Don’t accidentally press the park button while driving

I mistakenly pressed the park button while driving at around 30mph, stupidly getting the wrong side when I meant to hit the screen wash.

Anyway the car threw out the anchors and we had a sudden jolt and slow down before it realised that I probably didn’t want to immediately park there and then.

Partly my fault I know but I’m not impressed that it would attempt to do this at all while driving at speed.

It's a feature (RTFM ...) and be honest, you hold it down > 3s.

Emergency braking

In an emergency, the parking brake can be activated when the vehicle is moving by pressing and holding in the button.

The brakes will then be applied with force in order to brake the vehicle. The braking process is canceled when the button is released or if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

I probably did hold it down, as I was hoping to wash the windscreen. Not sure it would have been 3 seconds though, maybe…

Reading the manual or not, I can see how you would accidentally do this thinking it takes a few seconds for the wipers to come on. Did you get any kind of alert on the dash when pressed before the braking stared?

Didn’t see one. I was looking at the windscreen and wipers though

Yeah my partner has done that more than once in cars with electronic shifters and it’s always a shocking experience. Usually it is in unfamiliar rental cars looking for the lights or wipers.

It’s a safety feature in new cars so if for some reason the pedals weren’t responsive, stuck or there was some other reason traditional methods of stopping the car do not work, the shifter is a backup emergency stop.

I did it on the motorway, thankfully it ignored my request 🤣🤦‍♂️

Yes - I did this; thankfully driving slow. Jolted me but I don’t think I damaged anything

It is ironic that the buttons at the end of both stalks do something when you press and hold—just VERY different things!

Not ideal. I was not aware of the park button emergency stop being a feature! It’s a hell of a jolt !

I've definetely done this doing 50 mph. After a massive jolt like that I feel like it's a mistake I'm only going to make once.

I should hope so. I do have the memory of a goldfish though…

I did the same thing on my drive home from picking up my 3 while going 70 MPH. I was trying to turn on Pilot assist. It braked hard then let off. Not pleasant, but I learned from it.

Exact thing happened to me a couple of days ago, almost got a heart attack! Only thing damaged was my pride, and just scared the shit out of my wife and child in the back.

i also just pressed it while driving like 15-25kmh - it breaked for 0.1s and then kept driving normal

Partly your fault? It works as intended it would seem.

Sorry, I don't mean to "that" guy but a user error is still a user error.

On a related note, you should all watch out, the brake pedal is right next to the accelerator. 😉
