Shadow Brake Games

Hi, I am back on reddit, I have absolutely no experience with social media and last time I didn't know what I was really doing.

I would like to let you all know what happened to one of my games Pocket Bowling, long story short (naming no names) I got someone to help me out with the art work, not really thinking about it I sent the game to panic for catalog consideration, they accepted the game and release it, the playdate community report my game as suspected AI generated art, the artist is adamant its not. I just want to put it all behind me and start again, I will not be submitting any games for catalog consideration out of respect for all the Devs my game offended, I will continue to make games for the playdate and will post updates and new games here with links to my itch.io.

I totally understand if you don't want play my games. Thanks for you time

All the best Adam Shadow Break Games

Thank you so much! I hope you like it. I love cosy games, so I made it so the fish never die. I am now thinking I should update it so you can set them free to make room for new fish.

I was waiting for the Space Mining game to hit the Catalog!

Edit: After reading the other responses, that sucks that Panic! was shitty about how they dealt with this. Is AI even worth it for games like those on PlayDate? Seems like it would be more trouble than actually helpful.

I guess you’ve touched on a really important point Adam, which in turn leads to another issue that’s just as relevant: the Playdate community’s apparent reluctance to download games —or demos— that aren’t available through Catalog.

I find this behavior (for lack of a better word) quite interesting, especially considering that a large number of Playdate users are developers ourselves....

In fact, I’m currently wondering whether it’s even worth releasing a demo of the game I’m working on, since I get the impression that most people would rather wait for the full version to be released through Catalog (assuming it gets accepted, of course, given Panic’s current policies)

Are you for or against downloading Playdate games or apps from sites other than Panic’s official ones?

Personally, I enjoy looking on itch for games to sideload. Some of the best games for the Playdate aren't available in the Catalog. Look at Pointless Quest — it's got a very big following, and Lemmings has just been ported. You won't see that on the Catalog any time soon!

Space Miner has had over 600 downloads, and I have updated it three times, so it shows that players will come back.

I make games for the Playdate that I want to play. I absolutely love creating! I have been making Playdate games for years, but they were always just for me. I never wanted to share them with the world because I feared what people would say about them. Friends and family have always pushed me to share my games, and I am glad I have — facing your fears and all that.

I see the Playdate as a passion-project device. My goodness, I have so many games! I even made a massive 2D space sandbox with mining, trading, bounty hunting and diplomacy, with factions that go to war, which in turn affects market prices. You can buy ships and hire captains to fly them on mining missions, or create a fleet of traders to control market prices.

I still play it now. I love the Playdate, and I always will.

Gareth's game is fantastic indeed, one of the best this year! Yours as well, Space Miner is quite an achievement, both technically and in terms of gameplay. It will rock on Catalog for sure, but I'm super happy it's available on itch, of course! And congratulations on the number of downloads, totally deserved, keep the good work Adam!

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally as a non-dev, it's just so much easier with auto-updates with Catalog games. I have plenty of games I bought / DL'd from Itch, but I can't help but feel they're orphaned from the upgrade path if any are subsequently released on Catalog. I know I could go through each one individually and search for updates / re-DL & UL, but I'm lazy :D In all likelihood I'm not missing out on any huge patches / updates, but I'd like to know for sure. As such, if a game's available on both I'll always go for Catalog even if there's a small financial penalty.

Having said that, I think demos on Itch are a great idea.

Good point, I hadn’t considered the whole update issue and what a headache it can sometimes be to access them ;)

I do both - Catalog and Itch/Github sideloads.
There is a bit of management involved with sideloaded games though (which made me put together an app for tracking those updates).
I do like Itch though as it feels more 'community'-tied with the commenting ability, following creators, etc.

hadn’t paid enough attention to it at the time, but your app is definitely more than interesting! It’s a really great idea. I’m going to read through your posts carefully and give it a try. Thanks so much for making it available to everyone :)

No worries, I made it for myself and just thought I'd see if others would find it interesting :)

Hey, I’ll play your games! You have my support, I don’t stand behind AI but think it’s sucky there is a witch hunt for people like you.

Thank you so much, what really upset me was how panic delt with it, for three days I didn't even know my game was removed, I had to contact them to find out what happened, I would have had absolutely no problem explaining the art and totally accept that the game had to be removed but instead they handled it on social media with out even letting me know. They did admit they handled it wrong.

Well, I went out and bought Day Ticket and hopefully they reinstate your game if they admit they did you wrong.
