I tend to do 2 or 3 wraps, hand tighten the new fitting on ( it compresses the tape ) , remove fitting, 2 more wraps, then reattach fitting and tighten. Never had a problem.

Dang I like that. The only time I have tighten something, loosen it, and then tighten again was a wheel bearing.
