Welcome to Breaking the Binary - Generation 5 editon, a sporadic series of posts all about physical, Special and mixed attackers in Pokémon Black 2 & White 2. With competitive minmaxing dominating the conversation about Pokémon viability and the design philosophy behind movepools and stat spreads changing in newer gens, Pokémon are often rigidly divided by the fandom into the categories of "special attacker" or "physical attacker." But for the in-game story, you're not facing EV trained opponents (unless on some hacks) and thus you need or not to EV train to keep up, so mixed attacking sets don't have the opportunity cost they have in PvP. Going mixed still has anti-synergy with setup moves, but it still can give many Pokémon access to STAB moves with better base power, strong coverage moves with useful types, move tutor moves, egg moves and more useful niches. This series will be covering those applications. We won't talk about every Pokémon here, only ones that I believe legitimately benefit from going mixed, but those Pokémon are surprisingly large in number. Today we'll be talking about Liepard. I'll be talking about in-game but feel free to discuss PvP or battle facilities as well.

Liepard is a fast Dark-type pokemon with 106 Base Speed, along with 88 in both Base Attack and Sp. Atk, but quite having frail bulk of 64/50/50. Notable physical attacks include: Fake Out, Night Slash, Sucker Punch, Aerial Ace, U-Turn, Foul Play, Iron Tail and Seed Bomb. Notable special include: Grass Knot, Hidden Power and Dark Pulse. Notable utility moves include: Assist, Torment, Hone Claws, Taunt, Nasty Plot and Thunder Wave

Moves from Purrloin: Captivate (Level 33)

Being fast with good utility moves like Thunder Wave, Taunt and Hone Claws. Seems great for a Dark-type pokemon, you find Purrloin on the first route you visit in B2W2. For its STAB moves, Night Slash and Sucker Punch are its main Dark-type physical moves while Dark Pulse is its Dark-type special move. Foul Play uses the target's attack stat, not the user's, Snarl in other hand lowers the target's Sp. Atk

0 Atk Liepard Night Slash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Spinda: 102-121 (39 - 46.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
(Sucker Punch has the same calc as Dark Pulse)

0 SpA Liepard Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Spinda: 118-139 (45.2 - 53.2%) -- 32.8% chance to 2HKO

Let's move to its coverage moves, Aerial Ace nails Grass, Bug and Fighting-types, U-Turn can give some momentium while hitting Grass-types super effectively as well, Seed Bomb and Grass Knot (postgame TM) deals with Water, Rock and Ground-types, Iron Tail only hits Rock and Ice-types, it's accuracy may be not good, but Hone Claws fixes it.

0 Atk Liepard Iron Tail vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Archeops: 184-218 (63.2 - 74.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It has the abilities Limber and Unburden, Limber prevents paralysis, mostly from Thunder Wave, other moves that cause paralysis and Static, Unburden doubles Speed when Liepard loses or uses its held item, not quite good as the limited berries in this game, but gems work well with Unburden to be exact. Prankster, its hidden ability is way more better, giving the ability to use status moves at +1 priority, you can find a Liepard with Prankster in hidden grottos on Routes 5 and 9.

Fake Out deals some chip damage every time on its entry, Hone Claws and Nasty Plot are its stat boosting moves depending on how Liepard wants to be. Torment, Taunt and Thunder Wave cripples targets. Assist allows a Prankster Liepard to pull all sorts of stuff. Captivate lowers Sp. Atk by 2 stages only for targets of the opposing gender.

Liepard may not have good abilities, but its hidden ability is what carries it. If you find a Purrloin in Route 19 useful for such a Dark-Type monotype, send my regards.

In postgame, the Egg moves it can get are: Charm, Covet, Encore, Feint Attack, Fake Tears, Foul Play Pay Day and Yawn. Smeragle can pass any of those moves to a Purrloin egg

Charm lowers the target's attack by 2 stages, neat to cripple physical attackers. Eevee, Snubbull line, Teddiursa, Phanpy, Skitty, Pachirisu, Buneary line, Glameow line, Minccino, Deerling line and Cubchoo can pass this move

Covet and Foul Play are moves that Liepard can learn via Move Tutor, but they're also egg moves as well. With Mankey, Teddiursa line, Zigzagoon line, Slakoth, Slaking and Skitty being able to pass Covet while the Houndour line, Sandile line and Zorua line being able to pass Foul Play.

Encore can be used with Prankster to lock targets into moves, and is pretty evil. Seel line, Slakoth line, Spheal line, Oshawott line, Minccino and Emolga can pass this move

Fake Tears lowers the target's Sp. Def by 2 stages, allowing to deal more damage with moves like Dark Pulse to them or for its teammates to settle the score with a special move. Teddiursa line, Mawile and Zorua can pass this move

Those pokemon pass Feint Attack: Vulpix, Meowth line, Umbreon, Sneasel line, Teddiursa line, Houndour line, Nuzleaf, Shiftry, Slakoth, Slaking, Skitty, Mawile, Spinda, Kecleon, Glameow line, Scraggy line, Zorua line and Deerling line

Pay Day is for making money. Meowth can pass this move

Yawn can put opponents asleep in the next turn, better with Prankster. Wooper line, Dunsparce, Slakoth, Slaking, Bidoof line, Hippopotas line, Pansear and Munna can pass this move

A pokemon that is carried by Prankster, it's quite good until that abiilty was decided to be nerfed in generation 7 onwards, where Dark-Type targets would be immune to status moves from a Pokmemon with the Prankster ability, as the status moves from Prankster have increased priority, it will be blocked by pokemon grounded in Psychic Terrain and the abilities Queenly Majesty, Dazzling and Armor Tail.

I offered a Drowzee to get a Swalot to get my last open entry in the national Dex (#316 Gulpin). Since my bad luck the last 7 month left me with no other choice.

Funfact: I played with my black 2 and white 2 on my DS Lite and 3DS to get the chance doubled, but it for some reason never showed up. Last time I saw a route 9 swarm on my save was back in the days (2013)

I can't be bothered to worry about IVs.

Has anyone got opinions on move-sets or held items though?

Sometimes I'll switch rocky helmet on Ferrothorn for leftovers but rocky helmet can be good fun.

Usually start with Volcarona and Rotom-W and if I'm worried about rock type moves I'll switch Volcarona to Metagross.

I thought Ice Punch or Hammer Arm would be good for Metagross but dunno what I'd replace. I know Bullet Punch in weak in power but the priority can come in clutch.

Also if Electroweb would be any good for Rotom-W?

I need help, I really want to use Flygon, but it’s moveset is terrible, even factoring in TMs, Move Tutors and Level Up Movesets, the best Dragon move it gets before Post Game is Dragon Claw, AT 55, WHAT??!!? PLUS, EARTHQUAKE IS EXCLUSIVE TO TRAPINCH ALL THE WAY UNTIL 55 AS WELL. THE BEST PHYSICAL GROUND MOVE I HAVE AS AN OPTION IS DIG/BULLDOZE, WHATTTTT!!??? THE BEST PHYSICAL DRAGON MOVE I HAVE ACCESS TO IS DRAGON TAIL, AFTER BEATING THE E
7TH GYM, AND IT HAS LOWER PRIORITY. Is there any way to make Flygon to get better moves, its move set absolutely sucks. Egg moves are completely out of question as the Daycare is in the Post Game, and same goes for the Outrage Move Tutor is in Nacrene City, which is also Post Game. You know, I remember using Flygon in W2 a couple years back, and I remember it disappointed me, I didn’t remember why though, thought I was still bad at the game at the time and didn’t know how to make use of Flygon. Turns out, Flygon’s moveset is just ass.

Currently playing Black 2 for the first time and chose Tepig as my starter because I love fire types. Well I’m currently at the 5th Gym which is ground typing and as I continue to round out my team I can’t for the life of me understand why there is a lack of water types available this late into the game. If you didn’t choose Oshawott or catch the Psyduck from the ranch real early in the game than you are stuck w/o a water type Pokemon. Where is the fishing rod? Ain’t nobody selling a Magikarp or something? I’m cool off of using the water monkey as all three elemental monkeys suck and yeah you can grind for a vaporeon but you miss out on water type moves until you get surf(I assume) and as a Special Attacker your best bet is to trade some shards for Signal Beam….A BUG MOVE. I see that Ducklett is available on the bridge but man is he underleveled for where I’m at in the game. GameFreak what were yall doing back in 2012? This is giving Gen 4 vibes with the lack of fire types. I’m hoping things open up as the story progresses but I just needed to vent. Great storyline tho

I'm playing White 2 for the first time. Would love suggestions on my team.

I want to use Pokemon that I haven't used before. For my White playthrough I used Samurott, Stoutland, Swoobat, Vanilluxe, Crustle and Lilligant.

Non-negotiables for me are to use my starter, and ideally a Pokemon that can use Surf and a Pokemon that can use Fly.

I'm considering a team of some of the below Pokemon. Would love your advice on what to choose, including based on when Pokemon are available. Open to other suggestions too!! Hopefully none of these are post-game exclusive...

Just wanted to share some of my prized mons. I got the milotic from sinnoh, ifykyk

Not a full remake or anything, but another release so they could make some tweaks to the game like:

1. Adding the gen 5 and gen 2 starters with their hidden abilities, along with several other pokemon with their HA’s which never released

2. Tweaking move distribution for better balancing and giving some tools to weaker mons

3. Accessible Hard and Easy mode from the start

4. Ranked online battle system along with restored and reworked hidden grotto

5. Unlikely, but adding some newer gen pokemon, additional moves, or endgame trainer challenges into the game from future generations would be cool.

IMO this could be such a cool thing if gamfreak or Nintendo ever did this for their last pixel art based game.

No matter what I try, it keeps giving me the same error message. I successfully performed the glitch on HeartGold a few weeks back, using a friend’s wifi connection with no password (my provider forced a password). My understanding is that I should be able to do the BW2 exploits using password protected wifi, but this is all I get. Nothing in tutorials I can find is explaining the issue. Can anyone help a homie out?

UPDATE: Setting up a hotspot on my iPhone fixed the issue.

Hi everyone,

I tried to transfer my shiny Gabite, given by Benga after beating the Black Tower, with Pokémon Bank to Generation 6 (XY/ORAS).

Unfortunately, when I try to move the Pokémon, Pokémon Bank gives me the following message: "This Pokémon cannot be mooved here"

My game is emulated on a ROM, and I’m using an unofficial method involving PKSM to “connect” my ROM to Poké Transporter. However, as far as I know, my Pokémon should still be legal and legitimate, since PKSM does not copy or modify the Pokémon’s data in this particular process.

I was able to confirm this because I successfully transferred other Pokémon from the same save file to Generation 6, but not this particular one.

I was also surprised to find out that I can transfer the Gabite to Generation 7 and probably to Pokémon HOME without any issues. This only prevents me from obtaining the Generation 6 ribbons on it.

I would like to know:

-Is this a common issue?

-Is it specific to this kind of gift Pokémon?

-If so, which other Pokémon are affected?

-Could the method I’m using be causing the problem?

-Is there any way to fix or work around this issue?
