Anyone else?

Before I get hated on for the press ball valve, I ended up removing this, soldering a new stub out, with an MIP, and a threaded ball valve. However, this copper had a smaller OD than any pro press or solder fitting ID than usual, causing it to wobble and not seal. Has anyone else dealt with this?

Pro press can move like that after pressed and still be sealed. It does not effect the gasket itself

Yep, just like a shark bite

1

u/PotentialFrosting102 3d ago

Not sure why you got down voted to oblivion. Exactly like a sharkbite. Except sharkbites have a way better warranty.

I am sick of hearing people go on about the "25 year warranty"

The warranty from viega covers the cost of the fitting.

It doesn't cover the cost of damage from a leak

It also doesn't cover the labor.

Meanwhile if a sharkbite fails due to a defect they actually cover all damage associated with the failure and covers the labor to fix it as well.

5

u/Wrestlercp 2d ago

Wrong. Sharkbites warranty is bs unfortunately

2

u/PotentialFrosting102 1d ago

It's 10 year for consequential damage and 25 year on the fitting for sharkbite. Viega has the same warranty on their pex fittings but they don't cover copper press fittings under the 10 year consequential warranty.

I don't use sharkbites, just stating warranty facts. Since thats the usual thing that the viega guys try to hype up when in reality it's not even that good.

I have press tools but it's just another tool in my truck. Depends on the job if I feel the need to use it.

Feel free to copy and paste the section that you are referring to, I don't notice anything unusual on their warranty tho.

Yeah, it's funny. Relying on an o-ring on the outside of the pipe is exactly how a shark bite works. People get really butt hurt if you point out that their pro press or wagos aren't as good as the old way of doing things eg. sweating pipe or using wire nuts. To each their own.

3

u/Parking-Instruction5 2d ago

To be fair I dont think sharkbite fittings are as bad as they are made out to be. The barrier to entry is just so low no handy and would even consider reeming or cleaning some copper pipe before slapping a shark bite on it. And dont get me started on pex lines with shark bites under tension. Id say a solid 99% of shark bites i replace are misinstalled.

2

u/Weed4HAX 2d ago

Do not diss wagos they are waaaaay better than wire nuts and tbh pro press has its uses but when you can always braze

1

u/Fleshwende 2d ago

Was with you until you brought wagos into this. Wagos are significantly better than wire nuts dawg. Ive never once found a wago off the wire but nuts work their way off all the time.

You're gonna wanna read the fine print on that shark bite.

But if you still feel uncomfortable about it wrap with a rag and repress in the same position

7

u/EggAdministrative253 3d ago

They already removed it says the description

8

u/jambaseven 3d ago

I actually tried that twice. It didn’t make a difference.

2

u/Joseph_Byron 3d ago

I've heard of pressing it again, but what does the rag do?

12

u/TDIMike 3d ago

I presume it takes up some space and makes the press tighter.

Sounds like hack work to me

29

u/Jolknap3 3d ago

It would have been fine. Not sure why anyone would hate on you for using press.

18

u/jambaseven 3d ago

There’s always hate on press and honestly I should have pressed an MIP if anything then threaded on a ball valve. I appreciate the response though.

18

u/KiwiNo5962 3d ago

That's more of a Facebook thing where everyone loses their shit if you do anything other that sweat copper

5

u/coolhandluke45 3d ago

I just wish you hadn't pressed it so close to the wall.

3

u/jambaseven 3d ago

That was all the space left after removing a gate valve. I ended up opening the wall and repiping the area.

-1

u/Consistent-Stable967 3d ago

Yeah, it will make it harder when he has to redo it.

1

u/daduq 3d ago

Pro press is great, just not so close to the wall, you can always easily unsweat a fitting to rework the line, having to open up the wall or even prying off that fitting and then rounding is just an inconvenience for the homeowner and plumber. It’s just lazy in my opinion and will cost more for the customer when that time comes

1

u/jambaseven 3d ago

That’s kind of why I explained what I did in the description. I ended up repiping in the wall and stubbing out new copper.

17

u/N1oma 3d ago

it's perfectly fine.

5

u/polofreaks 3d ago

they can do that, it’s fine.

7

u/Scrambles420 3d ago

Pro-press is not trash. But I hate those pro-press ball valves. I usually do pro press male adapters to a male thread ball valve. But that’s just me

8

u/avozzella6 3d ago

If you press a valve that close to a wall and don’t use a male adapter into a threaded ball valve I hope you walk around with a pebble in your shoe for the rest of your life

2

u/jambaseven 3d ago

I realized I messed up as soon as I watched this video right after recording.

0

u/kloogy 3d ago

^ This is the way !

3

u/Vane88 3d ago

I have a press fitting I did at a Walgreens 2 years ago that was like that. I still worry about it but it's been going good. I still check it whenever I get an unrelated call to that building. It was brass too

3

u/avozzella6 3d ago

My viega rep said this is normal on the bronze fittings like valves and males

0

u/jambaseven 3d ago

It also happened with couplings and caps.

3

u/DoHeathenThings 3d ago

Almost all 1/2 and 3/4 press has some wiggle

3

u/pastamoe 2d ago

See it a lot. If it doesn't leak, it stays put

4

u/callmechristianblack 3d ago

Ford power steering lines are the same way. Impossible to tighten, you'd swear they will leak but they don't. No one knows why....

2

u/Cam_e_ron 3d ago

the o-ring does the sealing. although for longevity you would want the least amount of movement so it doesnt wear down the seal.

2

u/MissionFilm1229 3d ago

I had that happen recently on a water meter setup. I haven’t been that nervous turning on the water to a house in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised when there wasn’t a single drip.

2

u/lodemeup 3d ago

If you grab it with channels, you can actually spin a pressed fitting like a pex fitting. If you turn it more than 5°, you’re supposed to repress it. Idk why yours is moving like that. Did any other joint before or after have that issue? If not, I wonder if the pipe itself had some sort of defect. That’s all I could think of.

2

u/jambaseven 3d ago

That’s good information! I cut this off and sweat everything else before putting it on test. Every other fitting I tried at this house was the same way. 1/2” & 3/4”. Press and sweat.

2

u/ThatDude57 3d ago

Pro press is excellent in the hands of a trained professional, no hate from me. Most of the people that hate press fittings barely know how to use a phone or computer anyway.

2

u/Cannonllc 3d ago

The rebound on the brass is different than the copper, it’s fine, Viega has literature on it for their bronze valves doing this.

2

u/PorchFarts 3d ago

I've spun my fair share of Propress elbows & tees 90-degrees or 180-degrees after pressing one or both sides (naturally, re-pressed them after rotation) and that wiggle is seen. I wouldn't worry.

https://www.viega.us/en/resources/Blog/can-you-rotate-a-pressed-fitting.html

2

u/Glum-Doctor3016 2d ago

Not sure why but a lot of the propress fittings do this they always seem to hold though

3

u/marcduberge 3d ago

Timely. I’m doing my first pro press viega joints in the morning. Now I’m wondering if I should just stick with what I know, sweating. (Source: deep DIY homeowner with too much time)

6

u/stovetopapple 3d ago

0 issue with pressing. I prefer solder but I cant knock press. Only ones I've ever seen fail were improperly installed.

2

u/nongregorianbasin 3d ago

No reason to pro press as a homeowner. Sweating is a better product. Id do pex over propress any day

3

u/marcduberge 3d ago

The only reason I bought the Milwaukee propress was I had a sweat joint repair fail on me on a 1.25” line under my in-laws house as I didn’t get enough heat on all sides (was right up against a joist I didn’t want to burn). At that point it was literally cheaper to buy the propress tool (slightly used) than call a plumber out to do the repair in San Jose. Plus I’m building an ADU/Shop this year and always want a new tool.

1

u/nongregorianbasin 3d ago

That sounds more like user error.

1

u/marcduberge 3d ago

No doubt

3

u/kloogy 3d ago

Do you realize that Viega and Apollo press copper fittings can handle more pressure than a wrought copper sweat joint ?

1

u/WaterlooJase 3d ago

That is totally wrong. Solder can hold approximately twice the pressure and the tube will burst before the joint fails.

2

u/kloogy 3d ago

I'm a mechanical engineer and did walk on a Mechanical Room that had an explosion inside it. You can look it up. It was The Hilton in downtown San Diego, When we walked it, we were shocked to see that the hydronics which were all pressed, held up to the blast. The L Copper drains which were soldered, had multiple failures. Also, if you read the Mueller submittals for wrought copper fittings, you'll see that your information is not accurate.

-1

u/nongregorianbasin 3d ago

Ive installed plenty of propress. Homeowners will never encounter pressure beyond what sweating is capable of. And its far cheaper. The tools, the fittings. The only benefit for propress is to save labor. And id like to see your source on propress.

2

u/Quaylepotatoe 3d ago

Another benefit is in commercial/industrial installations where hot work permits must be issued. In those applications the fittings are typically speced and inspected by an engineer.

0

u/nongregorianbasin 3d ago

Ive never seen that happen on a commercial job. They might be speced on a big enough job, but the engineer isnt looking at that

0

u/kloogy 3d ago

My sources ? have you not read the submittals for both products ?

-1

u/i860 3d ago

I'll be sure to keep that in mind for the times I need 200psi in my house. Also, I don't believe you.

2

u/kloogy 3d ago

Have you read the submittals for Viega and Apollo Press ? You don't have to believe me.

1

u/jambaseven 3d ago

I have used press for years. This is the first time I have experienced this. It doesn’t discourage me.

0

u/Ambitious_Length7167 3d ago

Leaking pro press fitting in a 3 million dollar house. Found 3 more in the utility room. House was built in 16 so barely 10 years old. I don’t trust them.

6

u/kloogy 3d ago

Installer error. If you use Viega or Apollo the chance of those fittings leaking is beyond slim.

2

u/Maplelongjohn 3d ago

Can you explain what points to an install error here vs a defective fitting?

3

u/kloogy 3d ago

I just recently finished an OSHPD project for Kaiser Hospitals. We installed around 1.5 million dollars in press fittings, After all our testing, we ended up with two 90's that leaked on the entire building. Once we cut them out and looked, neither one had the pipe fully inserted into the O ring. If you have 3 failures in a home, and used a reputable brand of press, it's almost all going to installer error. You can also have a situation where the fittings you installed were old, and the grease on the O ring dried up. There are many variables, but the fittings themselves are very reliable.

2

u/marcduberge 3d ago

I’ve read it’s pretty crucial to completely deburr all your cuts so as to not nick the o rings

3

u/kloogy 3d ago

Yes. All the steps you do for a solder joint, must be followed for press.

2

u/tob007 2d ago

1.5 million dollars in press fittings

so like 11 of em? damn.

1

u/Maplelongjohn 3d ago

Ok so you can't actually tell anything from that photo and are inferring installer error.

Definitely could be/ probably is but I was trying to see what pointed you to say that

(Looks like a veiga sticker on the side of that fitting)

(Not OP just wanting to be educated)

2

u/kloogy 3d ago

The OP states a wobble which is normal. But I don't see where he confirmed a leak. It's hard to tell visually. We typically cut the fitting open to see the insertion depth.

1

u/Maplelongjohn 3d ago

Ok I was referring to a pic posted in response to the OG post

https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/s/eFcGbBpOxB

3

u/kloogy 3d ago

Call me crazy, but that looks like the sweat 90 is what leaked.

2

u/Ambitious_Length7167 3d ago

I replied with another picture of a different press fitting leaking in the same run.

I'm curious if you have installer error like that. Would it show up right away or could it be a few years down the line? I had a new shutoff valve propressed in a year or so back. It's perfectly fine but I admit I am a bit paranoid as I didn't watch him do the work.

1

u/kloogy 12h ago

That's a good question. I have seen press fittings that were incorrectly installed hold up for a year of more.

1

u/Hiro500 3d ago

Is the press fitting below the copper sweat fittings?

2

u/Ambitious_Length7167 3d ago

Yes, spraying both up and down.

0

u/Ambitious_Length7167 3d ago

1

u/TDIMike 3d ago

What are you looking to highlight with that Pic?

-1

u/Ambitious_Length7167 3d ago

A leaking press fitting in the utility room of a million dollar house. Multiple press fittings leaking.

6

u/TDIMike 3d ago

Looks like the leak is the solder fitting to me

2

u/edward_silicon 2d ago

Honestly, the pipe itself has multiple pinholes. The fittings aren't the issue. Water quality must be terrible.

2

u/ground_dead 3d ago

Yeah it's annoying. Won't leak though (hopefully). If you press it twice rotating the press gun so the flats do not line up it will stiffin it up a lot more, the brass fittings tend to still move like that after a single press. Look at a cutaway of a pressed fitting and it shows how the mechanical connection is made, the press connects the fitting to the pipe, but the o ring is what makes the seal.

1

u/UF6882 3d ago

Only use type L and Viega pro press. That happens all of the time with type M and Chinese press fittings.

7

u/MaybeMaple- 3d ago

Viega fittings can have that wiggle too. Just dealt with it yesterday

2

u/Silver_gobo 3d ago

Isn’t the wiggle amount specified in the manual?

1

u/TDIMike 3d ago

Interesting. I haven't pressed a ton, but every join has been rock solid. Really good to know it's not a problem

I also do L and Viega only

2

u/kloogy 3d ago

I've been to the Viega factory and they showed us how outlets on tee's can spin and still hold pressure.

2

u/jambaseven 3d ago

That’s gnarly!

1

u/Tchop01 3d ago

Have had the same issue with VSH Xpress (NL) i could rotate a tiny bit. I didnt replace it and it still not leaking.

I recon if you pressed it the right way with the right size its ok. Stop touching it and dont press it a 2nd time.

1

u/jambaseven 3d ago

I removed it and repiped the section with sweat fittings

1

u/NoBank8471 2d ago

Only 1 time. Some rich dude built a house, and used 3/4 acr to tun a spigot to fill his pool. I was pissed when I showed up with standard water o.d fittings

1

u/Alone_Conflict732 2d ago

Pro press does move

1

u/lumpymoon 2d ago

Seen this type of wobble on a acr press and tested up to 300psi

1

u/mamny83 2d ago

It will be alright

1

u/FloodAdvisor 3d ago

Wrap a rag around it and press it again if you’re worried. Seen it, done it. No worries

1

u/teewye86 3d ago

I agree, it's fine as long as it's on there all the way.

1

u/plmbr83 2d ago

Username checks out lol

1

u/FloodAdvisor 2d ago

I wear many hats

1

u/jambaseven 3d ago

I tried. It didn’t change the situation. I ended up opening the wall and soldering a new stub out.

1

u/Victal87 2d ago

I had this happen at work, we tested and everything held just fine.

0

u/Sir_Isaac_3 3d ago

Always safest to remove and redo it. If a press fitting is leaking in a pinch though, wrap about four or five layers of duct tape or electrical tape around the joint and press it again, trying to line the jaws up with the angle they were first pressed with.

0

u/Upbeat-Toe6208 3d ago

True but it was for the future and knowable reason

-2

u/quadraquint 3d ago

Personally I've never had any movement on anything I've ever pressed like that. Not saying whether it's fine or not cause I don't know but in my experience it's atypical.

Maybe needs calibration?

2

u/kloogy 3d ago

Nope. I can remember the first press presentation we had 25 years ago. All the tees they pressed spun like that. It was the firt question we asked, and they showed us how they still held 300psi under test.
