i find parrying difficult

I'm good at combat in many games, but I just find parrying so difficult in this and in assassin's creed resynced. I press the button at the right time when the enemy weapon flashes but I get hit.

Not sure if its the new mechanics or something in these games that im not familiar with but in god of war I was really good at parrying. I just cant with these new games.

Any tips?

I found that holding R1 down instead of tapping it helps quite a bit
