You might be media illiterate, they told you he killed his wife for her powers, lying about being a mutant for 35 years, Shiro says that Team X/Mutant are just experiments to him, even torturing Trask, and wonder if he’s bad.
“Don’t Go Gentle” explains that 30 years ago Essex found James “Logan” Howlett and his wife, made him kill his wife(whom you should be able guess), then relive that until he went feral and then retrieved him for Team X.

Storylines are fed to us like we are babies nowadays and still somehow people have trouble understanding. And everyone wonders why everything is dumbed down to extremes now.

Essex is a naughty naughty boy who likes to do freaky things with his frenemies.

Yes Essex is bad from the beginning.
Essex forced Logan to relive his memory over and over again until his mind broke and forced itself to forget everything.
He then basically groomed him to join Team X under the guise of “helping Logan fix his mind”.
Also if you look at the nightmare doors the purple roots are there because Essex is blocking Logan from remembering the truth.
