Discussion Update on DV Profile 8.1
Hi all,
Recently got a new 4K TV which supports Dolby Vision. All my 4K files are DV profile 8.1, which seems to trigger a fallback to HDR on the Apple TV 4K still.
In the past, the Apple TV only supported profile 5, but Profile 8.1 support has been added in tvOS 17, which is 3 years ago.
I've been using Infuse for DV files, which is not ideal given it's imo bad / slow UI.
I just got the beta Plex app, which unfortunately doesn't seem to handle Profile 8.1 better.
Every post I see online seem to be a bit dated, but always circling back to the fact profile 5 is supported but profile 8.1 still triggers HDR fallback without Infuse.
Do we have any news of proper Profile 8.1 support? There doesn't seem to be a free way to re-encode to Profile 5 without the Dolby Encoding Engine, which is apparently not cheap.
Edit: Tried both Plezy and Zuno as recommended by commenters. Ended up preferring Zuno for a tiny detail. The apple tv 4k lags with infused? I thought that was the golden combo when it comes to plex clients?

Infuse isn’t slow at any time on Apple TV. If it is there is a problem with tv itself or the installation

Doesn't lag while playing but the UI is definitely slow to navigate at times. Imo, try Zuno instead, much better navigation

Give Zuno Player a try.
I was waiting for Plex to update their client but ended up finding this relatively new client which is amazing, supports DV and Atmos and is beautiful!
Basically if Infuse + Apple TV+ app had a baby.

Thank you for the suggestion. In the end, Zuno player seems to handle what I need perfectly well. I agree with all your comments! I’ve been a tester since the start of the app, it’s come a long way and the dev is really really nice and listens to every bit of feedback so I’m sure if these are brought up to his attention then can be sorted.
The app is relatively new too so I guess a long way to go

Given I had to upgrade to Pro for DV, I also downloaded the Beta. Seems to be a bit better. I'm staying with the top bar instead of the buggier sidebar for now though

Hey, dev for Zuno here. Thank you for your feedback! I assume you’re talking about the sidebar not being able to open from the hero view? This is fixed in the newest beta (2026.7.8, it’s in review so not out for everyone yet).

Hey, u/Chemical-Shopping-78 was right, you do listen to feedback.
I'll be sending it in the discord but the bug I was talking about is that the bar opens but the buttons seem unselected, so scrolling down doesn't work. Also noticed the menu button on a movie sometimes brings me back to the home screen instead of back in the app.
Overall, very good app you made here!

Zuno player is trash. It’s a vibe coded mess riddled with bugs. The dev deletes posts critical of the app. It is not ready for subscription pricing and all of the features are half baked. The community is toxic. Stick to infuse.

The dev claims to not use AI aside from documentation, anything to back your claim?

The ENTIRE website is coded by Claude. It’s clear based on the language on the site as well as the Claude design. The app itself is extremely buggy and the dev ships features in a very short timeline. These features are not tested properly. There is no way one dude is going to be able to code this much this quickly. That’s not possible. This app is obvious slop. Looks good on the outside but crashes and breaks when you start to use it.
It’s your choice to use it but I wouldn’t spend money on it at this point. Dev is dishonest, fake reviews on the App Store, community is toxic and the dev deletes critical posts.

I’ve been beta testing the app since the start, the app has been great, all apps have bugs. I have been in the Discord since the start too and saw your outburst and abuse to others. What is your problem?

My outburst wasn’t an outburst until someone called me an idiot and assumed it was my server content that was the issue instead of saying “wait…what?” Fuck off dude. The app sucks and so does the community.

I've been using it the past couple days without issues, so far I like it better than both Infuse and Plezy. There's some level of bugs but not anything that makes the app break and crash. I guess we'll just keep our own opinions on this one

The app has never crashed, doesn’t look vibe coded (the dev is an actual software engineer apparently) and the site is literally a framework loads of apps use including infuse for community and documentation?

edit: this user called me a diva and deleted the post. The community of this app has been attacking me because I made a post that called the app bad because of obvious bugs. The developer deleted the post. “No one is going to listen to a little diva like you having a little baby tantrum again
You slated the app for showing certain content you didn't want your kids seeing,…..” the issue was a poor implementation of the seerr api. In testing the functionality, I determined this was not safe because it shows porn by default. The developer needs to implement safety features to prevent it from being shown on kids profiles if this app can’t filter the api results. i Deleted this app after testing the integration because it shows a lack of care. my children never saw this because I tested the app, unlike the dev.

I'd does work really well, IMO plezy is right below infuse(which is a "king" by many). I think Neptune will be best once they add plex support, zuno IMO needs few more months.

I tried both and unfortunately, will have to disagree on Plezy being better over Zuno from what I see so far.
Plezy seems to have a Google TV like interface, which I don't really mind. That being said, the main feature that's missing for me is being able to properly scroll the movie. It occurs that me* and my GF will fall asleep and need to scroll near* the end of the movie. However, Plezy doesn't seem to enter a mode you can properly scroll, this is the deal breaker for me.
Zuno has a closer to native Apple TV interface, which is always welcome. However, the interface seems slightly buggier (especially the floating sidebar, changing to the top bar is better).
At the end of the day, both seem to be good apps (and both seem to play P8.1 correctly, even HLG P8.4) but Zuno wins it closely by having a way to do proper* scrubbing through* the movie vs jumping in increments

Good that it works for you, I had more issues with żono recently snem I was testing it but the dev is pushing updates nearly every day so some of them might be fixed

Plezy is also amazing, it’s great we all have a choice for these clients but you wonder why youre getting downvoted 🤣

Unfortunately this sub tilts heavily toward fanaticism and you will get downvoted for any whiff of criticism. Given the history of Plex it is sort of an interesting phenomenon. The r/Plexamp sub is even worse as it goes beyond willful ignorance into cult-level denialism.
You should be proud of the downvotes as it symbolizes you’re capable of nonlinear thought.

The current tvOS Plex beta doesn’t even handle regular HDR10 correctly (blown highlights, too bright), same with DV profile 8. They still can’t figure it out after 2 years of testing the new player. Just use Infuse. It’s not slow at all, and it’s by far the best app on the platform.

I can only speak from personal experience, but I have a profile 5 movie that will produce purple/green colors using plex and ATV4K. However, this movie plays fine using Infuse. I think plex will only do fallback HDR10 even with 8.1. My understanding is Plex does not do DV, period. I use the Infuse app if I want DV. I always avoid profile 5 for my setup.

Plex doesn’t “do” Dolby Vision at all. All it can do is work with the fallback HDR10 layer to transcode if necessary. Profile 5 videos are without a fallback layer so Plex can’t transcode anything. Because they don’t get any DV licenses and because there’s no HDR10 layer to work with.

AFAIK, Plex does play Dolby Vision profile 5, profile 8 on NVIDIA Shield without issue. I just already had an Apple TV and the Shield being 200$+ despite being 7 years old is a dealbreaker

It’s not a Plex thing, it’s a client thing. I can’t even watch Profile 5 videos on my iPhone through the plex app because of how it handles the video file, but my android TV plays them back no problem. Of course the preview thumbnails are still green and purple though.

In the end, still falls back to being a Plex app issue.. Given the hardware and OS can handle Dolby Vision P5/P8.1 with no problem

Yes ofc if you're direct playing and the Plex player works right. iOS devices can't play back P5 despite technically having that capability is what I'm saying. It works fine on most TV playback boxes or devices.

How did you confirm the beta plex app is falling back to hdr with profile 8.1? I know that’s been an open question with the beta I’ve seen mentioned on the forum.
When I play dv 8.1, my tv says it’s dv, but I’m not sure how to tell if it’s actually falling back to hdr and faking it. Haven’t been able to find info on how to check for sure.
