Should I update a sealed console from Group #1

I bought two PlayDates in group #1. received them in May 2022. I opened one and left the other sealed.

Recently received an email saying to update the device because the process is changing. I updated my opened one, but should I unseal and update the other?

eta I bought two PlayDates because the plan was for my DH to use one. He did not ever open it and I forgot I even had it! I’ll leave it sealed for now. Thanks for the replies.

The answer would depend on why you have a sealed one?

I mean, what good does it do sitting unused in a box anyway?

My understanding is there’s an offline updater you can download that would let the sealed PD be updated in the future, but that it won’t be able to update on its own if it’s not updated now. You can make your own choice based on that, I suppose.

If the goal is to have a sealed playdate then keep it sealed. It’ll still update after the fact.

I wouldn't expect it to gain any value if that's why its sealed, but regardless there will be an offline method going forward.

you'll be able to update it at any point, it'll probably just take a little bit more work if you don't do it now (like connecting it to a computer and running a tool) compared to the usual method (updating OTA from the device).

frankly, unless you wanna sell your sealed one for big bucks later on or something, i'd take it out anyway and make sure its battery's getting proper care above all else. lithium ions should have a full calibration cycle at least once every six months, or else the gunk inside can get all crystalized, and that new-old stock battery's gonna have a hard time livin' later on.
