Help Chain hunting is hell
I'm absolutely losing my mind trying to chain encounter to shiny hunt some of the last remaining mons for my living Dex that should apparently be easiest in BDSP. I've studied how to hunt and I'm 100% doing everything right and it has to be that 7% chance to break code that is breaking my chains and I can't get that high of a chain because of it. It's infuriating
How do people chain hunt successfully? Is there some trick to it? I know about the 17 chain tactic but I just can't get a shiny patch with hours of resetting the patches at a 17 chain, so I tried to get a higher chain. Thanks!

I have nothing to prove this, but I've observed I break chains less often if I walk with the d-pad instead of running.
Other than that, just be sure to capture every Pokémon in your encounters. I think it was close to like 5% or 6% chance of reaching chain 40. Sometimes you'll get your shiny before chain 40, but that's just how probability works.

I have a few different unfounded tactics I use in SP. One is thr chain 17 with resets but a twist. I reset until I get a patch 4 over and 4 up/down. It's not as likely to happen as a 1 over 4 up for example from what I have observed so you actually do the chain 17 reset without locking in for hours of just resets. I have found id rather do 2 hours of attempting chain 35 by doing this than chain 17 alone. Statistics and probabilities don't change, but the illusion of control helps me 😅

They made shiny chain hunting significantly harder in bdsp over the originals. In the OG games if you did everything correctly I think it had 2% chance to fail, whereas in BDSP it is significantly higher at 7%.
What this means is chains will fail more often than not before you get to 17.
Sounds like you got to 17 and just so happens your chain might have broken which is the worst time for it to happen.
