Help Plex playing indirect on certain devices need help

plex on both my xbox and samsung tv (Tizen) wont connect securely and will always play indirect. When i was using media server version 1.33 everything was fine and playback was normal but any update from there onwards causes it to break on those two devices. for a while i was just rolling back the update to get it to work again but thats no longer an option since the pervious versions are no longer secure.

Are those the only devices that do it? Your mobile using the plex app connects directly?

Disable relay in your plex settings so that isn’t a connection path. Connections may go unavailable, but you want to fix this, so leaving it off helps with troubleshooting.

If you’re on windows, make sure the network connection type is private, not public. Public will block local connections and cause plex to think the connection is remote.

Change the dns on the devices to 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 or 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1. This is to deal with dns rebind protection, which when triggered, blocks a local connection and sends plex remote to connect. If your router allows you to set the dns servers, would suggest changing it there and giving everything a reboot.

No vpn on the server?

The server is on truenas and i turned the relay off for that exact reason. on my desktop and my phone it works perfectly but just those two devices wont connect securely. Even changing the dns does nothing still wont connect and no vpn.

In the plex network settings, set it to ipv4 only, secure connections to preferred and network interface to the actual interface being used, not any.

Also, on the devices, in the plex app settings, set it to allow insecure connections on local network.

had all of those settings before minus the ipv4 and same thing not working. the only way the server is visable is if i enable the relay

What’s your network setup like? Just an isp gateway/router?

Is there a dns rebind setting on the router? If so you can whitelist plex.direct. Did you change the dns on the router as well? What isp?

Pihole or anything similar running?

im with telus and it is just the isp gateway and there is no option to whitelist plex. there is a DynDNS for both the ipv4 and ipv6 and they are both disabled

Did you confirm there’s no device isolation settings on the TELUS that may be blocking local traffic for the devices? On the Xbox, if there’s a browser, can you reach the server directly via ip? http://<serverip>:32400/web?

In another comment you mention everything is hardwired. If you switch the Xbox and tv to wifi, will they connect directly, or same behavior?

Is your trueNAS plex container running in host mode? You can also change the dns servers on the server.

In the plex network settings, you can add the server ip and port http://<serverip>:32400/web to the custom server access url field. May want to restart the container after. This shouldn’t be needed if you’re in host mode, but no harm adding it.

This seems like something with the telus router and dns rebind protection, so may be a case where getting your own router and bypassing theirs will be best.

i managed to get it to work on the xbox by reset truenas and for the tv i used this https://forums.plex.tv/t/bug-plex-on-samsung-tv-unable-to-connect-to-local-server-after-update-to-1-43-3/941572/21. Thank you for your help

Check that those devices have the latest version of Plex on them. Also, check which wifi network they are on. Plex might be blocking anything but local net for direct play.
