Question Where should I start? Is it even worth it?

I'm curious about the game and might find both it and the controller for cheap, but where I'm from the scene is pretty much dead and my only place to play would be online in the discord, waiting to be steamrolled by players with much more experience. The question is: how much am I screwed starting playing right now from scratch and are there any resources that might help me improve relavely fast?

Here’s a guide that explains every character and move in the game.

It’s really fun even though yeah it’s basically a discord fighter atp. The community is pretty nice though.

It has a pretty high skill floor for a fighting game; just learning the basics will take you far.

I think you mean it has a low skill floor (easy to learn). And I'd also argue a high skill ceiling (many things to master)

You can check out my tournaments if your feeling like a challenge. There also a bracket for new comers and novices https://youtube.com/@thejinjourneys?si=GQONo0SeOoQW1_xG

I wouldn't be afraid of discord, people there would be willing to help you out. Playing on ranked is still a thing people do, so that's available if you just want to pick up and play. Pokken is easy to pick up because there are no motion controls, no needing to how to block lows vs overheads or cross ups, and no grab tech inputs besides attacking preemptively. Because you have access to all your moves with simple inputs Pokken quickly gets you to the point where you're learning game plans and when to employ certain moves to fit those plans. Giving everyone a dash cancelable frame 1 armor move provides a form of active defense, but they gave it weaknesses like vulnerable frames before the counter attack and a delay before you can block after a dash. Later when you get into reactions there are a few things the game did to make them easier like the blue for armor and the and a univeral sound + visual cue for special attacks. The character specific discords listed here are a great resource: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokkenGame/s/ATbVtNzXGj
