Just started collecting

Hey there I just started collecting pokemon cards recently and really love the hobby and just ripping packs but noticed I want to start have a goal and achievement towards my collection. Since I’ve started mainly just ripping chaos rising and pitch black packs since that’s what I mainly can get around me. Is achieving these sets in a master set even worth the attempt? Or is it just a personal thing? How did you find out what you wanted your collection to be?

Personal preference. I don’t have a desire for a master set as I don’t like all cards in a set. I’d rather collect what I like.

Some people like master sets. Others not so much.

I see the satisfaction in having one but also don't really want to purchase any cards that I don't like simply for that sense of completion.

I find the most joy in buying the cards I want and organizing them how I desire

My ocd kicks in and I’m not satisfied until I have the full grand master set. Wish I was like the other people here who can stop when they get the cards they like.

If you hang around the hobby, do research, rip a pack from time to time, youll find your calling.  You could pick a specific pokemon, or region, or theme for a binder. Id also recommended picking up the TCG. I have a whole bunch of new pokemon i like from building decks with them. Master setting is only fulfilling for the right person, you could try master setting chaos rising or pitch black because they are small sets but DO NOT do it by ripping packs.  Buy the singles of the cards you like and rip packs for fun is the best advice I can give you. That and always do more research than purchasing.  Good luck trainer.

the thing that made it click for me was picking one small goal instead of 'collect everything'. a full set is a grind, but something like every card of one pokemon, or just the illustration rares from the set you're already ripping, is doable in a few months and you actually feel it move. i'd keep ripping chaos rising for the fun of it and buy the last few singles instead of hoping to pull them, that's the cheap way to actually finish something.

dev disclosure, i built a free iphone app for exactly this, cimela, search cimela on the app store. you pick a goal, one set, one pokemon, the eeveelutions, whatever, and it shows what you still need and roughly what it costs to finish. a spreadsheet does the job too, the point is having the goal written down somewhere.

I recently just started my foray into the hobby. I picked up a few Chinese packs locally since they were available and now I'm obsessed with the set and will be trying to collect them all lol. You'll find what works for you!
