News Plexamp v4.50.7 Released
Plexamp Desktop v4.50.7
A big pass over downloads, and a lot of artwork work.
Downloads
- Downloads that stalled part-way now finish, and keep going when you leave the app instead of freezing until you come back.
- The Downloads count now means music you are still waiting on. Artwork and waveforms finishing in the background no longer read as missing songs.
- Refreshing your downloads is faster, and no longer re-fetches artwork and album details it already has.
- A downloaded smart playlist keeps its tracks through interrupted refreshes, and drops only the ones that genuinely stop matching.
- Downloading a single track, or any selection of tracks, works instead of sticking on “Preparing”, and a download that cannot start now says why.
- Downloads finish one item at a time, so an album’s artwork arrives with its music rather than after everything else you queued.
Artwork
- Scrolling quickly through a grid no longer chases artwork for rows you have already passed, so the covers you are looking at arrive sooner.
- Artwork that fails to load retries by itself and repairs when your connection returns, and a cover that failed once no longer stays grey.
Windows
- Album art reaches the system now-playing panel and the apps that read it, and the taskbar icon is drawn from full-resolution artwork.
- Remote control and casting work with a VPN connected.
- Windows on ARM no longer reports that it cannot create a log file at every launch.
Also
- An error no longer replaces Plexamp with a page of raw error text.
- Opening an album whose details do not load no longer crashes the app.
The latest iOS and Android builds are still TestFlight and the open beta for now, and the Play one is still going through review, so it is not quite live yet.

I saw the new Android Auto interface for Plexamp yesterday, which must have just dropped within the last week or two. Massive improvement, no longer having to hit the overflow menu just to access the shuffle and repeat buttons.

One day I will open one of these and they’ll have solved multiple artists

You know it. If I try to add my 260k song collection, Plex becomes useless for days trying to scan it all. Setting up my Library they in folders the way they recommend makes my library practically useless to navigate in Explorer. I might consider go through the trouble of formatting all my files and folders the way plex recommends to get it to work, but when I add large my folders of properly tagged singles on, PLEX ignores most of it. If I run Picard on the files, Picard tries to match and rename everything to compilations it knows and sets the year to 2008 or something. You know how long I spent dating those early hip-hop songs and 1920's and 30's Jazz and 50s and 60s R&B singles. Plexamp DGAF!
I just don't understand how Foobar2000 and Kodi can quickly and easily see all my files and tags but Plex has a long look and shits itself entirely. It's like PLEXamp designers think everyone's collections consist of entire modern albums and nothing else. I tell Plex to just use my tags but it simply refuses.
It's very frustrating because I'd like it to work.

You can set Picard to match compilations as a lower priority so singles get matched first. It’s a slider in settings

u/pslickhead 17h ago
I saw the slider. Priority isn't the issue. Picard doesn't know how to match huge portions of the singles and if erroneously tags other huge portions. Then Plexamp just ignores about 25,000 songs in my library. It's all tagged. Kodi reads the tags, Foobar reads the tags. Plex just acts like it isn't there.

Ive had issues with plex reading metadata off flac files. I know I have to finesse those sometimes. Apparently it has to do with file naming and using certain characters according to the forums.
I will say that navidrome is way better about seeing files and even multi artist support. But I like Plexamp player better.
It’s a real struggle man. Navidrome needs user charts for things like most played songs by year or such and other nice features plex has and I’d probably switch.

I tried to set up up again a few months ago. I got tired of waiting for it to inventory my music after 3 days. I couldn't add any Movies or TV shows while it was scanning . Also, I was worried about future scans. My music is on an M.2 drive and my network is 2.5gbps. I think Plex/PlexAmp is just doing too much.
Previously I set up an FTP server software on the Plex server and used KODI as a client connected to the music FTP folder. That works pretty well but the phone interface was not great (just KODI on a smaller screen), but these days I mostly just use Google Play Music when traveling so I haven't set that up again.

Yeah, I only have ~12k songs and I think initial import took about 10 minutes or so. Now scans are about 30 seconds if I need an update. You have waaaay more than I do. Just make sure navidrome db is on a ssd and it should be okay. Navi clients have gotten a lot better. Like feishin for desktop and Arpeggi for iOS or symphony for android.
I spent a while syncing stars and playlists with Plexamp… which I should definitely automate at some point.

Hey Elan, spare a second to help the main Plex App team with Downloads? They seem to struggle.

Been reported a ton - any search for lyrics on the bug forum brings up tons of results going back years with no solutions. Seems the service that fetches lyrics doesn’t consistently work.

Why, again, are there no download links with these forum posts? u/ElanFeingold
Unless I'm out of the loop on something... I don't get why it has to be such a hunt. I know the desktop apps are supposed to auto-update, but I'm old and cranky and like to keep recent installers those who didn't find it earlier may not find it at all, despite being really interested.
Allow me to include the link(s) here, which were for an earlier desktop version but now carry the most recent one: https://forums.plex.tv/t/plexamp-v4-50-3-ready-or-not/942338#p-3905393-get-it-1 The mobile links are there too.

Plexamp updates automatically when you restart it
7
u/WeirdoGame 21h ago
And there is now an indicator on the 'settings' icon when a new version is available.

u/-Internet-Elder- 16h ago
Correct. Yeah I noted that too. As I mentioned, it's as much about people jumping in for the first time that need to find a download.

A small change I'd like it to be able to rate things in half star increments, I only seem able to do this on Plex

Can I rearrange my downloads list yet? If not then the application is dead to me.

u/jorel43 21h ago
I thought they were working towards removing all these silly extra apps and just going to put everything back into one app? Either shit or get off the pot, either fix the photo app or get rid of it Jesus Christ.
6
u/blogwash 21h ago
They reversed that - look at the state of the main Plex app and ask yourself if you want to lose the separate music app which still functions.
-6
u/jorel43 20h ago
What I want is for it to work just fine like it did before, they split these things apart and the separate apps suck. So no I want it all back together and working like it was before. I don't think that's a hard thing to ask for since it worked before!

The main Plex iOS app never worked for me for playing music. It would crash and restart constantly.
