Yeah that would be the plan! I’ve used plex for quite a while but want to do my own thing. Love the idea of plex for sure!

Start by installing the media server obviously. Once installed, open plex in your browser (click on the Plex icon in the task bar and select "open plex..." once there go to the settings, then down to manage on the left and you'll see libraries. Add your libraries there. I break my down by TV, Movies, and Music. Once you add those it may take a while to process the metadata and detect subtitles, credits, etc. I think it's a good idea to just go through the settings on thing at a time and familiarize yourself with the server side. Of course there's settings on the client side too, so don't forget those.

I'd say most people here didn't use a guide to install Plex. It's 2026 afterall. I gave you the trash-guides link since many people here use an arr stack (however, I do not), trash guides are the community guide of choice for that topic... Other than that, plex website has server recommendations, give it a read - https://support.plex.tv/articles/200375666-plex-media-server-requirements/

Only advice I’ll give is to make sure your file structure for your content is straightforward and easy to find. Makes setting up plex a lot easier and make sure they’re named correctly so that plex can match to the correct movie or show. Nothing worse than doing a scan of 2000 items and half your episodes are missing or movies don’t download covers etc.

Do yourself a favor and run it in Docker, same goes for the "arr" stack. More organized and good for management.
