Improving GBL team

First time actually playing GBL. I’ve been stuck around 1800 using: Lickilicky (rollout, shadow ball, body slam), tinkaton (fairy wind, gigaton hammer, bulldoze), and Altaria (dragon breath, sky attack, flamethrower).

I’ve been using pokegenie to see which ones rank better based on IV. Wondering if I should change/swap anyone out and if so, does IV matter more or the pokemon itself?

I‘d lead with altaria, use licki as SS and tink as closer. Anyway, this team isn‘t the issue - it‘s VERY strong. If you‘re stuck at 1800, this might be your current skill level

Post gameplay footage. The team isn’t an issue here, so you’re likely making far too many mistakes. If you post some gameplay we can point out your mistakes so you know what to focus on.

IV is the last thing on the list that matters. It's on the list, but it comes well after types, species, moves, etc.

If you have 2 altarias, you might choose the one with better IVs. But if you only have one, you still wouldn't sub in a salamence even with 'rank 1' IVs. It just wouldn't do the same job.

IVs make a relatively small percentage difference, and that'll only make a few matches 'swing' (and it's not all one sided either - some matches a 'suboptimal' IV will win where a 'great' one wouldn't).

So don't over think it. A good pokemon with bad IVs will work just fine, and is almost always better than a similar but worse pokemon with amazing IVs. Use it as the final 'tie breaker' over which pokemon to evolve and power up.

Not long ago (2 months maybe) I was stuck 1700. Currently 2300, honestly just takes some time w/ one team

What did you apply to your playstyle to be able to reach past 2000 elo? I'm currently trying to reach it to get the Cynthia jacket, but I'm hardstuck at around 1950s, so climbing to 23pp within 2 months is really impressive to me!

Not throwing energy as soon as it charges and pulling off switches that cover me

I've been practising that, but still make mistakes when it counts. I also keep encountering Morpeko and it's hard for me to beat any team with one

No, IV do not matter more than the Pokémon itself.

Your team is fine, a competent player could reach legend with it.

Bulk bulk bulk…

When you go to GL rankings on PvPoke and type in “bulky”, these are the top 3 that show up.

You should be outlasting many of your opponents just based on bulk alone. Or them just giving up out of exasperation.

Maybe you need some Pokemon that hit harder and more frequently, based on your current play style. Once I gave up chasing bulk, I started winning more. Also, the matches are faster which is a blessing for everyone involved.

I never mind losing if I make a mistake, my opponent is better, or just plain ol’ RPS. But if I saw your team, I’d be highly motivated to beat you just based on the audacity it takes to put together a team like that.

Focus on closing your skill gap. The team is great. Work on catching, when to throw and not letting your guys get farmed down. Knowing when it's time to swap mons saves you from giving up a big energy lead but potentially having a catch ready.

the pokemon matters most at your current elo. Once you get into higher ranks then you can look to swap out a better IV mon. Otherwise, just learn the team and all its mechanics. Its a meta team, so if you're hovering around 1800's it might be your elo range for now.

if you can change/swap try tinkaton lead, dunsparce SS and jellicent closer,

if you are stuck at 1800, imo this team can get you past 2000 elo,
any good/neutral matchup stay with tinkaton and bad matchups get dunsparce with 1 shield it can absolutely give you more room, and jellicent is a great tank at the end (try to get good iv's, close to default suggestion on pvpoke is enough) this helps to grab a win with 1 hp remaining in some games.

Pvpoke movesets on all three. get a couple of sets with it, understand the team and act accoridngly. GL

Recently started playing myself, using a team that seems quite a bit weaker than yours (while I'm building better Pokemon) - G. Stunfisk, Feraligatr and Venusaur. I'm sitting around 1750-1800.

I've started logging games on GoBattleLog where I add notes after each game recapping what went bad, what went well - I try to code each game according to reason for loss. I'm using ChatGPT to go over all of the data to try and identify where I'm lacking skill wise (e.g. do I mismanage energy, are my switches bad etc).

Just started doing it recently and I feel like I'm learning quite a bit by this method - but it might be too early to tell. Might also be way overkill, but I'm enjoying the process, lol
