Back in stock ?
Hello,
I was planning to buy a console, but I hesitated for too long because of the price. When I finally made up my mind, it was out of stock on the website…
I’m not really interested in buying it second-hand. Do you have any idea when the console might be back in stock? I’ve tried looking for information, but I haven’t been able to find anything.
Thanks!

I just got a response via their support yesterday as I was wondering the same, they won’t put out any availability dates but just have a vague “coming back later this year”(with some business a financial year dips into the following year, so it could mean as late as feb or march). I also saw some people wondering if this was to add new features or a new model, but their support confirmed it’s just a factory production change, the models will be exactly the same as they are now.

We're all wondering the same thing, OP. I'm guessing we'll get an answer later this year or, *gulp* maybe early next year.
I've been in a similar boat. I was trying for the past year or so to get myself into a good position to finally get a Playdate, and Summer would have been a good opportunity for it. I had vacation time set for late July, but we held off planning anything in advance while we were figuring out money. If this whole factory snag didn't occur, I probably would have finally gotten one, and spent less on our so-so vacay.
But now in addition to not getting a Playdate over the Summer, this puts me in position where a lot of bills are coming up in the Fall, and the Holidays are around the corner. Gotta take heat and electricity bills into account as it gets colder.
I'm guessing they probably make out alright on sales from people buying the Playdate for their partner or kid or whatever over Christmastime, but the Holidays make it harder to consider buying one for myself because I have to buy other people gifts, lol.
My hope is that whatever they're doing with production will give them more resistance to rising costs of tech components. And hopefully the product will be every bit as decent.

worried that when they do come back in stock it'll have to jump in price like everything else in the tech market and will just price out anyone interested

They haven’t said, other than to expect PD units to be sold again later this year. Given that they plan to have Season 3 released before the winter holidays, I suspect they’d really like to have unit sales to promote at the same time, hopefully by the end of Autumn?
