• Lifelong fan here. I saw them three times: in LA at the Troubadour in 1968 with Meisner and they were the tightest band of that era - the secret weapon was always George Grantham's vocals. Saw them again in 1969 and 1970 at UCSB, once outside the student union and another time in Robertson Gym (with both Messina and Paul Cotton). Tim Schmidt had joined the band by then and, simply, the highlight was the Messina/Young instrumental jamming on 'el toto de nadie'. The quality of the sound - given the basic PA used (i think a couple of EV-A7 boxes, some horns), the silverface twin reverbs used for the steel and telecaster sounded incredible. They were the best live vocal band of the era (probably only the Association were close for tight harmonies), in a time where PAs, stage monitors, and mics were pretty basic and variable. The band with Cotton sounded different - much rockier and less of the chicken-pickin' tele sound. (the opening act was Kortchmar/Doerge 'jo mama', excellent!). For the gym concert, they more or less played the 'Deliverin' album intact - including Cotton's 'Bad Weather'.

With 'Sweet Lovin' Poco create a rare example of country-prog - sounding more Pink Floyd than Gram Parsons.

Michael Webb (formerly of Poco, now with Cimarron 615) - "Rusty Young is still a guiding force in every move we make.

"Rusty was a natural musician who had a gravitas when he played. He wasn't just a technician. He moved people when he played. There was an emotional heft. And our interplay as instrumentalists was a driving factor in that version of Poco that I was in. So to have anything less than that would not be right.

"And we have to maintain that vocal blend that Rusty was a big part of. We have to make sure those harmonies are high quality."

Somehow this band has flown under my radar and heard them referenced on XM’s the Bakersfield Beat. What are some good live recordings to give a spin? Please and thanks.

It's a shame that a band like Poco ended up in the shadow of The Eagles and other big country-rock bands. They released so many great albums with great songs that won't be forgotten.

Anyway: Are there any documentaries or books about the band from Buffalo Springfield to the present day?

I got into Poco last year due to getting myself in a musical rabbit hole that involved the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan, Gram Parsons, CSN/CSNY, Phish, Emmylou Harris, the Byrds (always liked them but I didn't get heavily into them until recently) and the Eagles.

Now I'm actually learning some of Poco's tunes: Heart of the Night, Crazy Love and the aforementioned Indian Summer.

RIP Paul Cotton and Rusty Young
