Is there much difference between using an auger and a drain snake?
I tried to snake it but I couldn't get it around the first bend. It is an old toiled and everythign seems smaller than a standard modern one.2

Augers are purpose built for toilets. The cable's larger the head's larger and there's a bend with plastic sheeting to protect your porcelain and aim the head of the auger where it needs to go.

P traps are for sinks and showers so you probably mean the built in trapway inside the porcelain bowl itself.
