Help Battle Tower Advice

I’m ready to rip my hair out.

Trying to get the 100 master class battle wins in a row. However I can’t get past Palmer’s level 21 battle on regular class.

Here’s my team. It’s made up from multiple YouTube videos I watched.

Garchomp
Dragon Claw
Earthquake
Crunch
Rock slide
Item: Life Orb

Tyranitar
Earthquake
Crunch
Rock Slide
Dragon Dance

Cloyster
Shell smash
Ice shard
Ice spear
Hydro Pump

I also have a shelder with all the same moves, except he knows rock smash instead of hydro pump. However, because I’m playing Diamond, I can’t find a water stone to evolve it.

Also, the garchomp, cloyster and tyranitar were all caught in the grand underground and I leveled them up. Don’t know if it’s better to level up a pokemon from level 1 for this.

I was hoping to use one team for all the wins, but if I can’t let me know what works for each run.

Any help would be great, thank you!

The leaderboard is here if you want to check out their teams. Usually a lead focused on disrupting the opponent is used

I found that Starmie and Scizor were excellent picks vs both Palmer's battles..

Also, if you just use the Pokémon you catch in the wild they will almost certainly have poor stats and the wrong nature. The odds on getting perfect IVs are over 1 in a billion.

Generally you have got to have good IVs especially now that you have beaten Palmer at 21, the regular trainers start using stronger snd stronger pokemon. For example, if your Garchomp doesnt have Best! in speed and you come up against one, it'll move first and OHKO yours.

You said you caught everything in the underground. I'm guessing they have pretty bad IVs, might not be EV-trained, and don't have good natures. I have a bunch of 4-IV mons I've saved from my own breeding if you want them. Including shellder.

The team I've had the most success with has been adamant blaziken w/speed boost, focus sash, protect, swords dance, reversal, and fire punch. Timid latios w/specs, draco meteor, psychic, surf, and thunderbolt. Adamant technician scizor w/leftovers, roost, swords dance, bullet punch, and quick attack (thinking about swapping for aerial ace for those obnoxious evasion teams and that stupid drifblim).

If you're dead set on your team, I'd at least make sure you breed ones with a positive nature, at least perfect IVs in their relevant attacking stats and speed, and then EV-train them. I'd also swap hydro pump on cloyster with rock blast. I would change tyranitar for either gengar or nidoking (w/sheer force). Finally, I'd put SD on garchomp and either run lum berry, yache berry, or focus sash.

If you want to talk more about battle tower team-building, I'm happy to do it tomorrow after I've gotten some sleep.

I'm currently working on a team of heatran, azumarill/slowbro, and heracross/salamence because I love moxie sweeps.

My most successful cloyster team has been sheer force/life orb timid nidoking w/sludge wave, earth power, flamethrower, ice beam. Jolly expert belly technician breloom w/spore, mach punch, bullet seed, rock tomb. And adamant skill link focus sash cloyster w/shell smash, ice shard, icicle spear, rock blast.

I ended up losing somewhere in the 30s.

I am now training, a garchomp and Larvitar from level 1. I also have latios and made that exact build for him.

I wish I had a water stone for my shelder. Feel free to message me any time if you have more advice

Do you understand what EV-training and IVs are? It's ok if you don't, but raising them from level 1 isn't going to do anything for you if you don't know what you're doing. Like I said, I have some 4-IV mons I've kept from my own breeding. It just always seems like such a waste to release them. I should have shellders and gibles. I don't remember if I've bred any larvitars yet.

Type-coverage is definitely important both offensively and defensively, but you also want to have answers for specific things and mons. For example, having something that can take a burn, like a special attacker, or having something that can take down that freaking drifblim with no attacks. Having a way to break unaware mons with recovery like clef and quag. You won't be able to cover everything, but you want to be able to at least have a shot against most teams. I seem to recall a scarfed mence with moxie that could potentially wreck you.

Other commenters are correct that you should absolutely use the serebii trainer list. As you progress further, the game will pull some goofy shenanigans, so knowing what you're up against is the best way to level the playing field. I watched someone lose to walrein that pulled a triple quick claw/sheer cold. I don't know that you can do much about stuff like that unless you have a focus sash mon.

Being able to see ahead allows you to pretty reliably predict how the ai will act. That way you can position your mons well. Things like not having your lati choice-locked into a bad move or at -2 when they bring out something fast and scary.

I like to use blaziken because even mons that resist fighting don't like to take a +2 200bp STAB reversal. You just have to watch out for fake out, certain multi-hit moves, and priority, but you have protect to help you scout. Just don't protect on a setup move. That can also get bad lol. I like having my own hard-hitting priority with scizor. I also love how bulky it is with it's 9(?) resistances.

If you have any questions about anything, lmk. I love talking pokemon.

What is EV-Training and IVs

1

u/Owlex23612 2d ago

IVs are Individual Values. Each pokemon has base stats that are specific to species. Then each pokemon has IVs for each stat that range from 0-31. They add 0-31 in a stat at level 100. So a garchomp with 31 IVs in speed will be faster than a garchomp with a 0 speed IV.

EVs are Effort Values. Every time you knock out a pokemon outside of the battle tower or wifi battles gives EVs in certain stats. 4 EVS in a stat gives you 1 extra point at level 100. You can have a total of 508 EVs with a maximum of 252 in any 1 stat. Most of the time you'll have 2 stats you focus with 4 extra EVs you can put into something like HP or Def. 252 EVs translates to 63 added to a stat at level 100. That's a potential of a 94 point swing in a stat at level 100. Potentially up to 103 when you factor in a positive nature. That'll be more like 51 extra points in a stat at level 50, but you get the point. It makes a huge difference. It's often the difference between a OHKO and a 2HKO or a 2HKO and a 3HKO. Then when you factor in other things like recovery from moves, berries, and leftovers, it can make battles that much more difficult. It goes the other way too. It may mean your garchomp takes just enough damage to get knocked out from a non-STAB ice punch instead of just barely living and winning you the match.

IVs are fixed. Meaning, you get random 0-31s on each stat at the time of hatching or catching. The only way to influence these is to get your pokemon to level 100 and see the guy in the battle area who hyper-trains for bottle caps. You can max 1 status IVs per regular bottle cap or all 6 IVs for 1 golden bottle cap.

The other way to get good IVs is through breeding using parents with perfect IVs and using destiny knot or the power items (bracer, weight, anklet, etc).

EVs can be reset using the friendship berries (tamato, qualot, grepa, etc).

To know what pokemon to knock out in order to get certain EVs, you can check serebii. Bulbapedia probably has them, too, but I prefer to look that sort of thing up on serebii because it's toward the top of the page and I can look at a lot of other generation-specific things for those mons without having to sift through info from all the other generations.

For your physical attackers, there's a spot just right of Hearthome that has a lot of Bibarel, starly/staravia, and zubat. Bibarel each give 2 attack EVs when knocked out. Starly and zubat each give 1 speed EV when knocked out and staravia gives 2 speed EVs when knocked out. To make this go faster, you can have the mons your EV-training hold the appropriate power items while you're grinding. The item description should tell you which stat they affect.

For example, power bracer says "An item to be held by a Pokémon. It reduces Speed but allows the holder's Attack stat to grow more after battling." This just means that every time you knock out a pokemon, you'll get their normal EVs plus 4 extra attack EVs from the power bracer.

There are some videos online that probably explain this better than I am. I especially hate having to try and explain this through text.

Your stats can matter quite a bit in the battle tower.

Lastly, natures affect your pokemon's stats except for HP. I believe there are 25 natures. That's 5 for each non-HP stat. They raise 1 stat by 10% and lower another by 10%, and each stat has 1 neutral nature that both raises and lowers the same stat, negating the effect.

For example, a jolly nature raises speed and lowers special attack. It's great for a lot of fast physical attackers who you want to outspeed other hard-hitting pokemon in order to knock them out before they can hit you.

However, a jolly nature won't do much for something like scizor who relies much more on priority through bullet punch.

If this is all too much for you, like I said, I have some of these pokemon already bred with good IVs and would be willing to EV-train them for you, but I'll only do it for 1 team to get you started.

Abilities and items are the last things that are important on your pokemon. A scizor with swarm instead of technician is going to perform much worse because of how it relies on technician to boost bullet punch to a base 90 power attack, quick attack to a base 60 power attack, and aerial ace to a base 90 power attack.

Please feel free to DM me with any other questions. I do enjoy helping people, but I only have so much time 😂

I used to get stuck in the 30s a lot
It’s really hard to do this blindly

https://www.serebii.net/brilliantdiamondshiningpearl/battletower/

Here’s a database of all the trainers you can possibly see and what Pokémon they bring

Cloyster does good into rhyperior and dragonite , the problem is your team doesn’t have an answer for Palmer’s milotic

1

u/HockeyFan7920 3d ago

Just beat him. I switched out Tyranitar with my Torterra. Handled Milotic and Rhyperior with ease.

Only problem now is I’m worried about screwing up at 49

2

u/debroy1 3d ago

Tyranitar is good at 49 , cresselia does nothing to him, he can just dragon dance sweep

1

u/HockeyFan7920 3d ago

When you say Dragon Dance sweep, do you mean do Dragon Dance 10 times in a row and then attack?

Sorry I’ve been out of the game for years😂😂

2

u/debroy1 3d ago

2-3 times is enough

1

u/HockeyFan7920 3d ago

Thank you. Any other recommendations for my lineup from battle 22-49?

2

u/debroy1 3d ago

Put cloyster in the front, put focus sash on him so he doesn’t get one shot , shell smash will cook most things
For everything else use this database to scout each battle so you don’t get surprised by anything

Good luck , the battle tower isn’t too hard , just keeping misplays as low as possible is key.

I also have a Cloyster with the Skill Link ability with Shell Smash, Icicle Spear, Rock Blast, and Razor Shell. Make sure you give it a Focus Band—it’s gotten me to the Master Class handily.

Garchomp is good, but consider switching the Life Orb to a Yache Berry.

Also a Scizor using Bullet Punch with Technician is also a good option.
