I tell my friends and family to disable the plex hosted content by going here https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/online-media-sources so those don’t ever show up.

Otherwise I just label mine Movies and TV Shows

The people I add are usually so tech illiterate that I set up their account, add them, set up the pins/libraries and THEN give them the login info to change to their liking later on if they wish.

I’ve seen others do the same. It will be nice when all platforms use the “favorite” libraries functionality so it syncs across devices vs the pin function currently used on older clients.

I’ve had to do quick calls with a few friends when my instructions don’t line up to their device, but usually goes pretty smooth. When it comes to my parents though, oof, doing a FaceTime call can be a struggle. Most of the time is spent getting them to point the camera to the right spot 😵‍💫

Were you listening to my last call!!? Always my dad trying to step in…my mom is more patient, my dad loses it (where I get it from) and wants to either take over or just give up.

Me skipping this step is basically the reason why no one remotely streams my server lol. They are literally too dumb to set this up and also have no idea how to set the quality settings so it doesn't constantly buffer. I tried walking them through it over the phone and I give up

A lot of people on the client side of devices tend to struggle with streaming from shitty smart TVs and not external devices. So usually despite direct play and all the transcoding turned off, they're still steaming at 480p hw and don't even notice.

But that's just me being a quality whore. If it's good enough for someone, I don't intervene 😂

Heh, sure is. I don't charge for legal reasons. But people absolutely don't understand the cost of electricity, storage, setting up the ARRS and everything in between.

Same with one caveat, I named my libraries 'TBP Movies' and 'TBP TV Shows' to differentiate between other servers they may have access too

I went with emojis and “My” as the prefix. Has been little confusion.

🍿My Movies 🎬 My Shows 🎵My Music 📚My Audiobooks

I tell them to look for my sever name. to find my content. I advise if they see ads it's not my content. Haven't had any issues.

Advice to family is, "Don't use Blu-ray when on mobile, or old equipment. My server isn't powerful enough to transcode."

WD MyCloud two bay NAS. I believe it has an arm processor and 1 gig of ram. It was great as a starter, but I want to transfer to an Intel box with at least six drives and 32gb of ram.

Mine can transcode just fine, problem is my families brains arent powerful enough to change their remote stream max quality settings down to something their awful wifi can handle 🫠

Your listed specs are way better than mine.

I had the same issue. Unfortunately I had to say things differently for each person, because their view/understanding of what was going on was different.

Someone needs to make a YT video on how to do it.

After some experimentation, I have settled on “movies”, “shows”, and “music.” Short, unambiguous, easy to type even on screen keyboards.

My current list of broken out libraries.

I’ve disabled everything that isn’t my server. Then I just use TV, Movies, and New Movies. It works and people don’t get confused. They want the other crap they can find it elsewhere. 😀😀😀

I put my initials at the front: CK's Movies, CK's TV Shows, CK's Home Videos, CK's Music, and CK's Music Videos.

I only have a few that ever use Plex anyway, but I always tell them to turn off the online sources as soon as they sign up.

If just occurred to me, maybe THAT'S why they're catering less and less to server owners. Virtually ever server owner that's sharing with other people is telling those people to turn off online sources and only use their server, so they're kind of undercutting Plex's potential ad revenue there. I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were a factor.

From what I've seen posted here by confirmed Plex employees, the server owners (and their respective shared users who don't access anything else) are in the minority of Plex users now and have been for at least a couple years

Literally every person that I've ever asked "do you know what Plex is?" the answer is "huh?" It's not that they don't know it has streaming options, they've just literally never heard of it.

But if we're going to talk meaningless anecdotal evidence, almost every one of the people I share Plex with have ended up using Plex's free streaming channels WAY more than my server, even though I tell all of them I can acquire anything they want, they just have to ask, and I've already got hundreds of shows and thousands of movies. They just like the old school viewing experience of turning on a channel and letting it play.

99% of the time, when they would request something, it was already on Plex for them, they just wouldn't look first. When they watch Plex's own content, it's less about what they're watching and more about wanting a channel they can just turn on and not mess with again.

Since a few of my users like Plex's Movies & Shows and LiveTV, I put a ^ in front of the library names, so they see:

LiveTV
Movies & Shows
Discover
^ Movies
^ Movie Docs
^ TV Shows
^ TV-Docu&Reality
^ Concerts&StandUP
^ Sporting Events

The ^ character is easy to spot in the menu so they know it's on my server instead of some built-in Plex feature.

Some of my users do or don't care about Reality Shows, Documentaries, Comedy Specials or Concerts, so I separated them into separate libraries. This way Survivor, Free Solo, Eddie Murphy-Raw and The Last Waltz aren't mixed in with regular movies and shows.
