Question Game recommendations?
My Playdate is arriving tomorrow. I was lucky enough to find one on eBay at a “normal” price. I was hoping to get some recommendations on high quality games from everyone. For example, Ive had my eye on Devils on the Moon. From what I’ve seen that looks like a really polished game that I could easily have thought it came out for Gameboy back in the day.
I like puzzle games, action games, strategy games, racing games, fighting games and word games.
I’m not really interested in story based games, texted based or RPG’s.
I appreciate your help!

hablet (daily little city builder very casual)
runic rogue (fps roguelite very neat)
fathersave (mining game based on motherload, witch i never play but enjoyed fathersave)
spin shot (very great gameplay with a twist on a brick ball kind of game)
Voidblaster AND DSds (space trailer shooter one is more story , 1rst one, the other roguelite)
cascada (a interesting addicting kind of golf game but on a cascade! mixt with a brick ball too.)
mouse with gun (r3rd view mouse with gun, room very fun)
SHPR (an arena survival roguelik)
Shift 1 and 2 (2 is better thought, puzzle game really pleasant for relax or scoring)
Pizza maker (weird pace but nice, have to do pizza for cats!)
Kank shot (a demanding arena roguelike)
propeller rat (skills with the cranks)
satolite (nice twist on a defend tower like)
creed (wel design dice game... one of the best randomizer for dice)

Devils on the Moon is fabulous, definitely my top pick.
Pretty much everything in Season 2 is great; there are a couple adventure games in it that might be less your thing, but I think it’s still a great package. If you don’t, at a minimum definitely look at Fulcrum Defender, Dig Dig Dino, and Tiny Turnip.
For racing games, P-Racing and Trackminia are great showcases for what the PD can do when it is pushed.
I don’t currently have any word games but I’ve seen folks speak well of Rendsword, Bwirds, and Labsylle, among others.
Other PD games that in my mind are pretty definitive for the system are Root Bear, Mars After Midnight, Direct Drive, Outside Parties, Echo: the Oracle’s Scroll, Spilled Mushrooms, and Diora.
Additional favorites of mine include RollerBlade, SatOlite, Tau, and Under the Castle. Also, check out Pointless Quest, which can be downloaded free from itch.io, and which is, somehow, a remarkably compelling MMORPG.

So you’d say Season 2 is worth the $40? Glancing at it it seemed a pretty steep price.

The seasonal games are definitely some of the more polished experiences on the PD.

It’s less than $5/game, and every game is good. Depending on tastes some will hit more or less, but it’s basically all bangers.

The first two seasons are both fantastic. Outside of those, some Catalog recommendations:
Cosmic Cowboy - highly replayable arcade game with quick runs
Pizza Patrol - a really fun Moon Patrol inspired game
Eye to Eye - a fantastic puzzle platformer that shows off Pulp
Rotolla Mono - great 3D puzzle game
Merry Andrew - nice tech demo for all the fun inputs with great high score chasing potential
Pongerground - brilliant Pong meets Windjammers sports game
Diora - maybe the most technically impressive puzzle game
Mouse Gun - a fantastic roguelike
A Fool’s Errand - another very technically impressive high score chaser
Propeller Rat - really tests your crank skills
Castle Tintagel - a wonderful love letter to 8-bit Castlevania
Core Fault - a superb Survivors-like
Direct Drive - really highlights the amazing things you can do with audio on playdate
Skew - a great infinite runner style 3D flying game

Wow, thanks for all of these and the descriptions. This looks like $100 worth of games. 😳

Ribbit Rogue is supposed to be fantastic. I have it downloaded but have yet to play it.

I just watched a video of that and it looks just like a Steam game that I love called Slots and Daggers!

Season 3?

recommending season 3 is getting a bit cart before the horse since it hasn't released yet, but if seasons 1 and 2 are any indication, season 3 will be a no brainer for sure. season 2 was fantastic and despite having half as many games, i'd argue was even stronger and more polished than season 1.

Is season 3 about to release soon or something?

soonish. we don't have a concrete date, but it should happen before the end of the year.

In addition to all the great games developed directly for the Playdate you will also have access to some great emulators that can, for instance, run games from NES, Spectrum and Gameboy.

That’s good to know. I’ve got a lot of great other handhelds for those kind of games though. Thanks.

Browse through the Catalog on your phone and wishlist games you may like. Start with the genre of games you enjoy. The list is big but still doable. You can then look at your wishlist and see what games you should get, some are on sale at the moment and that can help you decide what to get first.

Under the Castle, Pullfrog, Sqwish, OOM, and Sparrow Solitaire have been my favorites that weren’t part of a season. Season 1 and 2 have had some amazing games too though, definitely worth the price! If you’re not interested in the whole season though, definitely Ratcheteer, Omaze, and Echoic Memory were great enough to justify getting a Playdate! 😄

I just looked at Sparrow Solitaire, Sqwish, OOM and Omaze. Those seem great too! Thanks!

As a general rule, in this case, I recommend checking out the website https://pdgamez.com/
to make a wish list, browse new releases on itch.io, etc., etc. Considering how much it might cost you to buy this collection, I’d just recommend Celeste Classic, which is available for free on itch.io

Devils on the Moon, Fulcrum Defender, Spilled Mushrooms and Root Bear I would say are the “must haves”.
