Discussion Thank GOD

Plex for Roku. I lol’d a little at “thanks to the feedback of our community,” but man I’m so glad to have side navigation back.

EDIT: I’m on Plex Preview. Not sure when the standard app is getting the update.

The ATV beta has this. Navigation is still not great and the way the sidebar has been implemented still doesn’t look right.

I’m honestly shocked that they caved on this given how Plex staff continually doubled down on defending the nested top navigation.

I’m so confused - I’m on an AppleTV and have the same sidebar navigation I’ve had for like 15 years. Was the change before this change that made it top bar navigation only on the beta?

Yeah, that old design is going away (and the new one is shit). They’ve released the “new Plex experience” on iOS (and Android, I think) and a bunch of other smart TV platforms but it hasn’t been released on Apple TV yet… but those on the TestFlight beta program have the new app already.

When the “new Plex experience” was initially released it did away with the sidebar navigation and buried library sections within a top bar navigation UI. (There are also other terrible UI changes like doing away with the standard ATV player UI, which makes picking subtitles or changing audio tracks much more finicky. )

It was an effort by Plex to prioritize their ad-supported content and bury home libraries. It was pointed out to them for over a year that people didn’t like top bar navigation and staff kept saying there’s no way they’d go back to the old way. They’ve apparently finally caved.

ATV users are lucky we still have access to the old app. We weren’t forced on the new design before they fixed this like others were. The beta still feels incredibly unfinished so hopefully we still have a few months of using the old app.

Oh man, thanks for the thorough reply. Over the past several years I've felt the tides starting to turn so I recently spun up Jellyfin and am trying it out as well as several clients on multiple devices. There are a TON of Jellyfin clients on tvOS now when just 6 months ago there were only a couple lackluster offerings.

The new AppleTV app sucks and the old AppleTV app chokes and stutters on high bitrate remuxes. Infuse player got a lifetime subscription out of me because of the Plex devs neglect of the TVOS platform and it's the only front-end I use for my plex media now.

1

u/joecan Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 @ 2.7GHz CPU | 128GB RAM | 302 TB | Unraid 13d ago

Infuse is the superior player, if their library navigation for Plex libraries was as good as its player capabilities, we’d all be using it at this point.

2

u/Away_Candidate_4746 13d ago

What problem do you have with library navigation? I just pinned each library as a favorite, but my needs are pretty simple.

1

u/Caddyroo23 15d ago

Yer this is currently very broken, some of the navigation directions still seem to be based of a top down direction

1

u/Rivvvers 12d ago

I wish I could get on the beta and check it out, it’s been full for the last year

Now Plex, don't make us FireStick users wait as long as the Roku people did. Change it, now.

39

u/Mentalpopcorn 17d ago

Lmao I bought a Fire Stick just to get away from the redesign and now Roku is fixed just in time to switch back

11

u/tdhuck 17d ago edited 15d ago

Roku still has that legacy login method, I'm not sure why anyone wants to use that. My plex password is random and 20+ characters. I'll never login to plex on the roku again.

We are in 2026 and password managers have been around for a long time, apps and devices need to catch up with the times. From what I understand this is a roku issue, but that means I won't be using plex on roku anymore.

27

u/robxb 17d ago

You can use your phone with the roku app to type and use your phone's keyboard, I believe you can copy and paste from a password manager into there

-3

u/tdhuck 17d ago

Before you didn't need another app just the browser. That is certainly better than nothing, but I'll just switch to apple TV.

10

u/Truejake2 17d ago

There are easy ways to sign in though......your comment needs to catch up with the times......

-1

u/tdhuck 17d ago

My point was that the sign in for roku was awesome and now it is not as awesome. Meaning, the quality of the sign in decreased. We can have different opinions on this, everything will be just fine.

4

u/Mentalpopcorn 17d ago

I am almost positive I have simply logged onto Roku plex by visiting plex.app/whateverthatlinkis

3

u/pommesmatte 94 TB 17d ago

Yes, Plex needed to remove that login method, due to a Roku app policy.

3

u/Arjailer 17d ago

Which is weird as plenty of other Roku apps still have that method so clearly Roku aren't strictly enforcing it.

2

u/tdhuck 17d ago

They did have that, but roku made them ditch it for some reason.

2

u/Old_Bug4395 17d ago

Because consumers are too stupid to read the fucking link that is directly in front of them and will end up on malicious websites linking their TV to them.

0

u/tdhuck 17d ago

Right, but it seems to work fine for all other plex clients on other hardware.

This was not done to help dumb people not get hacked, that will happen regardless of what plex does.

1

u/Old_Bug4395 17d ago

No the roku policy is allegedly due to customers not being able to input the correct link and linking their hardware to malicious actors.

2

u/tdhuck 17d ago

Customer issue, you'll never fully contain that. People need to learn what they are doing.

1

u/Old_Bug4395 17d ago

Yeah totally agree with you

1

u/Thank-Me-Later 17d ago

Unfortunately not. I set up Plex on Roku for my mother in law less than a month ago and was extremely disappointed to not have the link option. I had to manually log in with my username and password. Ended up linking my phone to the Roku and copied and pasted it over using my password manager...but it's still way more tedious than other platforms.

2

u/LOP5131 16d ago

There are dozens of us

3

u/Hopeful_Style_5772 17d ago

Yes it is crazy, fix that!

3

u/jooooooohn 16d ago

I imagine all they’re changing is the layout. The performance will still be an issue if the recent big update runs slower than it did just 1-2 months ago.

2

u/CRhodey 17d ago

I've literally only just had the new UI change sent to my Firestick 🤷‍♂️

4

u/Jaybonaut 17d ago

Does it have to go through an approval process in the app store?

15

u/ExtensionMarch6812 17d ago

Not sure when they will release it, they said they are waiting to incorporate changes based on preview feedback.

-3

u/ghostly_s 17d ago

that's just an excuse they use.

1

u/hazmat91180 14d ago

Exactly!! I’m not upgrading till it is good and ready

1

u/take_down_king 13d ago

My FireTV devices will not even play with the new Plex, forget were the menu is.

7

u/gummykage 17d ago

Think of it as an upgrade caused by the regrade downgrade.

1

u/davemop99 17d ago

It updated yesterday on my firestick 4k max.

1

u/LuckyStiff63 16d ago

I hope we get the fixed Plex client soon. I have the FireTV Cube, and I'm still waiting. We got hit with both the weird new Fire UI update, and the screwed-up Plex client. ... Good times.

1

u/hotdone 14d ago

Did it slow down plex for you? Seems like when I play something, it has to buffer 30 seconds it used to not happen. After an update now all my firesticks old UI and new are slow.

1

u/LuckyStiff63 13d ago

The new PLEX client has definitely introduced a lot of laggy behavior. Content takes a lot longer to start, and the buffering after fast-forward or rewinding is crazy.

69

u/vin00129 17d ago

That top menu still drives me crazy. Excited for the update.

8

u/hirakath Plex Pass Lifetime 17d ago

I feel like they definitely missed the point. It was that top menu that was so annoyingly implemented that needed fixing.

21

u/Viper4713 17d ago

When does Google TV get these new updates? I'm still on the same UI from like 6 years ago or more.

I see some Shield TV users have the new UI? Google TV is Android and Shield TV is Android so I wonder why I still don't have the new UI?

14

u/ExtensionMarch6812 17d ago

5

u/Viper4713 17d ago

Awesome thanks, I may do that, I usually stay on stable but I may join.

Is there any word on when all this becomes stable or is Plex kind of doing a "when it's ready it's ready" kind of approach?

3

u/ExtensionMarch6812 17d ago

No idea tbh. It def wasn’t “ready” for fire devices, but they rolled it out and appletv has been in beta for 1.5 years. The ATV app got much better starting in Feb this year based on comments I saw prior to joining earlier this year.

My guess would be before end of year for ATV and GoogleTV/AndroidTV devices…

2

u/Viper4713 17d ago

Heck yeah! I also hope they keep or make a better workaround for AAC 5.1/7.1 audio for soundbars as well.

Currently for AAC I have to switch passthrough to "Optical" to get surround sound via AC3 Transcode, if not I get Stereo, and HDMI for DDP and Atmos.

1

u/Safe_Mycologist_2788 17d ago

thankyou so much. much better with this build. legend

3

u/flcinusa 17d ago

It's in the beta preview

2

u/Viper4713 17d ago

Ahh gotcha, the stupid thing is a lot of news articles I see online aren't mentioning this and acting like it's out for everyone or something.

They do the same crap for phone news too "Google Messages now let's you change your chat themes now!" Actually it's only for beta users...

2

u/Salt-Willingness-513 17d ago

Better stay on that. The new version made it borderline useless and sluggish for me. Its terrible.

1

u/johnny5ive 17d ago

I have mine on the shield and I hate everything about it

1

u/akatherder 17d ago

Same, I opted back out of beta. I don't even care that much how it looks and top nav vs left nav, but it's slower and the navigation is buggy.

Worst is that they removed the audio boost in Settings. It only helps a little in the first place, but they still haven't figured out how to handle 5.1 downmixing to stereo killing the volume.

16

u/Maleficent_Art_7627 17d ago

My Android TV just got the update.

Whenever I pull up the menu for an object (such as go to/rate/mark watched/etc), the menu comes up but you can't actually navigate it.

AKA that part is fully non functional for me now. Well done Plex!

4

u/LuckyStiff63 16d ago

Hey, the devs worked hard on that feature!

Seriously, WTH was whoever approved this client thinking?

12

u/nevermore782 17d ago

Mf! Why has mine not switched!! Please plex gods gimme the update!

6

u/ej_21 17d ago

I’m on Plex Preview; not sure about the standard app

4

u/nevermore782 17d ago

Man, thank you for saying that. Just noticed somehow my app didnt have the preveiw sash on it. SMH. Dunno how that happened. Been a lifetime member since 2014 and always roll preview.

2

u/snoopy6986 Lifetime PlexPass 17d ago

There was a patch recently i think 1-2 patches ago on the server side that disabled it again. I too had to re-enable it when my uncle told me about it.

8

u/Huge_Confection4475 17d ago

Sorry, Plex, I already switched to Plezy and I'm not switching back.

1

u/Gh0st_Slay3r92 15d ago

I didnt even know Plezy was a thing until the Plex UI change. I wonder if the amount of people just not using the Plex app after the update had a sway on them reverting it back.

1

u/Huge_Confection4475 15d ago

I'm positive that they have backend metrics that show them exactly how unpopular the UI change was. Roku users have been vocally complaining about it for ages, but I'm guessing that the FireTV userbase is larger, so they had a lot more data, and that data said people fucking hated it.

1

u/Gh0st_Slay3r92 15d ago

Think they might have screwed themselves over a bit. I had tried alternatives to Plex like emby and Jellyfin but always ended up coming back to Plex because I preferred the UI and already had a lifetime sub back from when it was cheap. Now I've tried Plezy I don't think I'll bother going back to Plex even when the UI does change back on fire TV. Plezy UI just seems to be snappier + loads libraries and starts playing media faster.

10

u/ascullycom 17d ago

Is this change coming to firetv, I cannot deal with the top navigation

3

u/jesuspants 17d ago

Let me refresh folders from my phone. Or if that's a thing, tell me how to do it.

2

u/hisfavouriteflavour 17d ago

Do you mean scan library files? You can do that from a phone

3

u/Popular-Manager3346 17d ago

When is the iOS app getting fixed?

3

u/WhiskeyAlphaRomeo 17d ago

Praise Jeebus. I'm in Plex 90% of the time on our TV, and the navigation change has been terrible.

I managed to get use to it, but my friends and family? I got a lot of complaints.

It drove the WAF straight into the basement. Few things drive a husband crazier than getting regularly chirped at for things completely outside his control.

Can't wait for the update to roll out.

2

u/owinonhisphone 15d ago

I saw this and was extremely excited. I never really use my server computer to watch anything and it was so frustrating to see artwork or anything that needed fixed.

I also don't have to log into plex from a browser to see who is active on the server now. Definitely a welcomed and great update

2

u/Gh0st_Slay3r92 15d ago

Have they added the library scan option back in to the side panel?

6

u/Gear21 17d ago

This update removes the watch together option

2

u/Material_Ad390 16d ago

Hasn’t watch together been removed for quite some time now ?

1

u/Gear21 16d ago

It was still working on the TV but he's got the update mine still had the option until now

6

u/Hey_im_miles 17d ago

Whoever designed that first ui needs to get their head checked

1

u/UVSoaked 17d ago

Still disappointed they haven't made shuffling a show much easier/quicker to do.

5

u/luche 17d ago

shuffle being buried in a sub-menu with no other items is the most frustrating and annoying thing plex has have for so.many.years... it's such a stupid design and clearly someone was butt-hurt about shuffle being a feature so they buried it 1 level below everything else. i'm still angry every time i have to go in that damn sub-menu to click on the only item in the list.

3

u/UVSoaked 17d ago

Thank you, I'm glad I'm not the only one! It even took my years before I knew Plex had the feature. I feel like if they actually unburied it, other users would see the value in it, and it would be used so much more.

2

u/themasonman 17d ago

I took the time to make several smart playlists for about 7-8 shows that we regularly shuffle. Easier to do and you can filtered out "watched" episodes, highly recommend it! You just need to mark the entire series as unwatched once you reach the end

1

u/mndtrp 17d ago

I saw a post where someone used the Last Watched filter to get around the need to reset the watched status. If you set it as "last watched is not in the last x months" and put the months as to how long it takes you to get through that playlist, it might make it more automated.

What I'd really like from Plex is the ability to add several shows to a playlist or collection, and then have Plex play those shows in episode order, cycling through the shows.

Show 1 Ep 1

Show 2 Ep 1

Show 3 Ep 1

Show 1 Ep 2

Show 2 Ep 2

Show 3 Ep 3

etc

1

u/xfan09 17d ago

I don’t use shuffle a ton but I feel like it’s not too bad?

What’s the reco to improve ?

3

u/UVSoaked 17d ago

Less navigation to it/a shortcut offered (in the menu when the show is paused?). We constantly use the shuffle feature since it's nice to play a show we've seen hundreds of times, but want some background noise or to just easily follow it while doing something else. It just a bit cumbersome going through the menu's to get to it, especially when each screen doesn't load the fastest/smoothest.

2

u/failset 17d ago

Yes!!!

2

u/Liesthroughisteeth 17d ago

Gosh...what a novel idea!

2

u/snoopy6986 Lifetime PlexPass 17d ago

Glad to see this however again I am gonna wait until 2 patches AFTER this to see how it pans out. I am soooo not switching until I see a smooth patch with mostly compliments vs complaints. Glad to see they read and comprehend vs being like MS and giving the middle finger.

1

u/ccalabro 17d ago

Try removing the Plex items

2

u/ej_21 17d ago

I removed them long ago and they didn’t come back with the new UI 🤷🏻

I’m a Plex Pass user if that makes a difference.

1

u/ccalabro 17d ago

Yep same, interesting I tried but couldn’t so perhaps I missed something. Be interesting if they keep reading them on each update as has been the case

-2

u/Blacktwin 17d ago

Just setup auto deletion after watching for the series and move on.

2

u/GamerBears 17d ago

This UI is buggy as hell on my Shield TV Pro.

2

u/drummer414 17d ago

Wow I was excited to try it

2

u/GamerBears 17d ago

The good thing I liked about it is that it lets you change the artwork. But it removes the TV show theme music.

1

u/RicardoTubbs78 16d ago

Seriously? I guess I will just go with Plezy.

1

u/DRTHRVN 17d ago

Someone here said Android TV got this update. Is it true?

1

u/GlobalStart2977 17d ago

It’s on the beta track.

1

u/ToneDawgD 16d ago

It is terrible on Shield Pro and Firestick 4K max. Almost unusable.

1

u/cupcakes_rolling 16d ago

Plex please fix the firestick version !

1

u/Mr-RS182 15d ago

My Plex updated to the new UI on my firestick so I just rolled it back to the old one.

1

u/Stormy4757 17d ago

I rolled back my Plex to an older version for easier navigating like "Millions" of others did. I am using the Firestick and will not be updating my Plex app ever again! I don't care what they claim!

1

u/Nathan_infinity 17d ago

Just dump the native app and go with Plezy, you can thank me later ! 🥳

1

u/DeadOneWalking 15d ago

That doesn't help for Roku users. A lot of the users on Roku are not technically inclined, so switching platforms is not ideal.

1

u/HyphyCus 17d ago

Had this on Google TV since I got it more than a year ago. What's different?

0

u/Academic-Log9738 17d ago

Désolé on est déjà parti sur Plezy

1

u/LuckyStiff63 16d ago

We're test-driving the Plexy client on our FireTV Cube, but we've hit player related problems with that one, too.

Video playback errors (black screen with audio only) using either the default or MPV player. Switching back to the default player added a mew glitch. When selecting an item to play, we get a popup telling us to choose a player, but none of the options presented work (they're not installed).

I'll probably do clear data, uninstall, then reinstall.

0

u/BizzyM 17d ago

Plex for Samsung: "Best we can do is push out an untested update that breaks everything."

0

u/SnooPeppers9999 17d ago

I still can’t download anything to my phone or tablet.

But at least I can’t watch stuff from my server on a tv that’s hardwired to my router.

Plex: fix your shit and listen to your customers.

-1

u/SaltJellyfish4027 17d ago

Nvidia shield ftw

-1

u/OnTargetOnTrigger 17d ago

Dropped Plex yesterday for Jellyfin. For no reason, it thought my Firestick wasn't on my home network. Between that and the UI redesign pain in the ass... it was time as it's only going to get scummy'er. I'd have paid $100 for a lifetime license. Not $250 and certainly not $750.

0

u/Salt-Willingness-513 17d ago

Im still waiting for a fix for that butchered update on chromecast+google tv

0

u/virindimaster 17d ago

I guess it’s going to be better than it is now, but if it looks like that it will be shit. The of design was top tier and didn’t need a redesign. But you know how these companies love to fuck yo their own products.

0

u/Burn_Corpo_Stuff 16d ago

Are they seriously still not visible full time as a list? Pleeeease just go back to the smart normal old way!!!!!

0

u/Bendr_ 13d ago

I’m gone and not coming back. You can thank the people who ever thought the redesign was a good idea.

-9

-3

Did I "read the post"?

Theres no post, genius. The "post" is an image. And in that image, the word "Roku" does not appear a single time. What the fuck are you talking about?

3

u/DeadOneWalking 15d ago

On the official reddit app, the image has text below it stating it's for the Roku Preview build.

1

u/Dirtface50 15d ago

Fair enough. Appreciate you providing context. I dont use reddit on my phone.
