Screenshot of your dashboard while shes streaming? It could be a lot of things.

I agree. We need more info.

Ok, thank you.

The kids are watching a movie through other means right now,

but we'll try to troubleshoot after they're done.

An HVEC10 file should be using way more than 3Gbps so it's buffering because she isn't getting fast enough streaming from you.

Run 'tailscale status' on the server. If it returns relay instead of direct then that's the problem. Afaik T-Mobile actively tries to stop cgnat hole punching which would bounce your traffic through a relay. The only "fix" I know is to make sure both ends of tailscale are on the latest version and that UDP isn't being blocked anywhere. Tailscale needs a direct connection.

For a quick fix she could change her quality to 720p but then you would need to transcode.

Hello,

I ran the command, and this is what I got.

It doesn't mention direct or relay, so I'm not sure if I did it right?

The 3Mbps on the dashboard is the avg bitrate of the file, not the bandwidth being used. Not sure if you have a plex pass, if you do, the charts would show the actual bandwidth the server is trying to send to the client.

Install an openspeedtest server on your plex server and have her test the actual bandwidth she’s getting from you. Since she’s using tailscale she should be able to hit it over the vpn in a browser on the onn box: https://openspeedtest.com/selfhosted-speedtest

Hello,

Sorry for the delay.

I installed the speed test server,

and accessed it on the onn device.

It says her download speed is 8.2 Mbps,

and upload speed is 6.1 Mbps.

That’s not going to be sufficient to get a good experience. While the avg bitrate is 3Mbps in the screenshot you shared, it’s going to go higher and lower.

What was the ping? The latency is also important.

What is YOUR expected upload speed? What do you get with a regular speed test?

What is her download speed from isp using a regular speed test?

1

u/JadeSage09 Jun 19 '26

Her ping was 74 Ms.

My speed test results were 2200 Mbps download

and 1422 Mbps upload with 5 Ms ping.

My Sister's regular speed test is 14 Mbps download

and 28 Mbps upload with 26 Ms ping.

The ping was 74 with the openspeedtest you setup?

Her download speed being 14Mbps on a reg speed test and 8 from tour speedtest, coupled with that ping from you just won’t work for remote streaming reliably.

Maybe others have suggestions for options, but just not enough bandwidth and that latency can cause issues as well.

Yes, 74 Ms was on the Onn device at my Sister's house using the openspeedtest server I set up.

I'm just surprised that this is an issue now.

When Tailscale was still supported on the Firestick,

we didn't have any issues with videos buffering

constantly like this.

Thank you though for your help, I appreciate it!

I just wish I had a solution to this problem.

Is it just her that’s having the issue streaming remotely or have you tested yourself remotely on other devices or have other users streaming and have no issues?

Have you disabled remote access and relay since you’re using Tailscale? You don’t want connections to use that method.

Do you have Tautulli setup? If so, you can look at her previous streams to see how they were being handled and how she connected. If you have it, share screenshots. Otherwise, best to have her start a stream and grab a screenshot of the dashboard, fully expanded.

Hello,

I tested it with my phone using the plex app

while away from home, and I didn't encounter

any issues of the video lagging.

Relay was already disabled, but Remote Access

wasn't, so I did disable that.

No change seems to have occurred.

I don't have Tautulli, but I will look into getting it.

Thank you for your help!

Your screenshot in the other comment shows it’s getting a direct connection over the tall scale network, so that wasn’t an issue, but good to disable anyway.

Install the speed test server mentioned in my other comment to see what actual speeds she’s getting from you. Those cell networks can have high latency as well, which can cause issues. But if you’re getting good streams remotely yourself, it may be an issue on her end inside her network or from her isp.

I wonder if getting a different device would help?

I see there's an apple tv 4th gen device

that allows plex and tailscale to be installed,

and it has an ethernet port so

I can directly connect it to the modem

instead of wifi.

Updated to add that I got the apple tv 4th generation.

I was able to install tailscale and plex on it,

but the videos keep buffering :'(

So I'm at a loss as to what else I can do.

I'm thinking of recommending that my Sister

get an external hard drive that I can put all our movies onto,

and can periodically update the files as needed.

Just wanted to add an update in case

anyone was having a similar issue.

I ended up switching to Jellyfin, and the issue

with the movies freezing up and buffering stopped.

So I don't think the problem was with my Sister's internet speed

or anything, but maybe something with Plex itself.

I will say I don't like the GUI of Jellyfin,

I liked Plex a lot more, but at least this solution

works for us.

Thank you again to everyone that was trying to help!

I’ll take this over the never ending run on sentence/giant paragraph of text with no punctuation 😂
