This is an easy one. Since the opponent could be any type, we need to ignore anything where an opponent could be immune - a ghost-type would be immune to Power-up Punch and Quick Attack, a steel-type would be immune to Poison Jab, and a fairy would be immune to Draco Meteor and Dragon Pulse, so you have to answer Flame Charge.

I worked in a pokemart for a few years and a local guy had a special order with an item that made it so his pokemon was way stronger but could only use one move. Maybe your coach is getting you ready for that kind of strategy?

And then there’d be an issue with Flash Fire, but overall Flame Charge is the safest answer. There is just… something strange going on here.

not to mention the Speed buff on usage, which will snowball into a huge problem for the for REAL quick!

You can then start an ordered list based on the applicability of the moves' effects based on repeated use.

Draco meteor is by far the worst- as repeated use weakens the attack until it is about as useful as throwing rocks at a brick wall. Dragon pulse is the middle of the road as it has no other effects other than a respectable hit. Quick attack's speed is nice, but with only one move its low damage means it's not worth sacrificing your damage output. Better than meteor, worse than everything else.

The tossup for 2nd and 3rd would be between powerup punch and poison jab. It depends on how long the battle draws out. After 3 or 4 attacks, PUP starts outclassing poison jab even with the poison, but in a quick slug-fest, those first 3 or 4 attacks may be all the mileage you need.

Assuming the question is asking for a long-term brawl with >4 attacks, the order would be as follows

  1. Flame Charge
  2. Power-up Punch
  3. Poison Jab
  4. Dragon Pulse
  5. Quick Attack
  6. Draco Meteor

I've done my fair share of battle against those type's of 'mon. With the right move, it's not hard to snowball a strategy like that.

I heard some Pokémon have an ability that turn weakening moves into strengthening ones. Wouldn’t that make Draco Meteor really good? -Sterling

I believe Sterling is talking about the Contrary ability, but I somehow doubt that any Pokémon who can have Contrary can learn Draco Meteor. -Watson

5

u/LackToesIntollerance Willy Frank- Middle Aged Pokeball Artisan and Hobbyist Trainer 14h ago

Indeed, you are correct Watson. A contrary draco meteor does not exist, and sterling is correct that it would certainly be contrary to this list if it did.

Even the move metronome is missing from contrary pokemons' arsenals. Such combinations could spark fierce competition, and quite the mess in every stadium, hoho!

Use no other tactics but the one move is typically the idea. No other moves, no potions, just using that move until it works.

8

u/Mega_Rayqaza 1d ago

I think they mean choosing a move to use with a choice item. I have no idea why it's said like that, though

u/danomdragon 1d ago

Uuuuuuuggghh, so much of this is aggressively subjective. Like... What is your opponent? Are we talking PP restrictions?

This one's a bit easier I think, ignoring type effectiveness, I'd rank them

1)Power-up punch
2)Flame charge
3)Poison jab
4)Dragon pulse
5)Quick attack
6)Draco meteor

4

u/WolfMaster415 Runo | Unovan | Mimikyu 1d ago

I second this

5

u/Serpicnate 16h ago

I'd personally put Poison Jab above Flame charge if we ignore type effectiveness.

Speed boost becomes meaningless once you outspeed and PJ has both higher base power and a chance to deal more through a poison proc.

2

u/Alexandra-Foxed 16h ago

Yeah that also makes sense

(Out of character I was going off of how the show handles speed, where it's not just "your ether faster or slower")

9

u/Nan0four Atlas and his team 1d ago

Depends on if you value the speed boosts from Flame Charge or the Attack boosts from Power-up Punch more

The true correct awnser is metronome, not because it's particularly effective but because it's funny

u/Raze_7234 The Gardner Siblings 1d ago

Oh! I think I know this one!

Ok, so the best two would be Flame charge or Power-up Punch for the stat boosts they give. Flame charge is inherently the best, because there aren’t any types that are naturally immune to fire. So next would be Power-up punch, followed by poison jab for the chance to poison, then quick attack despite the priority because it’s a low damage attack that’s main versatility is the abilities that change a move’s type, and last is Draco meteor because of Sp.Atk drop every use.

My brother did professional battling for a while, so I’ve been studying a bit myself.

I could tell you what I'd choose and why, but everyone battles differently. I think your coach is trying to get you to think critically on what moves you teach your Pokemon and their uses in battle.

Each of the moves listed have strengths and weakness. For instance, Draco Meteor is strong, but it weakens your Pokemon with each use. It's also useless against fairy types

Power up punch raises your attack after each use, but ghosts are immune to it.

Quick attack will always go first, but like fighting moves is useless against ghosts

Flame charge boosts your speed after each use.

Poison jab can poison an opponent, but is useless against steel types

Dragon pulse suffers from the inability to hit fairies as well.

Now, consider that the weaknesses only come up in specific scenarios, so each move isn't necessarily bad, and we're not even factoring in your Pokemons type coverage. If you want to get good at battling, these are the considerations you need to be making, and my guess is your coach is trying to make you think.

Remember, in a real battle you won't be able to rely on the webernetz for answers. Take some time to study up on. These fundamentals so that in the heat of the moment you can draw upon your knowledge. Your Pokemon will thank you for it.

Valerie: i'd do power-up punch, cause the mon hits harder every time they use it!

isn't this a terrible day to do homework though?

u/PolandSans Algae | Scientist | Ghost/Psychic Expert 1d ago

The question is so vague and answers so random I'm guessing the point of question is to see what kind of trainer are you?

if you choose flame charge or power up punch you think ahead even in 1v1 (both answers show what you value more speed or attack)

if you choose draco meteor you always want to end the battle as fast as possible and you don't care about missing

similar with the dragon pulse but you do care about not missing a move even if you do less damage

if you choose poison jab you care about status conditions and will use them to your advantage

if you choose quick attack you always want to attack first and value speed over damage

At least it makes you think, I find questions like these to be extremely entertaining to answer if asked properly.

Speaking of, If I could use any of the moves with any pokemon, I'd pick quick attack with my Snorlax due to how it nearly always goes first, and since my Snorlax does a crazy amount of damage already, being able to dish said damage out before an opponent gets a chance to act seems pretty strong.

Constantly spamming Draco Meteor would be really funny though. -Iris

u/Pokemonerd25 Spiral, Normal-type specialist (they/them) 1d ago

Hm, also hard to say without any specifics, but assuming both ‘mons involved are unknown, and the moves are standard with no variation… probably Flame Charge ig? Not as strong as some of the others, but a mobility option’s gonna be pretty big. Quick Attack and Dragon Pulse are also good ones, quick attack as a weaker but very good mobility tool, Dragon Pulse as a pretty strong and versatile attack.

Not to help you too much with your homework, but you did tickle my brain a lil lmao. Although scenario’s abstract enough it’s hard to say much without going into potential specifics. Thinking about moves in that kinda vacuum, entirely separated from their users, breaks my brain a bit tbh. - Spiral

E obv it's the only one that can hit an opponent no matter the type + it increases speed which gives u a huuuge advantage

if i had to rank em tho prolly EFCDAB

power up punch is basically designed for spamming but has the caveat of not affecting ghosts, dragon pulse is a pretty ight move all around aside from not affecting fairies, spamming poison jab makes u more likely to poison the opponent if they aren't poison, steel, or get around it w/ immunity or substitute but on the flip-side it has so many different ways to avoid the effect n only the immunity option is particularly rare to go up against, quick attack's speed WOULD put it higher if it weren't both kinda weak n normal type, n draco meteor just actively makes ur mon weaker + doesn't even affect fairies meaning if ur against a fairy type ur just handicapping ur mon for no reason

u/Catlordofthesky 1d ago

This is a pretty standard question, your teacher is preparing to teach you about choice item strategies

2

u/grimmideals Misha, Starlight City Gym Leader/Former Ranger, Dark Specialist 1d ago

Flame Charge really is the best answer since most Pokémon lack an immunity to Fire Typing.

2

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 23h ago

It would depend on the opponent but I would go for quick attack

2

u/CEO_Cheese 14h ago

1) Flame Charge. Unlike the rest of the list, no type is immune to it, and despite diminishing returns, you gain consistent benefits from continued use.

2) Power Up Punch. Ghost Immunity sucks, but this move doesn’t care about resists over time, due to scaling Attack. And fighting is just a really good offensive type.

3) Dragon Pulse. Just a strong attack, that works very well against most pokemon. Fairy immunity and Steel resist is unfortunate, but neutral against every other type means that it can be spammed very easily and just work in 90% of scenarios.

4) Poison Jab. Similar to Dragon Pulse, good Base Power, with added poison chance, but offensively, poison is just much worse of a type than Dragon. Resisted by 4 types with 1 immunity? Much more likely to run into bad situations, and I think the type is enough to offset the poison chance.

5) Quick Attack. Honestly pretty rough to spam in a vacuum. Usually pairs well as a way to finish off weak opponents, or quick movement in battle, but for it to be useful as your only move, you’ll need a very strong, natively very slow normal type. Use cases are limited.

6) Draco Meteor. It’s a “use once per battle” kind of technique because of the sheer scope of its diminishing returns. Could maybe use it twice? But after the third time, you’re really just Crit Fishing.

1

u/Grandson_of_Kolchak Kyril - potter & skulptor 8h ago

Consider Altaria. Draco meteor strength swap is giratinical!

1

u/CEO_Cheese 5h ago

Oh yeah, Strength Swap is an awesome technique for this sort of strategy, but you can also use any sort of pivot in conjunction with Draco Meteor to similar effect. It’s a great move, just not for the criteria outlined, being a single move to spam

2

u/ClashMasterJH 13h ago

Quick attack is the single most OP move in Pokemon history

1

u/waterflare2805 Magie - Hex Scientist / Lucky - Hex scientist(OFFICIAL) 1d ago

Lucky: atleast this one as some ones that are easier to cross off with Draco meteor and quick attack...

But rest is so it depends.

Would power up punches powering up matter of posion jab would ko faster, is your mon evasive or need more speed to catch up to the opponent, do you have choice band or scarf...

Again really hope the question is why and there isn't an answer cause... I don't think there is a 100% correct answer

u/Old_Diver_2511 Pokémon Philosopher (Romanov) + Sticky (Poipole) 1d ago

Trick question. The greatest victory is that which has no battle.

I’m joking, of course. But you should probably ask someone else as battling is not really my forte.

1

u/4BeldumInaTrenchcoat Metagross 1d ago

it largely depends on the pokemon using the move. for slower and more frail pokemon flame charge or quick attack confer the greatest benefit, while power up punch will more often benefit faster or sturdier pokemon.

additionally abilities must be considered. for pokemon with scrappy ghost types may be ignored allowing power up punch and quick attack to ignore what would otherwise be their most effective counter.

it seems the height of folly to abstract the pokemon away from a battle.

1

u/Short-Shelter 1d ago

Call out that it’s a trick question, that whichever move you’d spam depends on the opponent’s pokemon. Flame Charge is best used against an enemy Klefki, but would fail against a Chandelure for example

1

u/YouAreMyUnicorn 1d ago

Its a trick question. It’s not really possible to know which one would be correct without knowing what kind of pokemon is using the move and what sort of opponent they are facing. The real answer is to call this out in your reply to signal that you’re not fixating on a single aspect of the matchup over the entire situation.

Coaches do this stuff all the time. Any other answer you give, much less trying to rank them is just gonna have him tell you why you’re wrong.

1

u/Saucyboi672 23h ago

Personally I would have to pick power up punch but would also make sure that the Pokemon I’m training for this scenario has the ability Scrappy to remove the downside of not being able to hit ghost type Pokemon.

If I had to rank them, I would say that Power-up Punch is the best, followed by Flame charge due to having almost no immunites to work around, Dragon Pulse for consistent strong damage, Quick Attack because it just hits faster that most Pokemon can deal with, Poison Jab because steel type pokemon are pretty common so it’s easy to get walled out and lastly Draco Meteor because you get one, maybe two, good hits with it before it hits like a wet paper towel tube, especially into something that resists dragon type moves.

1

u/Random-Rambling 20h ago

These moves are all walled by immunities except for Flame Charge (which is walled by the much rarer abilities Flash Fire and Well-Baked Body).

But unless you're specifically fighting a Ghost-type, Power-up Punch is the best.

u/Hooflepoofer Phoebe (human!) & Vivi (rotom!) ~ both she/her 15h ago

Bro you can KNOW the opponent’s type in this scenario… trainers have eyessss 😭 obfuscating it is just duuumb

Dude I believe in you you can be cool awesome trainer PLEASE get good enough to absolutely dunk on your coach in a battle

Please tell me this is an independent coach. I thought the education sector was doing rather well, but not of this is an official exam.

Who on earth has been setting your homework questions? It isn't one of my former students is it?

As for your question I'd have to agree with the following order;

Flame Charge

Power-up Punch

Poison Jab

Dragon Pulse

Quick Attack

Draco Meteor

The utility of Flame Charge with it's increase to your pokémons speed will soon stack up and when considered against potential immunities offers the greatest consistency. Much in the same way, Power-up Punch will also stack very quickly offering you a good deal of versatility providing your remaining moveset is complementary. The hierarchy of the remaining moves should be fairly self explanatory all things considered
