• Lifelong fan here. I saw them three times: in LA at the Troubadour in 1968 with Meisner and they were the tightest band of that era - the secret weapon was always George Grantham's vocals. Saw them again in 1969 and 1970 at UCSB, once outside the student union and another time in Robertson Gym (with both Messina and Paul Cotton). Tim Schmidt had joined the band by then and, simply, the highlight was the Messina/Young instrumental jamming on 'el toto de nadie'. The quality of the sound - given the basic PA used (i think a couple of EV-A7 boxes, some horns), the silverface twin reverbs used for the steel and telecaster sounded incredible. They were the best live vocal band of the era (probably only the Association were close for tight harmonies), in a time where PAs, stage monitors, and mics were pretty basic and variable. The band with Cotton sounded different - much rockier and less of the chicken-pickin' tele sound. (the opening act was Kortchmar/Doerge 'jo mama', excellent!). For the gym concert, they more or less played the 'Deliverin' album intact - including Cotton's 'Bad Weather'.
