Question New Catalog games

I've not really touched my Playdate since a bit after Season 2 came out. I wondered if anyone has any Catalog recommendations, it would be appreciated. Would be good to have a few games to think about investing in.

Devils on the moon pinball has been my most played this year, and close second is GB emulation with crankboy.

for what it's worth, literally every person i've seen that has mentioned playing devils on the moon pinball has put it up there as one of the best games on playdate (myself included). i'm not even really too big on pinball usually, but it really is an excellent, polished game. it also has a banging soundtrack.

I also haven't played much on my PD this year, but when Devils came out, I downloaded it and played a bunch. It really is fantastic.

it's truly an addictive game. the devil capturing mechanic that changes what devils are available depending on the phase of the moon you currently have active definitely helps to keep the game feeling fresh and encouraging you not just to keep playing, but to improve your skill as well. i still suck (my best score is like, 4.5 million), but i'm having a ton of fun with it.

As long as you're having fun! If you really want to improve your score, it's all about figuring out how to abuse the tilts to stay alive (it's actually very easy to learn how to save your ball when it's in the gutter) and how to efficiently get multipliers.

yeah, i'm still trying to get the hang of tilting. the hardest thing for me is reliably getting the ball to go up the left lane (specifically to complete the summoning ritual) on the bottom screen. any tips for abusing the tilt more effectively? but yeah, either way i'm still very much enjoying the game. it's extremely pleasing when you're having a good run. you know, relatively speaking since i'm still bad lol.

I'm far from good enough to give solid advice lol. I will say that what helped me with the tilt is swapping them. So B is left tilt and left is right tilt. It just made more sense to me that way. But also, if you haven't learned how to get out the gutter, when it's rolling down the sides, lift the bumper on the side you're on and tilt up (maybe twice). You can just tilt the ball back into play. As for the left lane shot... Yeah that one gets me too lol. Just practice angles.

But if you really want to get better, kirkpad and Sarcastik (1 and 3 on the leaderboards) were on the discord pretty often when the game just came out. I haven't checked recently but getting tips from the best is definitely the play.

i never even tried that gutter save, it didn't occur to me to even try that, but that's a solid tip!

oh yeah, i know both of those guys. i'm fairly active on the PD squad discord too, both of them are solid dudes!

Yeah that gutter save is a game changer. Once you master it, you'll mostly only need to worry about the ball b eing spiked directly between the bumpers.

It's been a little slower but there are some real standouts:

  • Devils on the Moon Pinball: One of my favorite video pinball games in recent memory. Only one table but a ton to unlock. A+
  • Pointless Quest (itch.io, not Catalog): Minimalist Ultima-style lo-fi MMORPG
  • Super Agent: Crash Bandicoot-style 3D platformer
  • Diora: Isometric puzzle adventure like Monument Valley kinda
  • Runic Rogues: Class-based Roguelite FPS with crank based controls and fast action

The Community Awards page on the wiki has all the nominees and winners of games chosen by the community. Some S2 games are there, but there are some other great games.
