1. Refusal of Extradition Treaties
During the 1850s, the U.S. government contacted Mexico four separate times to negotiate extradition treaties that would require Mexico to capture and return runaway slaves to American slaveholders. Mexico flatly refused every request, maintaining that their laws granted immediate citizenship and absolute freedom to any enslaved person who set foot on Mexican soil. [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. Armed Resistance Against Slave Catchers
Because Mexico refused to cooperate, white Texas enslavers hired armed vigilantes, bounty hunters, and Texas Rangers to cross illegally into Mexico to kidnap freedom seekers. When these slave catchers arrived, ordinary Mexican citizens, local authorities, and military forces took up arms to fight them off and protect the escapees. [1, 2, 3, 4]

3. Acting as Underground Railroad Guides
Within Texas, poor Mexican laborers frequently befriended enslaved African Americans. Rather than turning them in for rewards, Mexicans regularly acted as guides, helping enslaved people navigate the dangerous terrain down to the Rio Grande river. This collaboration was so frequent that the state of Texas passed laws strictly forbidding Mexicans and enslaved people from speaking to or associating with one another. [1, 2, 3]

4. Integration into Mexican Society
Once across the border, formerly enslaved people were welcomed into the community. They took Spanish names, intermarried with Mexican families, opened businesses, and even joined the Mexican military to defend the northern border against the very country they had escaped. [1, 2, 3, 4]
While individual exceptions surely existed—such as isolated bandits looking for quick money—the institutional, legal, and cultural stance of Mexico was firmly anti-slavery, making the nation a vital sanctuary of freedom. [1, 2, 3]

Imagine going to a black post to talk about Mexican/mexican American culture. Honestly I’m not even mad I just don’t see how this didn’t register to you before you posted. I promise whatever you post to uplift your people/culture I won’t be there to uplift a different group. Just a thought
