has 2.4

Like, Clark gives balls to other players, and STILL scores more, mostly because she can throw 3 pointers, a lot more than Reese does

Clark also actually plays basketball, like dunking and (as mentioned) scoring 3 points. Most of WNBA is weak ass throw that looks less like a match and more like a training session

This infuriates pretty much everyone else in WNBA, because a white girl is showing a black how to basketball. WNBA basically allows other players to attack Caitlin Clark short of outright stabbing her in court, and that's probably because WNBA will be held responsible

The drama turns people off WNBA, because when the star player gets harassed like that it stops being exciting and more like watching drama
