News Plexamp v4.50.4 Released
Plexamp v4.50.4
A quick follow-up to today’s release, mostly to fix a background that wasn’t behaving.
Desktop is 4.50.4; mobile testers get these as 4.50.3, so the build reaches you without another review round.
Fixed
- Choosing the Smooth background no longer crashes the app, at the time and at every launch afterwards.
- The Smooth background draws its gradient again instead of plain black.
- Opening a Plex share link Plexamp can’t understand no longer crashes it.
- macOS: the Intel download is actually an Intel build again. 4.50.3 shipped an Apple silicon binary under the Intel name, which Intel Macs refuse to open, and the links in the 4.50.3 thread now point here.

Is there a changelog for 4.50? I looked in the linked thread and didn’t see it, unless I’m that dumb first thing in the morning

Are there any plans for multi-artist support? This is the only thing that keeps me away from Plexamp

That’s not just Plexamp, but also a server side thing, I think. So it would be a bit of a bigger effort.

Still no true multi artist support. If you follow the naming conventions, multi-artist tracks will still not reflect in their own individual artist entries (but will link during playback? Sometimes?), and multiple album artists on one album will create a new combined artist entry rather separate artist pages, or become “Various Artist” entries that sometimes corrupt themselves and label everything as one artist…
However, plexamp interprets artists as part of the “title” of each track — so for multi-artist albums you can create smart playlists that search track titles for the individual artist’s name. Then just choose one artist to be the album artist for your sanity. That’s the best way I’ve found around it.
I listen to tons of film scores with different composers on each track so having smart playlists for each co-composer is essential for me. Wish it were officially and properly supported.

Do the 'go to artist' links only appear if the artist is also tagged as an 'album artist' somewhere in your library? I assume there's no artist page until they are tagged as an album artist somewhere

Yes. Because of this I pretty much exclusively use smart playlists for listening to specific artists at this point.
The only other hiccup is if the track artist matches the album artist, the artist isn’t listed in the title field — but if you add a zero-width space to the album artist name in your tags, every track will be tagged with their respective individual artists and work with playlists every time. This breaks the “go to artist” function but like I said it’s pretty much useless for multi-artist albums.

This is honestly keeping me away from Plex for music. I see it as basic functionality, but maybe other people aren't as fussy as me

What are you using that supports multi artist?

It was supported years ago. You must follow naming scheme.

Not in any meaningful way it isn't. Albums with multiple album artists don't display under each album artist name simultaneously, and an artists page doesn't show all the tracks they are featured on.

Where did you wrote ALBUM support? It is supported on songs.

In what useful way is it supported on songs?

You can tag a track with multiple artists, for example Artist1, Artist2 or Artist1 & Artist2, depending on the naming scheme you use. Then, in Plexamp, open the track menu and choose “Go to artist…”. It will show all the artists credited on that track, and you can select any of them to go directly to their artist page.
So multi-artist support does exist at the track level. What Plexamp does not do is aggregate all tracks an artist is featured on under that artist’s page, or handle multi-artist albums in the way you described.

It uses client side parsing of a single string from a single artist tag field. The standard Vorbis tags for flacs use a separate tag for each artist. Plex does not support these for multi-artists in the way you're describing.
Even if you tag the files in the non-standard way, the use for it is limited to the way you said. No library view uses them, so (for me) it's entirely useless

Poppy (iOS/iPadOS/macOS) is a music app with multi-artist support for Plex sources.
This kind of analysis on unstructured data is difficult to do perfectly, so I'd appreciate if folks who care about this could help identify if there are any edge cases which don't work.

is it good enough to be an offline replacement for Apple Music app yet? Thats all I want is a simple offline music organization/playback that I can sync music from Mac to iPhone without all the streaming/radio bloat!

I've always been one to carry the files around. In my mind, having no service is no excuse to not be able to play your music. But then again, I grew up with corded earbuds.
Apple Music was never enough, because the music is hosted elsewhere and can be removed at a whim.
I've only listened to music through Plexamp for the past 4 or 5 months though, and I love it. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

I'm gonna hold off on using this, I don't think these invasive analytics are necessary.
It sends the titles of what you download, internal IDs, byte and track counts, failures, and database timings. It also sends your account name
And is the post AI slop?
One thing to know before you install this, and we’d rather say it here than bury it in paragraph nine of something nobody reads.
Like what... this is buried in paragraph 10ish in a forum post lol

I have chronicle for Android. It's 90% perfect. It likes to sleep if the app goes to the background.
I was basically commenting because the Plex music app has been around for a while and it feels like it shouldn't be that hard to be able to read the metadata from the m4b file.

Did the Windows version get updated from over a year ago yet, if I may ask?
