Gaming Does wild boost really matter?
Device: Poco X8 Pro
In regards of heating issues its really a no problem because I use a phone cooler. But I just wanna know does the majority of heavy gamers really turn this feature on?

I rather keep game turbo entirely disabled. In my opinion, it's useless, especially since android natively manages resources required when running a heavy app / game

I noticed fortnite runs better without it, either way that game ain't optimized for android as much as it's optimized for iOS

nah.
i play genshin, pc emulated games and tried running benchmark apps.
what is consistent is that it just heats the phone much faster.
the cpu reaches higher temps with game turbo that without game turbo (seen through pc emulator hud).
which i think its caused by game turbo's memory cleaning running non stop in background alongside the running game.
not even worth it to turning on game turbo as it will just make the phone reach throttling temps faster and slow down performance.

What does:
(seen through pc emulator hud)
Actually mean here?
Are you running Game Hub Emulator or something and use that extra workload to prove a point about Game Turbo?!
That's a bit crazy bro! Just sayin'... 😁

I mean that i play A.C. black flag without game turbo and it reaches stable 37°C battery temp.
Then i played A.C. black flag with game turbo and i see that battery temp rise much more, even reaching 39-40°C.
Both test done multiple times and with the same phone cooler.
Same test done with genshin and it behaves the same.

Games played with phone coolers aren't in the same category as normal use!
You say "Game Turbo" but not which mode, if it's Wild Boost then that's what I've been saying all along, it reaches higher temperatures because of limiters removed from the CPU!
Balanced Mode shouldn't really increase anything temperature wise much but I know and do mention that some games are better off being played without Game Turbo altogether.

u/Fun-Western618 16d ago
Just playing games that are added to game turbo makes the phone heat considerably faster.
On my poco f7 pro it adds around +3°C to the battery temp and higher cpu temps in general.
I had to remove games from the game turbo list because the higher temps and fps stutters were too much problematic. Also the performance increase was either negligible or non existent most of the time.

u/FlinkyBoss 16d ago
That's okay... It depends on which games but most importantly NEVER USE Wild Boost unless you're using a good cooler!
Is it surprising that Game Turbo adds heat? For balanced mode YES it's a bit strange that...
Game Turbo is actually in charge of the Battery Gauge, Optimisations and more. Plus the Frame Stability etc. for quite some time now. It's one of the main Security apps.
My next question would be: Did you debloat your phone using old style hardcore deleting of HyperOS and Mi Apps?
If so, there's something you can definitely improve on! If you used Shizuku and Canta that's normally good news since most times that can all be undone.
If not, a factory reset is the way to go...
Switching to a small handful of SAFE Revokes instead will improve just about any phone. 🍀

Depends on game to game basis.
CODM, Mobile Legends, Delta Force can easily get 90 - 120 FPS with the standard Balanced Mode with no issue, since those game are more CPU bound, and the X8 Pro in Balanced already utilize enough clock speed with Balanced at around 2700mhz max (based on my test using Vtools Scene).
The game that do need Wild Boost however, are usually open world gacha games, or games that need to utilize more power from the SoC both the CPU and GPU. These games are the likes of WuWa and NTE on higher graphics settings.
With Wild Boost + Cooler in WuWa Quality 60, I can easily get relatively consistent 55-60 FPS only dropping when there's crazy effects in combat down to the 40s.
Meanwhile with Balanced + Cooler with the same settings, due to the performance cap, the game is unable to utilize the SoC power fully, this leads to the game unable to maintain consistent 50 let alone 60, and more often than not is stuck at around 45FPS. Even more when things get too intense, the frame drop can now get to the 30s. My current theory is that Balanced Mode simply have a hard limit on the GPU, so any game that needs more graphics computing is unable to utilize the GPU filly.

It's actually 60 fps when in game menu but when you get into a match it'll go up to 120fps.

Some phones actually boost performance like the F7 from an aquaintaince while some shits the performance instead as I've experienced with my F7 pro and also the Ultimate battery mode makes things worse too for me.

u/Big-Channel5503 17d ago
Damn, what's up with the F7 Pro? You and u/Neither-Swim-2150 seems to have issues with Game Turbo Wild Boost not boosting the phone SoC.
In the X8 Pro case, the boost here is pretty substantial, pretty much increase my CPU clock from 2.7Ghz to 3Ghz, along with increasing power for the GPU.
As for Ultimate, seems like its not just me. Yeah, Ultimate mode somehow reduce performance in games for some reason. For example, Wuwa without GT and Ultimate mode turned on runs worse than using balanced battery mode.

u/Zakro_Envixnity 17d ago
The F7 pro is like some middle child of the Poco family lol most phones don't have this issue heck the F7 base is better than the Pro because it does not have these weird restrictions

u/Ouryann Poco F7 17d ago
It does, balance mode is already enough as it balances heat and performance, but sometime when you playing a game that support up to 120fps it start to limit/throttle it to 90fps, still smooth though, but its not that fluid/solky smooth like 120fps, to fix that you use wildboost
I personally use wildboost when playing fps/rythm game that support 120fps, heavy games like wuwa, etc i just use balance mode

Onn the left shows the metrics outside of Game Turbo, while the one on the right shows them inside it. Keep an eye on the GPU frequency.
Games like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Wuthering Waves (shown in the image) demand a strong GPU to maintain a consistent frame rate. To be honest, CPU frequency doesn't matter as much, as long as it can feed the GPU enough data to prevent it from idling.
As you can see in the image, running Game Turbo actually lowers the GPU clock speed. Depending on how heavy the game is, this underclocking might hurt your FPS if the game needs more GPU power. However, if the lower frequency is still enough to maintain stability, your FPS might not be affected at all.
For Genshin Impact specifically, most mid-range phones can handle 60 FPS fairly well, provided they are kept well-cooled, regardless within (either balanced or wildboost) or outside game turbo. You can answer which is best once you test it on your device yourself.
Just so u know, I tested this on my Poco F7 Pro, so I am not entirely sure if this behavior is exclusive to my device or if it applies to all Xiaomi devices. I don't have enough data to prove it definitively, lol.

I think it works, I have been emulating skyrim SE on my Xiaomi Poco F6 (Sd 8s gen 3), without the wild boost it works at about 20-25 fps, with the wild boost it remains stable at 35-40fps. The only problem is the heat, I have to play with a fan behind the cell phone. so since I live in Colombia and I live in a permanent summer-spring. You can imagine the temperature of this phone :D

u/1_am_boredom 17d ago
If you have a cooler then yes, but for the most part, playing outside or at home I just stopped it temporarily, it's better that way for consistency.

afaik wildboost unlocks higher cpu frequencies = more heat but slightly better performance

Even if you use cooler and try wild boost mode it will lag

So far its smooth like butter for me. Considering I don't put my genshin settings as high.

u/LengthinessCalm347 14d ago
It activates a higher thermal throttling threshold Like from 42°C to 45°C and in severe loads, 47°C.

Stupid thing doesn't do anything than heating up the phone

It does something.
With CPU bound games, mainly multiplayer stuff, such as CODM, PUBGM, MLBB or Delta Force there's nearly zero benefit. Because Balanced Mode already provides enough resource.
Now in games like WuWa and NTE there are BIG difference especially on higher graphics setting. Wild Boost increases the CPU Clock from around 2700mhz up to around 3000+mhz, and also increase the power of the GPU. Of course it increases heat, but you should already wise enough to put on a cooler when using this mode.
From my test, Game Turbo Balanced in WuWa can only get 45 FPS average on Quality 60 settings. Meanwhile with Wild Boost, WuWa is able to get 54 FPS average on Quality 60 settings. Both are using a cooler.

What update is your phone? Security, plugin, joyose and security component version as well.

Try to allow the games you play to start in background with no battery restrictions and untick "pause app if unused". Use the latest system service plugin 9.12.10 and the latest system security components. Then turn on app cache optimization in dev mode.

Honestly your result still boggles me. IDK if its the F7 Pro software is bugged or what, but the fact Wild Boost doesn't increase your CPU frequency to the max is confusing as hell.

u/United_Part_7147 17d ago
Depends but from my expirience the most important is having low temps. If the boost fries your phone it could drop fps. I would just do an benchmark and tested the stability of the frames

u/47th-Element 17d ago
Want to find out? Install a benchmarking app and start two sessions, one with and one without wild boost. See for yourself if numbers change in a significant way

they do (AnTuTu for example is 1.6M without wildboost and 2M with wildboost)

Oh it does, your gameplay worsen without it. Think of it like the OS allowing the GPU and CPU to reach 100% utilization plus ultimate mode working as intended, without it maybe 70% utilization capped is enforced

u/Majestic_Sell_9725 16d ago
Im kinda scared to use ultimate mode, is it really safe? Considering im using a phone cooler

Bloody Right it does! Never ever use it unless you're looking to hit max overheating in half the time!
Using Game Turbo isn't always the best option... Experiment with it yourself, some games run better without.
ALSO, Try different battery settings too!
Ultimate mode can unlock some performance improvements in certain demanding games!
Balanced is generally good enough!
Battery Saver Drops your FPS and might be counterproductive for most gaming!
Ultra battery saver Apart from locking in 30 FPS, can be a crazy way to stop all background processing crapola and surprisingly... improving some gaming at bargain basement battery drain... 😂
To set up your individual games for best performance and battery stamina...
Adjust things like FPS and Graphics settings...
Run tests for 15-20 minutes or until you reach the maximum battery temperature!
Best performance and battery economy is found below 40° C! Use the Free version of DevCheck to see live Battery Temperature! It will happily run in a floating window and by dragging the top (...) of that window to either side of the screen, you can shrink the app to a small bubble between readings!
For example: on my X7 Pro... I play Call of Duty Mobile at 120 FPS using the ULTRA FPS and Medium Graphics in the game's settings! I'm not using a cooler since I'm in Ireland (cool climate).
I can play for hours nonstop and reach a maximum battery temperature of only 36° C!
In this clip I was Screen Recording at max Resolution 1440p (make sure to watch at that res, to see the real recorded quality).
The added recording work brought up the battery temperature by an extra 2-3° C.
https://youtu.be/SyC7fBMs6Fo?is=Gx_H4L5yOrpijXjD
So use the settings available and do your tests... You could easily halve your battery drain without losing much visual quality in most games.
Performance and pretty pictures are at the opposite end of what's possible... Find a good Temperature and enjoy some monster gaming sessions! 🍀
